I wanted to put some random thoughts and stuff regarding church, without it having to be a debate or a specific topic (and not prayers, either)

It's basically, a "what happened at church (or in my musical/spiritual life) this week" thread. Grin
Please join me!

I'll start:

We had Midnight Mass (on Christmas Eve, would you believe!), and it was half past 11, everyone was sitting and ready for the service to start - I waved the organist to give me my notes: he was just about to plat them when:
" TAXI FOR suchandsuch " came blaring out of our speaker system. Angry
There's a Wetherspoon's over the road and looks like the DJ's mike was on the same frequency as our radio mikes.
So, all the congregation started giggling and we had to wait 5 minutes until everyone was calm and collected enough to carry on.

OP posts:

let what one carry on around you Confused

Oh that choir practice with the guides sounds fabulous Grin. Isn't it great getting "non-singers" making a great noise and enjoying it.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 11:32

rounds rounds rounds - oooo - there's that one. What's it called. ermm - is it Father We Adore you - it's really short (and easy) and can be sung as a round.

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 12:06

"let what one carry on around you Confused"
the discussion of musci to play in the car - i haven't got a clue what's around and popular at the moment, but i didn't want jaffa to think I was moving on...

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 12:08

ooh, Father we adore you looks good - will have to find the sheet music....

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 12:17

you've got the hideous Orange Hymn Book don't you?? It's in there

jaffacakeaddict · 29/01/2011 12:17

Nickel - my tastes are fairly wide ranging and last year I went to hear a concert which included Rutters Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day. I find I need something reasonably up tempo when I'm driving though, otherwise I end up being late

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 12:19

and - well it's not really a round, but it can be sung round "style". Seek Ye First (they'll probably know that one too). You can do it so that one half of them sings each verse x2, and the other half sings it normally - and then you get that lovely round effect in the chours. Although you can also it "striagh" round style by having the 2nd half starting when the first half get to the chorus.

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 12:22

that should be its proper title "The Hideous Orange Hymn Book" - i might email Kevin Mayhew and let him know Grin

jaffa - that's fine, i just wanted everyone else to have a chance of recommending something! in the car I listen mostly to the radio and haven't a clue about christian posp music Grin

I like Seek Ye First - I bet that would work as a round. you're right, the chorus would sound great doen like that.
I've also been lookign at Tallis's Cannon, which looks pretty simple to do.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 12:25

don't play Seek Ye from The Hideous Ornage Hymn Book though - it's best played in it's proper version from somewher like mission praise.

Whenever we have it at church we always split the congregation to do the one half singing verses x2, and the other singing it normally.

If I close my eyes while playing the chorus I can almost imagine I have a HUGE choir Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 12:52

ooooooo I think I'm being awfully clever.

Currently burning a disc........which (hopefully) I will be able to stick into my DVD player and get a menu, and stuff and be able to either play both of my Christian Unity DVD's back to back, or just select one of them to watch (like a "scene").

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 13:00

We've got it in another book, i think.
I'll check it out.
I wish the Hideous Orange Hymn Book had never been printed - they mess around with too much.
You know we can't have Be Thou My Vision anymore because the Hideous Orange Hymn Book's version is completely unsingable. DH refuses to choose it.
There are a few they've fucked up, like Onwards Christian Pilgrims (reason? because it makes war look good - but it's okay to keep Fight the Good fight, though?? Confused ), and I reckon we should create our own little book of the proper versions (and ones they've missed out like Christian Dost Thou Hear Them? )

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 13:02

That does sound clever!

I've pre-ordered PD9. i'm going to get DH to play Jerusalem on the organ, and us record it, and put it on an audio CD for the WI.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 13:04

OMG OMG OMG - it WORKED - I am playing a DVD of my 2 videos on my TV Shock

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 13:05
Grin yeay! round of applause! Grin
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 13:07

it sounds amazing - as of course the sound quality on the TV is much better that on either of the laptops it's been played on previously.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 29/01/2011 13:57

oooo oooo ooo - you know you were asking about adding text and stuff and I said I hadn't figured out an easy way.

I just HAVE.

It's in titles - you can do all sorts of fancy stuff.

nickelbabysnatcher · 29/01/2011 14:11

ooh!
This programme sounds better and better! Grin
can't wait to get it!

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 31/01/2011 12:22

Monday afternoon, guys!
Grin

Nothing hugely new to report, but DH and i were discussing the Guides choir thing yesterday afternoon. (okay, I was discussing it and DH was moaning that Sunday Afternoon was for relaxing not spending the whole day on church stuff when he already spends so much time on church stuff blah blah blah Grin )

We've decided (at the moment, it could change!) that we will do the RSCM-specially-written-for-church-music-sunday-hymn When Miriam's Daughters Rise and Sing at the very beginning of the service, and Seek Ye first (by the guides only in their little choir and as a proper round) and Vaughan Williams's Let All the World in Every Corner Sing as communion anthems.

It'll be nice if everyone's finished with communion when we do the Vaughan Williams, because then everyone will be able to sit and listen properly.

Jsut got to work out the logistics of moving everyone around!
So exciting (and it's 5 months away! Shock)

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 31/01/2011 12:24

Miriam's Daughters

madhairday · 31/01/2011 17:40

Sounds great about the guides, nickel. dd has just joined guides after growing out of brownies and is loving it. Sounds fun.

Baroque yay re the vid - still looking into the PD thing - so you mean you can do powerpoint type animated text etc on it? Also can you do movie maker type transitions? (sorry re questions!)

I helped lead the all age yesterday - went well I think. We did anointing with oil as it was the Widow of Zarephath story. So many came up for it, was v powerful :)

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 31/01/2011 17:50

she'll love Guides - i used to love it when i was one! :)
We don't really do much with our uniform groups - it's been suggested that we don't have parade sndays anymore - hopefully we'll get one organised either for Mothering Sunday or Palm Sunday. (with the rainbows and brownies too)

Your anointing service sounds good - I love old traditions like that.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 31/01/2011 17:51

sorry will come back to you re your questions - just to say I've seen them - am currently seething about exH and his GF'

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 31/01/2011 17:52

is it anything we can help with?
(not trying to look nosy but trying to be helpful)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 31/01/2011 17:58

see my latest FB - basically apparently I'm responsible for ensuring that my children don't damage furniture in his GF's house (where he's now living as he's renting his place out)........when I'm sat in my house and there's both him and his GF at hers.......

Best of it is - instead of "It was DS1" "I saw DS2 do it" type answers from the DS's I got blank looks.........

thanksamillion · 31/01/2011 20:40

Hi all
Sorry things not so good Baroque.

It was DD2s 1st birthday yesterday so I've just got into bed having had 14 people round for dinner to celebrate!

A couple of weeks ago I also started what I hope will become a toddler group so I've got that tomorrow morning. I started with 3 Mums from church (one quite peripheral) and I've invited another tomorrow so we'll see what happens. I'm quite excited about it though so I'm really hoping that they turn up.
