I recognise the quote from a (very good) lecture by Imam Zaid Shakir, it's very relevant to a lot of the conversations we have here.

Meanwhile, the way Southall Black Sisters was recently mentioned as a way of putting us in our place, made me think of this brilliant article:

When Muslim women want to save Muslim women

very interesting stuff gosh and crescent.

it is sad though isn't it, that as muslim women, we seem to be the most focussed on group in the whole world at the moment.

I know in my area I feel as though I represent all muslim women and I find it exhausting trying to dispel peoples' misconceptions with my actions.

defuse · 03/04/2014 00:45

Salaam all. Great posts crescent and gosh. I agree with pretty much all your points. Not able to add to the discussion right now....just finished DD's easter bonnet for parade and then decorate an egg! I dont have an artistic bone in my body and I know its supposed to be fun, but i just find it one more chore for me to do. How have i even managed to get myself involved in all this - its so not my thing!

Then along will come some fancy dress day where i will have to get imaginative again - iam not impressed!

So after all that grumbling, i will go to sleep. Will join the discussion as soon as i can inshallah. Love you all.

Salaam sisters

A new chapter is my life has started this week, please make dua for me and my dc and keep us in your thoughts.

Crescent I've been to Hawaii and loved it misses the point and I found those articles interesting.

UmmSHI this 'I know in my area I feel as though I represent all muslim women and I find it exhausting trying to dispel peoples' misconceptions with my actions' is how I feel too. Even though there's a large population of Muslims in my town I feel like I'm always trying to fly the flag for reverts and I'm always being 'extra' nice. I always smile and say hello/morning etc, I would do that anyway even without wearing hijab, but I don't want people thinking I'm rude, therefore thinking all hijabi's are rude!

Defuse I Grin at your easter bonnet parade. I have only ever heard of such things on mn and I'm so thankful my dc's school never do anything like that. I too hate craft stuff and I regift anything the dc get that involves anything craft like!

I can't believe Ramadan is nearing again, I'm really looking forward to it this year. My imaan is the highest it has been in a long time thanks to some lovely sisters, may Allah swt reward them.

Well done on your new chapter, alhamdullilah. It must of been really hard for you do.

My new chapter has been decided on but hasn't been put into motion yet, but it will inshallah. And I feel like a man size weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

That looks really good, I'd love to go somewhere like that. And what a great way to spend eid.

UmmSHI · 05/04/2014 20:57

Sisters lost and crescent, all the best for your new beginnings, sometimes change is really positive even though it can be difficult to adapt. I'm relieved you both identify with my previous post, i thought it was just me that felt that way.

I really hope you have a nice time at that camp crescent.

I am also really looking forward to ramadhan now and feel as though my iman is really building at the moment. InshaAllah I'm hoping to take advantage of the warm weather to try out new lighter recipes for iftar, I'm thinking salads and cold rice and pasta dishes, with loads of fresh fruit thrown in.

I must admit that I find it a bit disappointing in this country when fasting in summer with the late nights, because the children are sleeping by iftar and don't get to join the festivities of breaking fast together, I think it's a shame but qadr Allah.

LostHasBeenFound · 06/04/2014 07:32

That's a great idea ummSHI, I really struggle with what to cook, I always end up doing something really heavy. Maybe we can all do a recipe swap to give each other some ideas.

And yes, I think it would be nice for the children to experience iftar as well, I'm hoping I can keep my eldest up this year at the weekend and then when the summer holidays start.

I was sent this the other day and wanted to share it because I'd never heard of it before, well I knew to do wudhu before bed but didn't know why and I didn't know what the punishments were.

?? ?????? ????? ?????? ????????? ??????? ?????

May Allah clear all your worries

Did u know if u do wudhu before going to bed, your soul goes to Allah SWT and does sajda. Allah SWT then appoints an angel to stand next to your bed and everytime you move he makes dua for your forgivness. So do wudhu before bedtime and pass on the message. Only takes 2mins to do!!

????????? ???????

