i am so going to be making those - will dip in cinnamon i think - Yum! Great that they are calorie free!

SSShakeTheChi · 24/04/2007 08:20

Would you lot cut this out please?! I'm supposed to be on a diet and this thread keeps cropping up with dumplings repeatedly dipped in sugar etc....

Oh yum I AM tempted

Taylormama · 24/04/2007 08:23

did you not see Jomist's post - they are calorie free!!!

lulumama · 24/04/2007 11:56

PMSL at sin free calorie free deep fried dumplings in sugar!!

jomist · 24/04/2007 16:09

Look at it this way...eating if you're Jewish can never be a sin - it's always a mitzvah (eat bubula), therefore sin free whatever the amount of calories. If you're not Jewish and you eat our wonderful 'sin free' foods then by definition you are Jewish and then the calories don't count! Win win situation I say

JonahB · 25/04/2007 22:09

Jomist, I love your sin-free fried recipes!! I am, however, very curious about this honey cake. That?s definitely appealing to my heavily pregnant stomach. Which Evelyn Rose book should I be looking in? I was always a reader of Claudia Roden, however, my family members always seem to be making delicious ER recipes and it really is high time I made the investment. All for the sake of the baby, you understand??.

jomist · 25/04/2007 22:19

It is a little known fact that not only do heavily pregnant ladies benefit from honey cake, but their babies will get A* results and graduate to Oxford. Therefore I recommend The New Complete International Jewish Cookbook by Evelyn Rose for honey cake. Also this honey cake is calorie free as it has to sit in foil for days before being ready to eat, thus the calories all soak into the foil rendering it sin free.

JonahB · 26/04/2007 16:54

Jomist, I love your way of thinking . I can see a little trip onto Amazon coming up?.
One of my favourite cakes of all time is an ER recipe my aunt gave me, which involves oranges, ground almonds, foil and overnight resting. Really moist and freezes beautifully. A week before I had DS1, I made a couple of them, then whisked them out of the freezer at the appropriate time post-birth before guests arrived. People thought I was supermum ? little did they know?.

lulumama · 26/04/2007 16:57

so funny.....! i love honey cake , mum always makes it at rosh hashana...

Taylormama · 26/04/2007 16:59

Recipe for sin free, 'ology guaranteeing honey cake (Evelyn, we love you):

6oz (175g) plain flour
3oz (75g) caster sugar
1/2 teasp ground ginger
1/2 teasp ground cinnamon (I leave this out - yuk cinnamon)
1 level teasp mixed spice
8oz (225g) clear honey
4 tbsp sunflower oil
2 eggs
1 level teasp bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 3fl oz (125ml) orange juice and grated rind of the orange
2oz chopped walnuts

Mix together the flour, sugar and spices. Make a well in the centre, then add the honey, oil, rind and eggs. Beat well together until smooth. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the orange juice and add the nuts. Stir into the flour mixture. Pour into a greaseproof paper-lined tin approx 10 x 8 x 2 inches.

Bake at gas 4, 350F, 180C for 50-55 minutes or until firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. When quite cold, foil-wrap and leave at room temperature for 4-5 days before using. Improves with keeping.

Keeps 2 weeks at room temperature in airtight container. Freeze 3 months.

JonahB lets have the orange recipe!

JonahB · 26/04/2007 19:27

Almond & Orange Blossom Cake
225g soft unsalted butter
50g plain flour, pref. Italian 00
zest 2 oranges
225g caster sugar
180g ground almonds
2 tbspns orange juice
4 eggs
1 small tspn almond essence
2 tbspns orange-flower water

grease a 21cm spring release cake tin. Line the bottom with greaseproof paper. Preheat oven to GM4. Cream together the butter and sugar until almost white. Beat the eggs and add them gradually to the butter and sugar, beating all the time. Add flour. Gently stir in the ground almonds, then the almond essence, grated orange zest, orange juice and orange flower water.
(at this point, my recipe doesn?t bother to mention how long to cook it for. Go for a safe 25 minutes and give it a poke).
Once cooked, take out of oven and leave to cool. Wrap the cake in foil for a day or so before being eaten.
It is gorgeous served with fruit. Alternatively, do what I do and suddenly develop and overwhelming desire to drink tea all day, and ?ooh, maybe I?ll have a small slice of cake with it??.

Really hope you like this as much as I do.

JonahB · 26/04/2007 19:32
