the first one is nearly full.

Anyone welcome, it's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

actually, it does fit the music!
Grin

Ha!
plus, let's use a proper communion hymn

Let all mortal flesh keep silence
and with fear and trembling stand
ponder nothing earthly-minded
for with blessings in his hand
Christ our god to earth descended
his full homage to demand

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 09/03/2011 17:33

but he didn't use just any food he used bread >

madhairday · 09/03/2011 17:34

(etc)

getting carried away now

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 09/03/2011 17:34

do those boldings (!) mean that you're telling us to shut up, get our head of the clouds and count ourselves lucky Grin

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 17:34

we don't do fodo that goes off.

there, that's an advantage of wafers - they don't go off in 3 days like bread does

(and bread doesn't rise again after the 3 days either!)

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 17:34

(dunno what fodo is - i meant food)

madhairday · 09/03/2011 17:35

Quiche! Yes, you could have quiche

Here is quiche, here is wine

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 17:35

yup!
Grin

i've got to go home!
don't carry on the blazing row debate when i'm not here! i'll come back to discover you've all agreed i'm mad and need to be committed!
Shock

madhairday · 09/03/2011 17:37

hahahahahaha @ keep silence

wafers don't rise again neither. so there. And bread should only be used for one eucharist, so don't need to 'keep'.

MaryBS · 09/03/2011 17:38

real Christians don't eat quiche.

Our wafers are quite nice actually. We don't have the cardboard cutouts, we have the light melt in your mouth ones. Wouldn't feed a hungry apostle though!

nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 17:38

in our church ,we have to ahve "reserved sacrament" because we only get a priest every 2 weeks (while we're in the naughty chair interregnum), so we need the "bread" to last at least 10 days (and we have wednesday communion, so it's 3 services)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 09/03/2011 17:39

they only started using wafers because of the issue of bread not keeping..........we're a bit better at keeping food fresh these days Wink

OP posts:
nickelprincess · 09/03/2011 17:39

aha! so you admit to there being a practical purpose!
Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 09/03/2011 17:42

yes but they weren't traditional they used to be practical- now they're just cardboard.............and even the nice soft melt in the mouth ones go cardboardy if you don't use that batch up quick enough

OP posts:
MaryBS · 09/03/2011 17:49

We have reserved sacrament too, stored in an airtight ciborium in an aumbry. We also have a Wed service (led by yours truly today) from the reserved.

MaryBS · 09/03/2011 18:13

Oh and that parish administrator's position is mine, at least for the moment (3 month contract) :). Thank God, the money will come in handy! :)

essenceofSES · 09/03/2011 18:19

Wow! You lot have been v chatty!!!

Interesting bread/wafer debate.
For me, it needs to be unleavened bread as that is what was used at The Last Supper. Wafers fit that but I'm sure there is a more bread like substance that would do too. We always use wafers and I think it is partly because they are unleavened and partly because it is easier on a practical note with the reserved sacrament.

Can't remember who posted the "Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" but that is one of my favourite moments of our Easter services, when we sing that very solemnly.

All a bit hectic here this week. Out last night and tonight with RCIA stuff. I'll fill you in on that another time if people aren't familiar with it / if you're interested!

Wishing you all an Ash Wednesday and Lent full of blessings!

madhairday · 09/03/2011 18:19

Oh that's great Mary, well done! :)

dh has just let the side down by citing that wafers are 'very useful for counting numbers of communicants'

essenceofSES · 09/03/2011 18:19

Cross posted, Mary - great that you have the position on trial! Hope it all works out :)

madhairday · 09/03/2011 18:20

Hi SES :)

madhairday · 09/03/2011 18:21

RCIA

rite of catholic initiation something?

hmmmm....can't remember.....

thanksamillion · 09/03/2011 20:27

Well done Mary! Glad you got the position.

I'm firmly in the bread camp (we have nice homemade brioche type stuff) but am prepared to accept that Jesus was probably using unleavened bread and the practicality of wafers. I wonder if there are communities round the world that use other things (rice?) although you'd rather loose the 'sharing' aspect.

I think Methodists probably win for the tidiest communion - we used to have not only the little glasses but also a white sliced load cut into little squares to be handed out. No messy ripping the bread apart there Grin

MaryBS · 09/03/2011 21:13

Yay to MHD's DH! He ought to know! I trust you're going to acknowledge his position in the household by now agreeing with him?? Wink

Biscuit Wine

Just back from the Ash Wed service, suitably penitent and ashed :( (thats me being penitent, rather than sad)

PositiveAttitude · 09/03/2011 21:15

Well done Mary. Welcome to my world!!

As for the bread vs wafer debate, the only time I had a wafer it got stuck on the roof of my mouth and I was gagging! Blush Avoided like the plague since!! Grin

Good old bit of bread for me, any day!

MaryBS · 10/03/2011 09:03

After 3 months, they'd like the job to go to a local, although I wouldn't automatically be ruled out of the position. My job will be mostly setting it up and getting it to run smoothly.

The good (or the bad) thing is, they already know my family circumstances, including that I've got an operation coming, that I'm on the autistic spectrum, etc etc, and that is still OK. :)
