I have posted before about our dog's declining health, and he has been declining, with a marked decline the last few days. He is going to the vets this morning. Have found an nice blanket to wrap him in, need to get someone to look after DCs . DH is devastated, he\s had him since he was pup and he's almost 17 , whihc in dog years must be a bout 900!. Am worried how our other dog will cope, if he will survive withouth him

I am so sorry Lulu.

We nearly had do do that for my family dog 2 weeks ago, but she has rallied. She got to 12 and is happy, so we are agreed that if things happen again we say goodbye. It's a hard decision

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 17:29

thank you too

we had several occasions over the last few months where we thought this was it, but he rallied. he ate a whole easter egg last year, the vet said that would finish him.. it didn't. we thought he would go on forever. but the last few days were such a rapid, rapid decline, a real marked difference , he simply had no quality of life . he could not even potter round the garden..

it's been a funny old day.

WE put down one old dog last year. The other old dog lived another year, apparently happily.

She was a bit lost for two or three days, and needed more reassuring than normal, and followed me around the house. But then she was just fine. After three months we bought a puppy but she tended to ignore it--I think she was too old.

She died a month back and they are now reunited, both their ashes being buried side-by-side in a part of the garden they used to love playing in.

Thinking of you.

Meant to add, ours were bought at the same time and had lived together for 13 years. I second not washing the bed immediately, too. Keep some familiar smells for a while.

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 21:14

thnk you abr1de and i am sorry your lost your dog too..

i am going to keep the beds as they were for a while yet , certainly until PILs dog has gone home and see how S reacts

thank you x

I'm so sorry - losing a dog leaves such a hole in your life.

Vallhala · 01/06/2010 22:07

I'm so very sorry Lulumaam, and feel for you, having been there too.

My Lab x pined dreadfully when I had to say goodbye to his friend. It was the decision to bring a new pal into his life, a puppy of 6 and a half weeks to his 7 years, which brought the sparkle back to Max's eyes and the wag back to his tail. In time, maybe this might be an option for you?

Meantime take comfort in S's snuggles and remember how lucky B was to have you and how brave you've been to do the right, kindest thing, as hard as it was to face.

Val x

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 22:19

yes, we are already missing him, but reminising about all his antics, including unwrapping and eating an entire cake, and blwing up like a barrel.. he walked like jon wayne for 24 hours !

i don't thikn a new dog will be an option, our lifestyles are changing and i can't really imagine either of us being able to love another dog the same.

i do appreciate all the kind words

i had to laugh about him blowing up like a barrel. My dearly departed puppy got into his food cupboard once. I don't know how long he was eating the food for, but his belly must have doubled in size! He had the cheek to whimper for a few hours while farting really loudly!

Its really good to remember and share some good memories, it really helps you smile and remember the many good times you had together.

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 22:36

he was the biggest scavenger ever ! we've been through countless kitche bins, as he always worked out a way to either knock them over, get the lid off and eat the contents.

i found him stood on our table once , trying to find any trace of the roast dinner we'd just eaten he would do anything for food.

So sorry to hear about your dog lulu. We had to have our ancient collie x PTS in February as she'd started to go doolally (she bit DH which was totally, totally out of character
), so I know what it's like. Big hugs to you, and to your other dog.

kid · 01/06/2010 22:42

My puppy used to use the chairs to jump up on the table. We thought we were smart by pushing all the chairs in. But Moby soon figured out how to pull the chairs out and get up on the table.

He was also a scavanger. The worse thing he ever ate was the metal part of a razor blade. I hunted high and low for it just incase he hadn't eaten it. But when I took him out the next morning, I found it in his poo! So glad he wasn't hurt by it, sure gave me a heart attack though.

He also ate snail once, and scared the life out of me that time too because of lung worm.

God, we could right a book about our dogs antics!

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 22:47

thank you salty , i am sorry for your loss too.

kid, those are lovely memories! so much personality in those little furry bodies

mines best trip was loitering under the high chair.
oh and jumping on the kitcehn table whenever our back was turned.

Lulumaam · 01/06/2010 22:59

oh yes.. i never had to sweep up when weaning the DCs, the food never hit the floor !!

he once took a running jump and leapt through the air to snatch some toast out of my friend's hand !

bramblebooks · 01/06/2010 23:16

Lulumaam · 02/06/2010 15:35

thank you... today has not been too bad. S seems quite happy , like nothing has changed whether that will alter when PIL's dog has gone at the weekend is another thing entirely... x
