I have posted before about our dog's declining health, and he has been declining, with a marked decline the last few days. He is going to the vets this morning. Have found an nice blanket to wrap him in, need to get someone to look after DCs . DH is devastated, he\s had him since he was pup and he's almost 17 , whihc in dog years must be a bout 900!. Am worried how our other dog will cope, if he will survive withouth him

I'm so sorry . It is awful losing your dog. I'm sure your other dog will manage, but he will need lots of extra cuddles. How is their relationship?

My mums Lab is utterly dependant on the bigger, more dominant dog. She is planning on rescuing an old greyhound or whippet to keep her lab company when the Akita goes. Which will be sooner rather than later. He too is in bad health. It's horrific watching them go downhill isn't it?

At least you can console yourself with the thought that your dogs suffering is over.

((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))

Oh I am so sorry...wishing you all lots of love. Poor boy.

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 08:43

my other dog gets so upset when he's alone. getting another dog is not an option, we are looking after PILs dog this week, so that might help so he's not on his own immediately and can adjust to the absence of our other dog.

he's got so thin over the last few days, sight totally gone.. he was blind, but could navigate round the house and garden, but now keeps walking into walls and getting stuck under things.

sat here trying to get the crying done so i can be strong for DH and the DCs

thanks for your kind words

Oh no. How sad. Hugs for you Lulumaam.

SlartyBartFast · 01/06/2010 08:59

if you need to cry just let it out

my dog was pts in december. you know you did the right thing.

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 09:04

thank you ... when we had to put the rabbit to sleep in november, it gave me an inkling of how hard it would be to do this.

i am seriously worried my other dog will pine to death.. if B ever had to go to the vets or out of the house for a few hours, S would just mope around and as soon as B got back, would be running round, giddy and barking and soooo excited. how will he understand he;s never coming back?

i am so sorry for you who have lost your treasured family pets too.

thank you for the support.

I am really sorry you have to go through loosing a beloved dog. It is so hard to come to terms with but, you will cope with the loss once the initial shock has worn off.
I have never owned 2 dogs so I don't know how your other dog will take it. But I am guessing he will need love and comfort from everone around him.

I had to make the decision a couple of years ago to have our 14 year old dog pts. Its was heartbreaking but I knew it was the right thing to do.
Will be thinking of you and your family today

Lubyloo · 01/06/2010 12:03

So sorry to hear this. I lost my cat earlier this year and was devastated. I'm sure your other dog will get used to being on his own and I'm sure he will probably be getting lots of extra attention from you all which will help him.

OhExpletive · 01/06/2010 12:55

So sorry to hear this Lulu. x

piratecat · 01/06/2010 12:57

sorry to hear, it's a sad day for you. sending you lots of love, i don't care, i know how terribly sad it is. i lost my cat in oct.

xx

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 13:23

thank you very much for your kinds words and compassion. the vets were very very sensitive. the worst but was getting them tehre, he hates the car and was distressed and barking, but the vets were ready and gave him a sedative which worked really fast... he was almost asleep quickly...then we both held him and i looked into his eyes until he was gone

it was quick and peaceful and we've all cried a lot

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 01/06/2010 13:40

Sorry Lulumaam You know you did the right thing, though, right? Sometimes the last loving thing we can do for a pet is to let them go peacefully x

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 13:45

yes, absolutely, the last kindness, am glad we were able to make the choice to help him go peacefully, with us with him to his last breath

It was so brave of you to stay with your dog right until the very end. How lovely that you were the last thing he saw. That has brought tears to my eyes. You must have been very brave x

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 14:12

thanks kid.. didn't feel brave at the time, just wanted him to know we were there for him...

Lulumaam I just found this online, not sure if it will be of any help for you and your other dog but thought I would show it to you anyway.

gagamama · 01/06/2010 15:02

So sorry to hear about your dog. I'm sure the other dog will understand he has gone, I do think they have an ability to sense these things and would have had some awareness of his companions decline. 17 is a great age though, it sounds like he had a wonderful life with a peaceful and loving end. You did the right thing.

iamreallysilly · 01/06/2010 15:08

Sorry about your dog, i remenber your previous post. Would agree with gagamama, think your other dog will be aware somehow and will accept it, its not same as when dog is away for short period. 17 is pretty good tho, we had our old dog pts about 8/9 yrs ago, took us about a year to get another dog as it had been DP's first dog & took time to get used to it

kid · 01/06/2010 15:24

I forgot to add the link of what I found!
www.smalldogsparadise.com/alternative-treatments/do-dogs-grieve/

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 16:00

thank you very much

that link is also very helpful, i am going to leave B's basket, and his fleece in the kitchen where it always is, for now.. i was going to wash the bedding, but i think i'll leave it with his scent on for now

S is subdued, he is sitting now, looking at the door, like he is waiting.. he is usually pottering about or in his bed.. so this is most unusual. in almost 12 years, they've barely had a day apart. PILs dog is here until sunday, so am hoping it will ease the transition somehow.. he has a few days t get used to no B..but he's not alone.

all of your kind words are truly apprecaited.
