I think people should be careful doing Reiki

This post assumes a belief in spirituality so I'm not interested in debating that specifically. If you want to please start your own thread.

From what I can see, reiki is channeling occult energy through people's bodies and is therefore potentially risky. It seems to me that new age practitioners will repeatedly say they don't believe in malevolent entities but I think this is naive.

One of my friends told me that his dad was never the same after he became involved with reiki.

And also nearly everyone I've met who has done it was told by the reiki practitioner that they are 'special' have a 'gift' or could easily become a reiki master.

Talking about your “studies” just makes it abundantly clear you don’t know much about anything

How is that then? I was talking about other peoples studies anyway. You do know what a scientific study is

People can have surprising abilities and natural, apparently innate, understanding without formal study

To understand complicated science statistics? Noone has an innate understanding of those without formal studies. Most people don't have good understanding even with formal studies.

I know we're in an age now that everyone distrusts experts but think themselves to be one, but come on now. Lets not go for such nonsense shall we? Have some self respect at least, admit that y9ou are neither trained nor able to understand things that it takes many years of intense education to master.

bfgdreamtree · 13/01/2018 22:16

what is actually known about Reiki is that it does not appear to be harmful

I refer you back to lying to people about what you can help them with being utterly harmful.

bfgdreamtree · 13/01/2018 22:16

Oh sorry, I misquoted there entirely, apologies for that. Very tired, been at work all night.

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/01/2018 22:19

Tabby lied misrepresented a governmental organisation which employs scientists to investigate claims made wrt complementary therapies as a group of woo believers and not scientists, made out that a blog post from 2011 was a better source of information and embellished the conclusions of a scientific study.

Bert insists that acupuncture is woo despite knowing that there exists a meta analysis showing the opposite.

picklemepopcorn · 13/01/2018 22:33

Magpie, you have amazing stamina! I fear you are wasting your energy though, as the people you are talking to don't want to listen. It's like colour blindness. Only with insults! Grin

magpiemischief · 13/01/2018 22:40

Yes, not a huge amount of engagement going on, really is there, pickle? I thought the insults had tailed off and then another poster started with complaints based on things I'd not posted....

Hi Op I didn't seek it out as such. I had been having trouble with my hip for months and couldn't lift my leg to put me drawers on so had to sort of dangle me pants and try and hook them over my extended foot on that side. I went for a coffee round at SILs and she did some reiki on me because I was getting anxiety attacks. The following day I went to put me knickers on and was able to lift my leg as normal. It was then that I realised it had had a dramatic effect on my hip when I hadn't mentioned the hip to SIL. Three days later and the pain was gone completely. It may be coincidence but I had had pain in it for months and it went away in a few days after reiki and stayed away more to the point. During the session I had some dramatic popping in the joints of my neck too. Really starting. Like I had space dust in there. All very odd. I am pretty sceptical but I consider it helped me a lot.

Personally I use allopathy as a last option because there are so many Iatrogenic illnesses

Big words don't make that any more sensible you know?

Which of the big words do you not understand metacrisis? You know it is quite easy to google words now.

Vitalogy · 14/01/2018 05:29

He didn't mean Reiki I guessed that as he died a long time ago but as you mentioned his name. Grin

BertrandRussell · 14/01/2018 08:38

“Bert insists that acupuncture is woo despite knowing that there exists a meta analysis showing the opposite.”

The meta analysis you refer to shows a statistically insignificant “benefit” which is consistent with the placebo effect.

Accupuncture:
It is used in many NHS general practices, as well as the majority of pain clinics and hospices in the UK.

Why would the NHS waste their money like this?

speakout · 14/01/2018 08:42

*How acupuncture works
Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body.

This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins. It's likely that these naturally released substances are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture.

A course of acupuncture usually creates longer lasting pain relief than when a single treatment is used*

BertrandRussell · 14/01/2018 08:50

“Why would the NHS waste their money like this?”

Because a) the placebo effect is powerful and it can ease the pressure on doctors but anyway b) that’s changing

speakout · 14/01/2018 08:58

I am aware that the NHS sometimes uses placebos, but I doubt that they would be making such claims on their web site.

" Fairy pills make you feel good, they take away your worries and pain!"

But Bert knows best eh.

FarFrom · 14/01/2018 09:07

it's shocking that nhs money has been spent on homeopathy. Rather than funding proper treatments and time so that real clinicians can also give enough space for patients to feel listened to and looked after (the benefit of homeopathic practitioners)

BertrandRussell · 14/01/2018 09:14

[shrugs]

All I do is present evidence. Up to you what you do with it. But what with you being a scientist you’ll know what to do with evidence.

DioneTheDiabolist · 14/01/2018 10:41

But you haven't preseneed evidence. You just keep repeating the same thing.

picklemepopcorn · 14/01/2018 11:13

Don't be silly Dionne dear, It's been proved that reiki isn't true. So stop talking about it!

Erm, some of us want to talk about it.

Don't be silly dear, It's been proved that reiki isn't true. So stop talking about it!

Some of us have seen people get better when they do it.

Don't be silly dear, It's been proved that reiki isn't true. So stop talking about it!

Some of us have had unpleasant experiences with it.

Don't be silly dear, It's been proved that reiki isn't true. So stop talking about it!

Only substitute 'you credulous idiot' and many other insults for the 'dear'.

VileyRose · 14/01/2018 11:36

I don't even know what to say. I read this thread in disbelief. How people are so dismissive and horrible.

bfgdreamtree · 14/01/2018 11:40

I too read it in disbelief, that people are so gullible, foolish, arrogant and wilfully obtuse.

Who needs science and logic huh? It's a new Trumpian age of post truth, alt-facts and everyone being an expert, except actual experts. It's a sad indictment of the human race, a new age of endarkenment.

But we'll have reiki and crysta healing and homeopathy to cure us all, so it's al goo. Hmm

bfgdreamtree · 14/01/2018 11:41

all good. Even my fucking phone has the IQ of a turnip and yet still cleverer than those who beleive in reiki

magpiemischief · 14/01/2018 11:55

Last post directed at bfg. Interesting books for anyone, though. I'd recommend both.

Vitalogy · 14/01/2018 11:59

You know what the naysayers would benefit from, to spend some time with the indigenous people of the world.

picklemepopcorn · 14/01/2018 12:14

That film with the big blue people! Wonderful.

Those kinds of studies are so interesting, Magpie. And people who suggested such things would be considered deluded- until the point where science worked out what to look for and how to look, and discovered it was there all along.
