thats my arguement but on their side as well i am a gp to my cousins, my cousin is one of my gps and my mum is gp to her nephews and they are all great gps. however my uncle is my sisters gp and he is useless and my friend chose her brother to be a gp and he was also useless - maybe its just men?

ermintrude - that really is a very judgmental and ratty post. Tommy's comment about the agnostic godparent was clearly light hearted.

it's a bit difficult if that's the norm in your family tweeni. Can you tell her you're also thinking of who will be gps to your next baby so can't give them all to this one (long shot maybe...)

tweeni · 19/02/2006 15:08

possibly - also a bit concerned cos i have chose her partner as a gp - he's very suitable but i worry about what if they split up but i can't very well unchoose him now i have already asked!choosing couples who are friends it doesn't matter so much if they split up cos you usually stay friends with both, but when its family you don't tend to.

We chosed DH's best friend and my best friend. We have agreed that if something happened to us, DS will go to my bestfriend and her DH's home, mostly because they have a simmilar way of thinking to us and also because we wanted people who were not likely to disapear from our lives (or old friendships who have survived well to all our "move-away-yet-another-time" life).

i don't know i just think 6 gps is a bit excessive. although i have heard of many people who do have this amount. does anyone know of anyone with more than 6?

Our two had 4 ghodparents apiece ,only a couple being catholic. My brother and his wife are two but couldnt get back to Britain fron the us, so mmy mum and dad stood in ,which made them as pleased as punch. It was a nice turn of events 'cos i had proxy godparents as well.In our wills other members of the family are named as carers so lots of people are included.

proxy gps?

moyasmum · 20/02/2006 14:32

Yes proxy- stand in for someone who cant be there. The designated gp's name is entered in the register, and the proxy signs the register with their name and (proxy)

Tommy · 20/02/2006 14:38

thank you harpsi
wanted to write that myself but couldn't be sure if they were worth the explanation or, indeed, they would understand it

tweeni · 20/02/2006 21:39

i knew what proxy meant!i just didn't know you could have proxy godparents.

Chandra · 20/02/2006 22:33

I still have my reservations about proxy gps, if they can not make the ceremony, how could they manage to be there for your child if needs be?

moyasmum · 21/02/2006 13:13

sorry didnt mean to offend.
In my case ,my godmother was always very active in my life, but couldnt travel from sw to cumbria(no car 40 years ago)at that precise time . The proxy was our next door neighbour at the time.
