the first one is nearly full.

Anyone welcome, it's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

OP posts:

lots of action ones at that age:
If I were a Butterfly is brilliant.

and some great suggestions here you can listen to them as well as see the words.

nickelbabyhatcher · 28/03/2011 17:01

and eh's got the whole world in his hand.
i loved that one.

nickelbabyhatcher · 28/03/2011 17:02

He's got !

nickelbabyhatcher · 28/03/2011 17:02

(and live music's not that far off from correct in our house!)

essenceofSES · 28/03/2011 17:03

Ooh thanks nickel :)
I'm on my phone at the moment so will have a look when I'm next on the laptop :)

TotallyUnheardOf · 28/03/2011 17:32

Nickel... I am laughing a lot at you describing yourself as a 'picky stander'. Grin We had an embarrassing moment yesterday (which I put down to the absence of the choir) when the hymn that normally precedes the gospel was a kind of anthem on a sheet rather than a hymn from the book, with the verses sung solo (by one of the canons) and the congregation only joining in for the chorus. So no-one really knew whether they were meant to stand or not, so about six people stood and everyone else sat, then three of the standers got embarrassed and sat down, and it was only when the gospel procession started to move that people realised they needed to be standing, and started shuffling to their feet in a sort of Mexican wave passing down the church.

I wondered why that gospel reading needed to be so long. I reckon it could have stopped at v.26 and still conveyed the same basic meaning. (But no disrespect intended... I do realise that whoever it is in the CofE who sets these things probably knows what they are doing better than I do... Blush).

Oh, and I looked again at the website to try to find out more about the cafe church, and discovered that there are other things during the working week that I might also get to sometimes (lunchtime prayer group, etc.). So maybe the solution was right under my nose this whole time.

madhairday · 28/03/2011 18:42

SES, the New wine Little Angels series of cds has some fab songs on for the little ones, some actiony and some more quiet and sleep-inducing, we have loved them for a long time but my dc have sadly grown out of them now :(

TUO - lmao at the mexican wave in the cathedral, can get like that sometimes!!

thanksamillion · 28/03/2011 19:26

We love the Great Big God CD although some of the songs are a bit Hmm. We've even got it in Romanian as well!

Part of the idea of the photo thing was to help the DCs remember and feel connected with family/friends as we obviously don't see them that often. I try and give a little update about what people are doing when they choose someone.

Nickel I have to say that neither DH or I are big 'pray-er out louders' but we wanted to pray with the DCs and it's felt quite natural. We always invite visitors to join us (we have a lot of visitors) and almost everyone manages to pray with us (we don't force them!) even my Dad who I think would really be a (silent) quaker if he had the option Grin. So you might surprise yourselves!

PositiveAttitude · 28/03/2011 20:13

Can I gatecrash with a question??? Blush

Are any of you lovely ladies church treasurers?

I think I may have complained once too many times about our inadequate CT and may have just talked myself into a job!!

TotallyUnheardOf · 28/03/2011 22:20

No experience of being a treasurer, PA, but lots of experience of opening my big mouth and ending up with more on my plate (if that's not a rather ugly mixed metaphor!). You'll be great, I'm sure. I think the main thing with anything involving money is scrupulous record-keeping. It's not up to you to make the money, after all; you just need to know where it is!

Oh, and I don't think it's possible to gatecrash a place where the door is always open, is it? Smile

PositiveAttitude · 29/03/2011 07:17

Thanks TUO. I am the book-keeper already, so can definitely say they are scrupulously kept. Grin

madhairday · 29/03/2011 10:19

Bet you'll be great PA. I've not done that job but dh has before, and it's just about keeping on top and as you say meticulous record keeping.

Milly, which songs on GBG do you think are Hmm ? We have all those and love them, intrigued now!!

Feeling like crap today. Lungs playing up yesterday, pain got unbearable so heavy duty painkillers and more antibiotics. Feeling rather fed up.

nickelbabyhatcher · 29/03/2011 10:46

i wouldn't like to be treasurer! Shock
our churchwarden is also treasurer, and although it's very straight-forward (as in, count the bills, add the income, tot it all up at the end), it can be hard from the POV that you have to go "no, you can't spend that".

What you do need to think about, though, is gift aid.
say, if someone wants to make some church posters, and they go "oh, I'll do it at home, don't worry" - you still need them to claim the cost of the materials - for the reason that it gives a true account of the running costs - a lot of people don't think about this aspect.
Our treasurer says, claim the expenses, then donate the amount you spent back to the church as a gift aid donation, if you want to help the churc hout with costs.
The problem with people not claiming their expenses is that at the end of the year, the diocese goes "oh, it doesn't cost you as much to run your church as we thought - we're going to take away a bit of leeway with your Quota help now, cos you obviously don't need as mcuh help"

nickelbabyhatcher · 29/03/2011 11:03

funny, but TUO's "but lots of experience of opening my big mouth and ending up with more on my plate" reminded me that I have to email the admin lady to get a notice put on the news-sheet about wanting articles for an Easter Magazine (can't do one if we have no articles!)

thanksamillion · 29/03/2011 12:29

MHD hope you're feeling better soon.

I had a look at the GBG CD to see what I was talking about - I think it was the rap one mainly, but also the Romanian version has some weird arrangements with a scary lady singing and I think that was more what I was thinking about Smile

madhairday · 29/03/2011 13:17

Oh yes dh hates the rap one and always presses the skip button when we have it on in the car. He also sniggers at 'God you're so cool' which the dc love. Not convinced on that one myself, heheh! nickel would love it Wink

nickelbabyhatcher · 29/03/2011 13:23
Hmm Grin
thanksamillion · 29/03/2011 15:15

I always think of Nickel when I hear songs like that now.

I was struggling to keep control of myself on Sunday in church as the singing group were doing a song to a backing track that made it sound like a 1970s Eurovision hit. I really wanted them to start swaying and swinging their trousers (well skirts for the women as you're not allowed to wear trousers in church here Hmm).

nickelbabyhatcher · 29/03/2011 15:37

so glad you find me a subject of mockery

Wink
thanksamillion · 29/03/2011 15:52

we love you really nickel Grin

madhairday · 29/03/2011 16:00

heheh at Eurovision worship - ouch!!

Nickel, you have pg hormones my lovely. We like to fondly refer to your musical taste, because to be honest yours is probably much more refined than the rest of us, pmsl.

God you;re so cool
there's no one else, no there's no one else like you
God you're so cool
and that is why I love you so much.

LOVE IT, you have to!! Grin Grin

nickelbabyhatcher · 29/03/2011 16:04

I don't think God's cool.
Jesus, maybe, but God's proven himself to be a bit mardy over the years Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/03/2011 16:10

well Jesus wasn't exactly in a good mood when he turned the tables upside town in the temple Grin Wink

and besides what about the Trinity - I guess the Holy Spirit mus be pretty cool too Grin

OP posts:
madhairday · 29/03/2011 16:31

Hmmm depends on definition of cool, I guess Grin

Have been playing with PD today not being well enough to go out and have done which springs from thoughts about my seekers group as we are doing Father God this week. I love doing this stuff!! Have also blogged and caught up on all my forums today. Am I allowed to stop being creative and mindlessly read mumsnet for the remainder of the day? (Apart from playing with the dc, naturalement)

madhairday · 30/03/2011 10:27

I've killed the thread!!!! Always wanted to do that Grin

morning everyone