Read it and tell me that do you think the punishment part is right, we all know that not offering our prayers (salat) is HARAM! But little do we know the punishments that we will face...

Why do we erase messages that talk about religious (Islam) matters!

But We resend ordinary messages?

The Prophet peace be upon him narrated.
"Convey from me, even if its one verse (Ayah)"
May be by forwarding this message to others can be beneficial for your Intercession on the Day of Judgement.

The punishments of the one who doesn't pray.

The Prophet peace be upon him narrated: "Whoever shows heedlessness (negligence) in praying salat, Allah punishes them with fifteen kinds of punishments"

Six punishments in this life time.
Three punishments while dying.
Three punishments in the grave.
Three punishments on the day of Judgment.

Six punishments in this lifetime:
1 - Allah takes away blessings from his age,(makes his life misfortunate)
2 - Allah wipes out the virtues of righteous people from his face.
3 - Allah does not accept his Dua's.
4- He will be detested by all creatures on Earth.
5 - Allah does not award him for his good deeds.
6 - He will not be included in the prayer & Dua's of the righteous.
(good people)

Three punishments while dying.
1- He dies humiliated.
2-He dies hungry.
3- He dies thirsty.
Even if he drinks the water of all the seas, he will still be thirsty.

Three punishments in the grave.
1- Allah tightens his grave until his chest, ribs come over each other.
2- Allah pours on him fire with embers (red colour, hot coal made of immensely heated firewood).
3- Allah sets on him a snake called "The Brave" "The Bold" which rolls all around his body & crushes him.

Three punishments on the day of Judgment.
1- He will be dragged face down over hot burning coal to the hellfire.
2- Allah gives him an angry look that makes the flesh of his face fall down
3- Allah judges him strictly and orders him to be thrown in hell.

Those who do not offer their prayers of:

FAJR:
The glow of their face is taken away.

DHUHR:
The blessing of their incomes is taken away (even if he has millions, he will be poor).

ASR:
There is no strength in their body.

Magribh:

They are not benefitted by their children.

ISHA:
The peace of their sleep is taken away.

The person who listens to music during the Adhan will be unable to recite the Shahadah while dying.

Salaam all.

Inshallah hope everyone is doing well. crescent i just remembered another one that i was brought up with - if you dont cover your mouth when you yawn ( not disputing this as it is good islamic etiquette backed by hadith to cover your mouth when yawning) then shaytan pees on your head! Grin

I was brought up with so many of these myths -( thankfully, didnt believe many of them )- that now i double check for the proof behind them.

Sis lost , thank you for reminding me of the importance of prayer - i am not very good at my fajr Blush i do take the view that one who does not pray is in great danger of losing his iman and indeed scholars advise the muslim man and woman, to not share the bed with their spouse until the spouse gets the message and starts to pray again - I also am a bit wary of the lists of punishments as unless they are backed by hadith, it makes me wonder about their authenticity.

I like the idea of recipe exchange - although have no recipes up my sleeve!

Just noticed a fair few threads about circumcision, niqab etc. Dare i go check them out!

I have a question. If someone has 3 caesareans - 2 emergency (1 of which involved blood transfusion as a precautionary measure) and 1 elective due to the previous 2 emergency ones - are they islamically allowed to have a sterilisation procedure (tubal ligation) if having another baby would impact on their health? I dont mean life and death situation ( though a 4th Caesarean would carry more risks than the 3rd), but general health issues, bowel issues, minor recurrent surgeries required, impact on raising family and knowing that body just cannot cope with carrying a 4th child. Basically 5 surgeries in 5 years (inclusive of the 3 caesareans)

I didn't check out the authenticity of the punishments, I'd never heard of it before, and I too have read a lot of books on salah. I'm one of these people that takes everything at face value, if I'm told or shown something by someone I think of as being more knowledgable than me on the whole, I trust and believe what they're telling me is genuine. It's only later on, sometimes months after, I read something for myself and realise it's made up or there's no authenticity to what I've been told. I live and learn.

