I think our church is going a bit tits-up at the moment
not massively, but the Healing Ministry leader has asked for the organ to be played softly at the end of the service because the chapel they use is right next to the pipes.
Bloody daft suggestion, and of course DH and Asst Organist are very upset about it. They feel like their form of worship is being put down in favour of someone else's form of music.
NV is quite concerned because he really wants to do the right thing for everybody.
I told him today that I think the only solution (given that they can't move to somewhere else in the church due to steps/other people using that space) is that the Healing Ministry starts after the Organ Voluntary has ended. That way, the people doing/receiving the Healing can have a period of time to prepare, and it means that the Organists can still perform their own form of worship (which of course, other people enjoy listening to)- can you imagine quiet voluntaries every week? it'd start to sound miserable!
(and the organ really can't go that quiet)
I did make sure that I used the words "important" about the form of worship when I spoke to NV. I thought I put the point across very well, and sounded like I wanted the best solution for everyone (without sounding like a "it's not fair!!" child
). Thankfully, I'm not directly involved, so it looks like I'm speaking for them rather than wanting my own way.
NV said that of course, everybody thinks their own part in the service is the most important, so it was essential that everyone felt that they weren't being put out or shoved to one side. I said "exactly, everyone's part is equally important".
Still think my solution is the only practicable one, but we'll see.
(he did say about putting it back in the middle of the service, but I said then it looks like we're saying "you've only got so much time to do this" which is a bad message. (and the organ's going to be playing the final hymn too, so that really doesn't help!))
NV is introducing new things bit by bit, one of which is the way they say the introduction of the readings. So, he wrote it out. put it on the lectern and emailed everyone involved. Well, he emailed DH. So, thankfully on Sunday, DH noticed a new piece of paper on the lectern, had a quick read then had to rush over to Asst Organist to let him know it had already started. I was a bit surprised at NV for not having put a copy on the organ (y'know, the ones who need to know it's changed so they know when to play! It's not the kind of error you can cover up...
) because he's normally rather thoughtful. DH is going on the assumption that he thought DH would print out a copy, but my dad always says "Assume makes an ass out of U and ME"
