I'm currently planning school RE and we are looking at important religious events across all religions that mark stages of life. So for Christianity I have Christenings/confirmations and for Judaism I have Bar and Bat Mitzvah but I don't know enough about Islam, Sikhism,Hinduism etc to know the key ceromonies or events. For example at what age can children start fasting for Ramadam or attend prayers with adults in the Mosque? Any help about any religions would be much appreciated.

What's your role at the school Confused ?

antumbra · 02/04/2015 17:42

A bit disturbing if you have to teach this subject and seem so ill qualified to do so. Hmm

mullingitovermuch · 02/04/2015 17:46

Really? I was looking for some ideas not your contempt.

So, what's your role at the school? It's a pretty crucial bit of information in order to be able to advise you where to look.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 02/04/2015 17:52

If mumsnet is your first port of call when planning RE then I hope you don't work at my children's school! Hmm

Just in case: there are better, more credible, factual sources for this. Like this BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/schools/religion/

Im an nqt trying to get ahead of myself whilst on holiday. Thought I'd have a go myself before I speak to my RE Coordinator or my Head of Year.

Contempt?

Concern perhaps- contempt is a bit strong.

I am simply surprised that you feel qualified in this area enough to be teaching children. Are you a teacher?

If you are I am surprised you are looking for information on a chat website like Mumsnet. Perhaps you should be doing some ongoing study yourself to furnish yourself with some decent knowledge.
What if children start asking you questions when your own knowledge base is so shallow?

I would suggest you stay away from the whole subject until you can become better educated on the area.

I speak simply as a concerned parent. I would be aghast if I thought my kids' teacher was trying to prepare a lesson from a few scant and perhaps inaccurate tips on a chat site.

Children start fasting at Ramadan around 11-12 years old but will do so for a day here and there; not for the whole month. Boys will be taken to the mosque from about the same age on Fridays. I've taught RS for about 17 years :-)

FennyBridges · 02/04/2015 17:58

And I'm fully qualified, lol.

I'm a HOD for RE, happy for you to PM me but it will depend on your locally agreed syllabus, what school (faith, academy, free etc) you work in and which exam board you will be using.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 02/04/2015 18:00

Have you tried the TES website? Tbh, I'd familiarise myself with the basics over the holidays and see what the RE Lead Teacher has when you go back.

mullingitovermuch · 02/04/2015 18:01

Thank you Fenny Bridges. Exactly what I was looking for. Now I can go away and research and learn more about it and hopefully turn it into a really thoughtful lesson.

Yeah, because religious people are renowned for being non-judgemental Hmm

I'm guessing that RE is out of your subject specialism, but something you have to teach as a second subject? I think it sounds as though you need two things. One, confidence through improved subject knowledge (so, books and websites about religion in general) and pedagogical support. For the latter I think you need to talk to the subject coordinator.

FennyBridges · 02/04/2015 18:41

Don't be too cross everyone. With budget cuts and academies RE is severely affected and more and more other teachers are being deployed to teach it. On the one hand it isn't rocket science, on the other hand RE might lose its rigour. Who knows. I am paid as a UPS teacher but basically do HOD job (and have done in 3 previous schools). I am serious value for money and I LOVE RE. It's the best subject when taught well. So good luck OP. Fun and creativity in store for you Smile

cdtaylornats · 03/04/2015 12:47

I hope you're going to include the flying spaghetti monster.

AnxiousKeziah · 07/04/2015 19:58

There is a great resource called RE Today - do primary and secondary magazines and resources. Does your school subscriber- if so ask to see it!
Why not ask your school to send you on a one day course for staff - any run by Lat Blaycock would inspire you and equip you amazingly!!
