I wanted to put some random thoughts and stuff regarding church, without it having to be a debate or a specific topic (and not prayers, either)

It's basically, a "what happened at church (or in my musical/spiritual life) this week" thread. Grin
Please join me!

I'll start:

We had Midnight Mass (on Christmas Eve, would you believe!), and it was half past 11, everyone was sitting and ready for the service to start - I waved the organist to give me my notes: he was just about to plat them when:
" TAXI FOR suchandsuch " came blaring out of our speaker system. Angry
There's a Wetherspoon's over the road and looks like the DJ's mike was on the same frequency as our radio mikes.
So, all the congregation started giggling and we had to wait 5 minutes until everyone was calm and collected enough to carry on.

OP posts:

nooooouuuuuoooo ! [lalalalalalallalalalalalla]

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 16:44

well - actually the common people singing in church is also an even newer phenomena.

Back in the good old days of Palestrina and the likes the common man wasn't good enough to do much at all in church other than sit and listen to music sung in Latin and be preached at Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 16:46

the Free Wee's in Scotland have only just agreed to allow any hymns at all to be used - having up until November last year only allowed unaccompanied Psalm singing

and heaven fobid, even when they were allowed to sing, women/girls in the choir Shock

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 16:47

I thought the wee frees were more liberal than that? Confused

i know even less about them now!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 16:49

oh yes - girls and women in the choir, or Shock - in charge of the music!!!

No Wee Free's very conservative \link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-11795996\with their music}

Friend at church with link to Scotland has attended services in there before.

'Nowt wrong with a bit of hand waving

Baroque - too right, worship in bible times was all very unrestrained with all dancing and stuff. Loin cloths may have been featured. Much as I dislike robes however, I think I'd possibly prefer them Grin

I have lost you on fb Baroque. I liked your status updates :)

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:21

wow. I like unaccompanied singing, though, it's lovely (if it stays in tune...)

I never had her on FB. she doesn't like me. :(

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:22

oh botheration (sorry Lord - thought in my mind was a little stronger than that Blush) - I did a MASSIVE cull (over 150 people went) the other week........I've already had to sheepishly request 2 I accidentally deleted........ermm - if you'd like to find me again and request I will happily add you again (and you get first dibs on my videos when I do them as I always upload to FB before YT Grin).

It' was those blooming ultra restrained folks in the middle ages (and later) and the likes who made everyone thinkg we all had to sit sit and be prim and proper in church Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:23

nickel - I don't know who you are on FB Shock - and afaik you've never requested me to be a friend either Sad

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:25

I don't know your real name!

I'll pm you.

(and tbh was a bit scared to ask! Blush )

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:26

are any of you JT??

madhairday · 24/01/2011 17:27

Will find you Baroque, you're on several friends I think :) my initials lc

Agreed re middle ages and church becoming as church is often known today. Tis why I long to break out of the mould....but I do appreciate what good has grown with it too (honest gov!)

And no no no - Shine Jesus Shine not on the organ....even with the best organist, just no!!!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:28

haha - have replied to your PM and requested - I can't believe you were scared to ask Confused

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:28

ah, and your beautiful children! Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:30

and the cat - don't forget the cat - he's my fluffy baby Blush

madhairday · 24/01/2011 17:32

nickel can I add you too? Grin

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:33

I saw the cat - Grin

we (well, DH) have two cats - they're both pitch black and have a habit of lying at the top of the stairs in the dark - I'm amazed i haven't tripped over one Hmm

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:34

only if you admit that Shine can be played on the organ - my DH did it yesterady and I think it sounds better on the organ (when done by someone who knows what they're doing) than on any other instrument.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:35

well - I wouldn't go as far to say as that it sounds better on the organ - but it's certainly one that can be transferred to organ without any undesired consequences Grin

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:36

you are. [harumph]

I preferred it, but i'm biased.
Grin

madhairday · 24/01/2011 17:37
Grin

Well, what can I say. To be nickel's FB friend I must deny my preferences re Graham Kendrick mixed with organs (mmm sounds dodgy that)

Well.....OK. It can be played on the organ. Will that do? Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:37

actually Nicekl - if you have a look at my videos - there's one of DS2 singing once in Royal. It sounds like he has nerves - but actually I've discovered that apparently there's a really bad lag from the organ to the back of the church - which is worse when the church is packed.........only I only found this out afterwards.

He was very brave - there were 200 people in the church and he'd only just turned 7 Grin

nickelbabysnatcher · 24/01/2011 17:49

it'll do Wink

I'll have a look at that - all churches have that problem - you have to record the singers from where they are, or they don't match the organ. :(
We often have to change ourtiming when we recess in the last hymn, cos when we get to back, we're too fast.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 24/01/2011 17:51

yeah I know - problem was I didn't realise how bad it is in our church until poor DS2 was at the back singing. In previous years it's been older ones that can work out/adjust to the lag themselves. Ahh well - everyone thought he was lovely - and the key thing was that everyone could hear him. Which is always a big bonus Grin
