I have just signed up to do TM the cost is staggering but hopefully will be worth it. Tell me I've done the right thing

they should teach it at schools - what a difference that would make

shrub · 24/07/2004 19:54

you are so right katierocket! i remember reading an article about such a school - it might be called the maharishi school, i think its in skelmersdale. don't know if its privately run but remember reading how the children/parents/teachers noticed a real difference in temperament of the childen and their ability to concentrate. there was a recent item in the news about massage being used in schools in denmark (?) the children had all been massaged from when they were babies until they went to school at 6/7 they began to ask4massage was. there is a school somewhere in the uk currently doing this on a trial again with similar results to tm.

For the first time today managed to do the second meditation in the afternoon rather than just before going to sleep. It did give me a burst of energy to finish off my jobs but I was completely exhausted by about 8.30 so will be going to bed soon. Also - I don't know if the two things rae related but I have managed to "let go" of a situation that has been getting me down and consuming me since January - to the extent that I just don't care about it anymore - don't know if this is the TM or just the passage of tome - but I am very pleased to be in this position.

Wonder if anybody can help - one thing that the TM teacher has been saying to me is that if you come out too quickly you can get a headache or experience irritability. Both meditations today had to be cut short by a couple of minutes and hence had to "come out" quickly (30 seconds instead of the usual 2 to 3 minutes) Also find that I have been yelling at DD alot today (have hardly shouted at her all since I started TM)- she has been a bit naughtier than usual but not enough to warrant my yelling. Has anybody else experienced this sort of irritability when coming out too soon (am going to set the alarm earlier for tomorrow soo can do first meditation without any danger of her getting up)

Bump - sorry feeling a bit desperate

Hi Neetsmassi

I don't really have any experience of what you mention, but it seems as if you could be right. My mother is a very frequent meditator and has mentioned that it is a bit jarring to come out too quickly.

It was really nice to discover this thread as I was taught TM by my step father when I was just around 10 years old or so and both he and my mother still meditate some 25 odd years later! It has made me think that I should start meditating again as it would probably improve my temperment when I'm with DS!

Wish I could help a bit more - sorry!

katierocket · 03/08/2004 14:27

Yes neetmassi, if you come out suddently it definitely causes irritability. My TM teacher made a really big deal of this and kept reiterating how important it is to have 2-3 mins where you just sit (after finishing the mantra).

neetsmassi · 04/08/2004 14:28

Thanks KR ans NS. I will definitely make the time to come out more slowly - have been less crabby since I have been doing this. It means getting up earlier but never mind.

NS - I am interested that you were taught TM so young - do you feel it benefitted you learning this so early?

Need a bit of a lift - finding it hard to make the time to do 2 meditations a day - should be easier once term starts - more time to do second one before DD comes home - also finding it hard to actually do the dmeditation IYSWIM - find my mind drifting off and lots of other thoughts coming in - anybody else have this?

Sorry to be a bore but I don't know any other TMers

Hi neetsmassi

Sorry I didn't respond to your other post - just saw it now!

I know what you mean about finding it difficult to get two full meditations in one day. Don't get too stressed if you miss out on a session, just try to fit them in the next time. I find I am quite often drifting away and I have to remind myself that I should be saying my mantra. My dad used to say that the thought bubbles were the stresses coming out and to just acknowledge them and let them float away. Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if learning so young has been such a benefit - well I think it would have, but I have never been very good at keeping up with it and I think it was harder when I was younger to keep my concentration on one thing for so long!

neetsmassi · 24/08/2004 10:48

Thanks NettiSulvetti

It's nice to know that this happens to other people as well and that it's not just me doing it wrong.

Take Care

Hi, just noticed this thread - I have been doing TM since I was 15 (am now 37) and in fact I don't do it that regularly, just when I feel I need it, and it still works (I know it's a good one when I get the feeling that water is rushing out of my feet LOL). Don't worry at all about missing sessions. I don't get the headache thing though.

neetsmassi · 05/10/2004 14:35

Hi all

Have not done meditation for weeks now (been on holiday, busy - all excuses I know). Am going to make a conscious effort to restart as it really does make me feel better. CD - Glad to see that it doesn't matter if you miss sessions.

hi neetmassi, is easy to fall out of the routine (I did two and really noticed the difference) but have recently re-started and feeling good about it.

neetsmassi · 05/10/2004 14:40

That's good KR - maybe we need a meditation support network - only joking!!

Ooh - TM thread. I did a course about 15 years ago but haven't meditated for years - funnily enough I was thinking about it today as I'm getting sooo tired right now(16wks pg) and not always practical to have a daytime nap. This has inspired me! Btw neetmassi - I've done it on and off for years and you don't forget

neetsmassi · 06/10/2004 23:33

That's reassuring bonym (that you don't forget). Hope it helps with the tiredness. Good luck with the pregnancy! Is it your first?

OP posts:
bonym · 07/10/2004 18:40

No, 2nd - my dd is 6 so I'm putting the increased tiredness down to old-age! (Well, older-age anyway). Despite my best intentions to do a TM session yesterday, I actually found I had time for a sleep instead so opted for that!

neetsmassi · 19/10/2004 19:09

I still haven't got back in to the routine. Did a couple last week but must do better as I always feel loads better for doing it.

hi neetsmassi..i have been doing TM for 20 years (I also teach at the Maharishi school)and I have gone through the same stuff as you. Just a few tips:...if you find it hard to get back into doing it, see if you can have your meditation checked by your teacher. I do not imply that you are doing it wrong, just that doing it in that context will give you that experience of how easy it is again, and you might find it easier to get back into things again.

About thoughts...after 20 years most my meditations are full of thoughts....talk to your teacher about this too, but as far as I know it doesn't matter. TM is not about mind control after all.

I have also seen at school that the kids (and teachers lol) who miss meditations during holidays get a bit more tired in the first week or so of doing it more regularly. I think our bodies grab for rest whenever we offer it. Remember what it was like when the kids started sleeping through the night? I was a wreck after coping for years with very little sleep.

dalek · 05/12/2007 18:45

Hi Fairyflytoo - just seen this - I am a lapsed TMer but my problem is that my teacher seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth (he's probably just moved away). Do you think it would be ok to contact the local representative and see if I could I have my meditation checked - or would that be too cheeky.

Must start to do it agin as I lways felt fantastic afterwards.

Take care
