Witchcraft- have you tried? Would you try?

Have you had any experience of this craft? Would you try? I understand that some think it's all rubbish, or may have fear but I am curious to other's views.

I'm for ever grubbing out elder plants - one planted itself 10 years ago and is prolific in its offspring!

It is interesting that science is now catching up with the craft. There are some interesting studies where scientists have managed to transmit energy across considerable distances and the young science of quantum mechanics is starting to offer some possible explanations as to how the craft works.

It looks like Arthur C Clarke wasn't far wrong "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

magpiemischief · 07/12/2017 19:25

No Elder community in your garden then, Elphame? Or do you leave more than one? They must want to grow their family where you are (reproductive behaviour varies according to what I've read). Our visiting birds also love ours. Lovely berries! I'd have a forest, I think, if we had enough land!

Yes, I find quantum mechanics very interesting. There is some common ground within how the craft works and what is believed about the spiritual domain within Christianity. The main difference as I see it, is the beliefs concerning the need for divine governance!

Which seems to be where you and I differ. Take care.x

magpiemischief · 07/12/2017 20:21

*@Elphame, are you watching the BBC 4 documentary on BBC4 right now on Quantum Physics?

GrumpyOldMare · 07/12/2017 20:59

Practising Solitary Witch here.
I follow a ''Green Path'' based in Nature. My deities are Pan,and the Green Man.
I rarely cast spells,myself.
Personally, for me,this path works. It's not for everyone, just as the mainstream religions/faiths are for everyone.

Elphame · 07/12/2017 22:37

Sorry been out for a drink with some friends!

magpie - I've allowed the Elder community in the back garden to grow to 3. There are probably a couple more in the hedge that I haven't spotted but they'll do no harm there. They can fight with the brambles.

I suspect we may have a lot more in common than we realise - text is not a great means of communication for this sort of thing. I enjoy a good debate down the pub!

No - I didn't see the quantum physics programme - don't actually have a TV and of course can't watch on catch up either now with no licence. Sad

magpiemischief · 07/12/2017 22:56

Oh well, nothing you couldn't read about, Elphame.

Hope you enjoyed your night out.

I think a lot of spiritual beliefs and practices will have things in common somewhere. Due to me thinking there is something very real about them!

I am pleased that you have been showing you don't dismiss my concerns completely out of hand. You just know something, that I don't, about the precautions you can take and the exact nature of your own practice, of course. Which I don't because I've not really had the opportunity to discuss the details of the craft with someone who possesses the experiences you have. Not that I'm still not concerned over being able to practice safety but recognising dangers and seeking to minimise them certainly is a step in the right direction IMO. Of course I personally think seeking the guidance of God is the ultimate way of accessing/experiencing supernatural power (and much more) but then I would as I am a Christian.

Pleased your Elders won't be lonely.

I’ve changed my name because this question is very outing; but for ages I’ve been interested in paganism, when I was younger I was into witches and so is my child now.
Anyway, I am on the Isle of Man and I would love to meet a coven here, Ihave never found anything. I emailed an individual I found by google but I never got a response.
So yeah, if you know of any coven or person into wicca o paganism I’d love to hear it!
Also feel free to discuss anything related in this thread, I always felt very spiritual but never have done anything about it.
Thanks!

Brujita · 16/12/2017 15:30

Oh dear, I thought I was opening a new thread! Please ignore my post and I’ll try again...

@discotits I'm wondering whether I may have met you during your stay in Scotland!

I'm a Gardnerian Wiccan of around 20 years now, and you do have to know what you're doing and be willing to pay a price if necessary. Like Doreen Valiente, I don't believe in the Law of Threefold Return; she thought that Gerald Gardner had made it up to appear less threatening to the society of the time while I'm more of a mind that what goes around comes around, or sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.

People can do harm by dabbling, just as people can do harm by playing with ouija boards. One thing that the traditional coven structure does is a solid training, even if you then choose to be solitary. An easy way to cover your arse is to add something like "an it harm none" or "for the good of all". Personally, I wouldn't touch spells until you have a good grasp of psychic self-defence and grounding. We still don't understand all the powers of the mind and what else is out there in the universe and planes of existence.

There is an exhilaration when you feel in touch with the power of this world and feel the gods speaking through you in ritual but your first care is to yourself and to strengthen and protect yourself. I personally have a difficult time coming back from trance so I will not let myself do that alone.

Yes, you can learn yourself, but it is a long haul, and dabblers have been hurt - you wouldn't start rewiring a house if you only had instructions for rewiring a plug.

speakout · 26/12/2017 10:59

paws- absolutely we need to protect ourselves.

I was taught witchcraft as a child by my grandmother who was born in 1892.

I don't hold by many of the "rules".

We have to accept the consequences of our actions, but that holds true in everyday life too. Our words, our actions all have an effect.

Even apparently "positive " magic can cause someone to have a negative consequence.
Imagine a work of magic to secure a job and enhance and interview.
Then you are offered a job- that in turn causes someone else to be rejected for that job.

It's for this reason I don't hold with the idea of white/black magic. All intents and actions are grey. The good bad dualism is an Abrahamic construct anyway.

I read some books on witchcraft in the late 90s/early 00s.

I had been a Christian but walked away.

I feel that if I were ever to become religious again it would be along the pagan/Wiccan lines.

I do not believe that science has the answer to everything. I think that has become the new mainstream religion and society is scathing towards its critics.

Thankfully I have friends on the same page as me!

Solly76 · 22/01/2018 07:32

I'm a long time practicing traditional pagan witch. Mainly work with herbs and candles, observing the cycles of the moon.

I'm not really a big spellcaster as most things require a practical rather than magical solution.

ClaryFray · 17/03/2018 19:31

Late to the party as always but, just in case there is another curious person I thought I'd chip in.

Start your year and a day. It's not a requirement but it helps give yourself a year and a day to look, listen and read. Learn all you can. The works has some very good books, reasonably priced too. Then decide.

I have been a Wiccan since I was a teenager, and it's served me well.

VileyRose · 19/03/2018 14:38

:-)

I think it makes sense to live in a cyclic way really.

cockupparent · 19/03/2018 15:03

I don't practise it but I wish I could.

I would cast myself a spell to fall pregnant easily with a healthy baby

And another to make the ex I still pine after fall madly in love with me and want me back Grin

PutTheChocEggDown · 30/03/2018 13:40

Witchcraft is of interest to me. I think it's a path that some people choose to walk and it appeals especially to people who are free thinkers and / or spiritual people who have been burned by mainstream religion.

I know a few Wiccans who set great store by the rede and the rule of three; I know non-Wiccans who set great store by 'know thyself' instead. They are willing to do harm if they feel that they need to but through experience they won't cast in anger for the reasons in the story upthread.

They are all good people and are much more reflective than most people I've met, especially the experienced non-Wiccans. They are especially self-reflective because they really believe they can fuck people up (themselves included) if they're not careful and they will do a long, hard appraisal of whether a casting is warranted.

I'm interested in herbal medicines and the cunning craft that is making a comeback. I talk to my plants, cleanse my house spiritually as well as physically and am generally more 'sensitive' to energy than I was in the past (this is a double-edged sword). I feel very connected to the energy in nature and this is nothing but good - we would all benefit from spending more time in nature.

You would never in a million years see me and think of me as a witch Grin
