Breton, all I know is that if it wasn't for the bad things that happen I would not understand the good. Without difficulty, without struggle and without loss where would I find meaning? How would I understand the preciousness of life if I didn't know that I may lose it?

You may choose to believe that the world works like this by accident or by design, but for me it is often through suffering that love is shown at its greatest.

Hope you are feeling better today, Zinc. xx

Oh -and just to lighten up the thread a bit, I'm sure half of Google and 95% of Wiki is written by a spotty 17 year old yoof in Arkansas.

Trust in your instincts. Isn't that one of the comforts of religion...

(i.e you went through a LOSS, not a deliberate act of violence)

acorntree: I take your point but Catholicism accepts an omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent deity. Everything, according to the Nicene Creed, comes from this creator. Thus there can be nothing outside or beyond the control of that creator. It therefore follows that this creator has the power to prevent bad things, indeed, the premise that this deity is the, "maker of heaven and earth, and of all that is, seen and unseen" also implies that this creator is responsible for bad things that happen and also created evil, although this is explained by the belief in the existence of the Devil, which is basically Dualism.

As an atheist this, to me, is a belief in a capricious deity that has the power to prevent all suffering, indeed is responsible for causing that suffering, but chooses not to do so. Re, the OP's distress on this thread. If one accepts a belief in this omniscient and omnipotent creator, then this creator allowed the poster to become pregnant in full knowledge that it would end in suffering for her and the loss of the child.

Apologies if I cause anyone offence, but I regard such a deity as a real sicko!

And if you are still checking in to this thread, Zinc, please come back and tell us how you are feeling...
We are all routing for you.

Sorry to have disappeared, had v little time over the weekend.

Thank you all for your kindness and thoughts and for taking the time to reply & share your experiences. I am going to sit quietly after DC's bedtime and read through properly.

I feel slightly less wobbly, I think the intitial shock is beginning to wear off thank goodness. And you have all made me feel less alone. DH and I had a chance to really talk on Friday and I felt better for revisiting our thought processes again, and feel like we are in it together, as a couple, and I didn't do this awful thing on my own iyswim.

Thank you all again, you are all so kind.