Defuse I can get up for fajr mon-fri no problem, come the weekend and I struggle too. I'm not going near those threads, I don't think I'll have anything constructive to say. My h was also told the devil pees in his mouth if he yawns without covering his mouth, again something he said to me too and I believed Blush Grin.

I've been thinking of long term birth control recently too even though I won't be needing it now and sterilisation was something I wanted to look into so I'll be interested to see whether it's possible. My mil has been sterilised but it's not something I'd feel comfortable asking her about.

Jazakallah crescent.

I should probably say that I sound like I'm contradicting myself when I say I never question anything and take it at face value. That is what lead me to ask about the khatam and taweez a while ago. I was told so I believed, I read then I questioned.

I've had a full day of diy and my hands are blistered. Hope everyone enjoys the holidays.

UmmSHI · 07/04/2014 19:18

InshaAllah the recipe idea sounds good, although I'm not great at cooking.

I also question everything I hear about islam that doesn't sound islamic. Like the quran teacher who said that i was not allowed to touch the words of the quran to follow along while reciting with my left hand. I asked for proof but it was not forthcoming. I am left handed so naturally gravitate towards using it for all tasks except that which has been explicitly mentioned i.e. eating. Please tell me that the teacher in question was wrong.

I especially question things if they come from the perspective of someone who I know to be very cultural in their outlook.

LostHasBeenFound · 07/04/2014 21:53

I've heard that before ummSHI that you shouldn't read Quran with your left hand. Not sure if there's a source though... anyone?

Here's one for you all.... I was told that passing wind farting doesn't break your wudhu. By a very respected sister who teaches at the mosque. That's one thing I did question and won't be following as I've read the Hadith that say it does break your wudhu. Although wouldn't it be easier if this was the case Grin. Someone's going to come along now and prove me wrong aren't they? She does tend to test us on the sly though so maybe that's what she was doing.

Is anyone else completely shocked by peaches geldof passing away? I can't get it off my mind. I followed her on Instagram and her boys are stunning. I just can't imagine two children so young growing up without their mum Sad. RIP peaches.

Jazakallah khair crescent for the detailed answer to my question.

ummshi i found this so i c&p'd it for you to look at from islamweb.net
I am not sure about who is right and wrong on this matter wrt following text with finger. However, from this text i would say that ut is preferable to use your right hand index finger to follow text - though there is nothing explicitly stated against using left hand. Let me know what you think:

It is more appropriate to hold the Qur'an with the right hand as a sign of honour to it. The Sunnah of the Prophet illustrated that it is desirable to use the right hand in everything that we wish to honour.
'Aa'ishah said: "That the Prophet used to prefer to start with the right hand or right side (over the left) when putting on his shoes, combing his hair, putting on perfume, and in all his matters." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
'Aa'ishah also said: "The Prophet used his right hand in applying perfume, in eating, and used his left hand in the toilet or when removing any harm." [Abu Daawood]
So the above narrations illustrate that it is preferable to use the right hand when honouring anything, and the left hand is used when there is any harm or dirt, like using the toilet.
Imaam An-Nawawi said: 'It is preferable to use the right hand (rather than the left hand) in anything that requires honour, like Wudu (ablution) Ghusl (having a bath to remove major impurity), putting on clothes, shoes, socks, trousers, entering the mosque, using Siwak, eyeliner (Kohl), etc.'
There is no doubt that using the right hand to hold or carry the Qur'an, has more importance than using it to put on socks.
Al-'Izz Ibn 'Abdus-Salaam, spoke eloquently about the desirability of using the right hand saying: 'There is no doubt that encountering what is honourable with what is honourable is something good (reasonable) in mind.'
Finally, we have to say, however, that we do not know of any person of knowledge who gave a Fatwa that it is impermissible or dislikeable to hold or carry the Qur'an with the left hand.

found i agree with you on that one. I am sure i have read a billion times that passing wind nullifies ablution. Though i remember reading something about passing wind constitutes sound or a smell. Cant say i have looked into this one in too much detail though!
