Is the Christian God's love unconditional?

Ok, some questions which have been playing on my mind, I am genuinely interested.

Surely his love is on the condition that you are a) a Christian and b) follow his rules?

Also, if God loves everyone as much as he does, why can't he save everyone by simply appearing to them? If I could save my children by doing this then I would in an instant, rather than turning up at the end and destroying the ones who weren't Christian.

Good grief. I, cant speak for others, did years of critical thinking. Years years and years. Till in the end I got heartily sick of critical thinking. I ended up saying, right God if you want me you are going to have to come and get me. and he still waited 6 months after that. Thanks God!

capsium · 30/11/2013 18:53

head I do the same! with authors. I do wonder what affects people at a subconscious level, though. It is how propaganda works. It comes to light when you experience different cultures and realise how much is cultural.

But yes, part of engagement involves a critical examination. In the same way Biblical Truth is the measure I use to help me to critically examine what I read.

I disagree I think there is an element of evidence in feelings.
Love for example I love my family. No physical evidence can take away the love I feel it is within me and is very much real. A scientist can not give evidence for emotion just states it is a part of us we have emotions feelings.
We feel pain that is not physically and cannot really be explain.
When we break a bone it hurts because our physically body is hurt but when we our hurt emotional ut still hurts because our inner being our soul is hurt.

capsium · 30/11/2013 19:03

Yes emotions are somewhat elusive...interesting that smell as well can evoke emotion. I like the way in the Bible that the prayers of the saints are described as being perfumed...

sunshine401 · 30/11/2013 19:12

Yes definitely for me lavender relaxes me and makes me calm and mint refeshes me and gives me a bit of humpt Grin

sunshine401 · 30/11/2013 19:13

I have both in sented candles and sticks.

capsium · 30/11/2013 19:14

Music too affects us in elusive ways. Even when there is no lyric. How come some chords are melancholy or hopeful?

headinhands · 30/11/2013 19:21

WRT the love I have for my DH, the fact that I love my husband isn't a wild and incredible claim. There isn't anything to suggest otherwise. Me loving my husband doesn't require you to perform any mental/logical gymnastics. It doesn't matter either way and is inconsequential to anybody else wether I do or don't love Mr Headinhands, whereas your claims about god are about all of humanity.

capsium · 30/11/2013 19:25

God and humanity are intertwined.

headinhands · 30/11/2013 19:29

So is football

capsium · 30/11/2013 19:31

For some football is practically a religion! Not for me though.

Golddigger · 30/11/2013 19:35

Do you believe that we have a soul headinhands?

headinhands · 30/11/2013 20:22

What do you mean by soul gold?

sunshine401 · 30/11/2013 20:33

A soul is an inner being in us. The part of us that feels emotions and lives within our physical body.

It may not matter to anyone whether you love your dh I am sure you do. But I am sure it matters to you and you know it is real.

Golddigger · 30/11/2013 20:39

I knew that I would get an answer like that headinhands! Grin

Dont worry sunshine401. She understands.

headinhands · 30/11/2013 20:40

What you call a soul, I call a mind, which is my brain. As far as I know there isn't any evidence of a soul, as in we don't think or feel with anything other than our brain.

Don't get me wrong, I love love, I love loving my husband and I love his love but we both acknowledge we are just a collection of synapses and whatnots. Doesn't make it any less wonderful though and wouldn't want to be without him.

headinhands · 30/11/2013 20:43

Not at all, we need to clarify the terms we use. In this area there are words that can have very different meanings like soul and spirit. I think it's perfectly reasonable and necessary to establish what you (gold) meant when you said 'soul'.

capsium · 30/11/2013 20:52

Makes you just the result of your biology though head.

I believe we have:

Spirit : essence of our being which continues after death
Soul : conscious thinking part, our mind
Body: our flesh, physical being

Our Spirit is the part which is Saved. Our mind and body has to be refreshed each day, renewed in the knowledge of Christ.

One reason I like this in contrast to the collection of synapses is I don't like the Law of Entropy. It offers more hope. I think it also reflects how in life culture can affect state of mind which can in turn affect physiology. I also don't like the thought of scientists doing brain maps to determine our state of being and potential in life.

headinhands · 30/11/2013 21:10

I don't think that I'm just a collection of synapses because It's nice to think that, I just don't have a reason to think otherwise. But not to worry because I happen to like my synapses, and I like my husbands too :)

capsium · 30/11/2013 21:14

head what do you think can affect changes in physiology, apart from physical injury and disease?

capsium · 30/11/2013 21:21

Oh and apart from diet too?

Do you think belief might affect physiological changes? How much of an important factor is stress? What is your take on the Placebo and Nocebo effect?

BackOnlyBriefly · 30/11/2013 22:25

capsium interesting that you count 3 parts not 2 as most christians seem to. which part or parts goes to heaven?

capsium · 30/11/2013 22:32

The spirit back. I appreciate in common usage is spirit and soul is often used interchangeably.

capsium · 30/11/2013 22:35

I find the 3 parts useful in my understanding, concerning the distinction between mind and spirit, since not every thought that you have after being Salvation might be Biblically correct. Your mind has be refreshed yet your spirit is Saved.

capsium · 30/11/2013 22:37

^ being Saved. Typo
