I thought seeing as our other thread has gone somewhere into the oblivion that is old MN pages, I would start us up again anew for a new term. This is a place for those who are Christians (and anyone who's not, we're not an exclusive little club) Grin to chat about life, theology, church, any other stuff and of course Graham Kendrick, as nickel would not forgive me if I forgot to mention him Grin

So all welcome, old and new, it would be fun to chat and chew over anything that comes to mind. Lurkers say hello!

Anyone got a nice juicy topic to get the ball rolling then? Or if not come say hi anyway and tell us how you are doing. :)

Oh, I hope it is just a 24 hour bug, Nickel

nickelbabe · 25/01/2013 17:04

me too.
i still feel rough.

problem is, i'm finding it difficult to give DD food because I don't fancy food myself.
so, she keeps asking for BFs because she's starving! Shock

thanksamillion · 25/01/2013 19:02

Hope you're feeling better soon nickel.

It's freezing here and has snowed all day. We've got 50cm at least and it's still snowing. DD1 was supposed to be in a concert in our nearest town tomorrow - not a chance! No one is going anywhere.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 26/01/2013 14:41

Freezing here too although the sun came out briefly this morning. It was a bit of a shock to see blue sky.

KayHarker · 26/01/2013 21:54

and in keeping with the weather theme, it's peeing it down here and blowing a gale.

I cut all the kids hair today so I've been picking inch long hair out of everywhere. Going to a new church tomorrow - happy clappy for those keeping score Grin

thanksamillion · 27/01/2013 08:28

How was the church Kay? We're doing family church at home today - a good job really as we're still pretty much snowed in.

GinandJag · 27/01/2013 08:31

I'm going to skip church this morning to watch the tennis. The last few years I have been on sidesman duty at this time. Fortunately, we have a very good evevning service which I like to go to once in a while.

MadHairDay · 27/01/2013 11:43

I'm at home watching the tennis too Gin Grin come on Andy!

Kay, hope the new church is good, let us know how it goes.

nickel, hope you feel better now :(

All the snow has melted here, much to dcs disappointment. On a happy note I got out on a walk yesterday for the first time in 2 months. I didn't manage for long but it was such a good feeling to be out there with my family, was exhausted for the rest of the day but in a nice way, and chest has held up though still on abs.

Very friendly church - kids loved the kids work and have begged us to go back next Sunday, so that's a positive. Hard not to go with a church shopping attitude - but after feeling as dry as old bones wrt to spiritual things, it was almost like there was a chink of light.

niminypiminy · 27/01/2013 13:55

Kay, that sounds hopeful - chinks of light can sometimes feel like a wonderful thing.

Our church at the moment feels a bit like this clip from Rev. It's grim.

nickelbabe · 27/01/2013 14:50

skipping church?! Shock

I skipped choir practice on Friday cos I was dead and I felt guilty!

today at chirch had a very strange air about it. everyone seemed so optimistic it was lovely. it wss really happy abd spirotually uplifting.

we had oh for a thousand tongues to sing as the first hymn and one churchh one faith one lord as the last hymn. lovely.
I have been rater worried about tthis new vicar coming but I think it'll befine. I hope Grin

nickelbabe · 27/01/2013 14:53

you really dohave to be church shopping when you go.

I'm glad you liked it :)

Dutchoma · 27/01/2013 14:53

Dead on a Friday and risen on the Sunday. Have I heard that before? Hmm

nickelbabe · 27/01/2013 14:54

that could be me Grin.

I was going to type dead ill but I'm on this tablet and extra words are hard! Blush

niminypiminy · 27/01/2013 16:09

Nickel snap!! we had Oh for a thousand tongues to sing as the closing hymn -- after three worship songs that were alternately cheesy and dreary.

Hope you're feeling better soon -- and lovely to hear that you (and your church) are feeling optimistic about the new vicar.

nickelbabe · 27/01/2013 16:11

what were your crap ones?
ours were chosen on the lectionary but all fitted the idea of the incoming incumbent Grin

and the first reading was the parts of the body one

niminypiminy · 27/01/2013 16:20

I've repressed the memory... No, hang on, one was the one that has the chorus 'Come, Lord Jesus', there was a kids one, it wasn't 'wicked wicked skill skill,to have a friend like Jesus', but of that ilk. The vicar is doing a sermon series that leading up to a full-blooded exposition of penal substitutionary atonement (we had sin last week, judgement this week),

Dutchoma · 27/01/2013 16:52

We are practising "The way of the cross" for Lent. Singing it on the 2nd March. Has anybody else done this and what did you think?

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 27/01/2013 16:59

Ah - sermon series - too easy to get out the hobby horse and take it out for a canter. The lectionary is a wonderful thing that takes you to places in scripture you wouldn't think to go.

It was marginally warmer in church this morning that outside which was a blessing. The choir pulled off a really difficult piece which I thought they were going to murder, but it was very, very good. Everyone in church looked really tired. All that snow has made everyday life so much harder this week and it really showed.

nickelbabe · 27/01/2013 17:12

oog greeny, yoy have to tell ys the piece.

we did britten's new year carol which I thought went really well then asst organist said it went flat at the end. it was accompanied Blush (albeit quietly)

KayHarker · 27/01/2013 20:00

We sang Holy Holy Holy, which I do enjoy - though it was odd led by an acoustic guitar and raucous drum set. :) Nice and warm building, though!

Tuo · 27/01/2013 20:30

An eclectic musical mix here that went from 'Brightest and best' via Stuart Townend and something else chorus-y to 'O Thou who at Thy Eucharist didst pray'... It was still freezing, and - to everyone's deep joy - they announced that the heating would be temporarily turned off for most of this week because of the building works, so next week will be even colder.

niminypiminy · 27/01/2013 20:53

Greenheart, you are so right about sermon series and lectionary.

Tuo, that's slightly worrying news about it getting even colder - at least I suppose the weather has warmed up, though that won't make much difference until you get outside.

I did a bit of church adultery this evening and went to an evening service at Another Church. It was an Iona service so the music was all Bell/Farrell, which isn't so bad once in a while, and there was a very thought-provoking reflection on Matthew 8 around World Holocaust Day. It did make me wonder what, apart from bloody-minded fidelity, I stay at my church for. I suppose it is warm - my church on the side is cold.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 28/01/2013 07:44

Cantique de Jean Racine by Faure

I didn't think that 20 singers and a piano could pull it off but they did. Go them!

niminypiminy · 28/01/2013 09:17

That's a hard piece to do well -- needs well blended voices and everybody to be in tune. Well done them!
