Puppy Attacked :(

EcoMouse · 27/04/2010 20:52

She was attacked by a friends SBT. This SBT can be dog-aggressive so was shut in front garden while friend visited. SBT broke around the fence, where fence meets hedge straight in back door and attacked sleeping puppy in basket. She's only 13 weeks old.

Got there in seconds but damage was done. Fingers crossed for her please . Second trip to vet tomorrow to check for muscle damage and progress, currently in near shock with serious wounds to leg.

Future of SBT uncertain.

Im so sorry this awful thing happened!

EcoMouse · 29/04/2010 21:35

Thanks bedlam, I can just about rationalise about amputation being an ok thing to happen but I'm gutted for the DC, they are finding all of this very difficult too. We waited a long time to get a pup, talked it all over so much and I'm sad for them that the reality has been and will continue to be so different to all of the hopes and excitement we shared.

Thank you for your kind words and understanding. I know things will become brighter over the next month or two but at the moment it's very hard for everyone.

to you and your family, Eco. I am so, so sorry.

As an ex vet nurse I can echo bedlam and say that dogs do really well on 3 legs, but of course this is a huge shock for you all and you must allow yourself to feel all the emotions you do right now. It sucks, tbh, that this has happened to your lovely little puppy. No two ways about it

daisydotandgertie · 29/04/2010 23:24

I am also so, so sorry for you all. What a terrible, heartbreaking thing to happen.

Is she insured? Have the vets suggested she go to a specialist vet hospital yet? I'd be pushing for a referral I think.

EcoMouse · 30/04/2010 06:49

Thanks all. Daisy, no insurance. I had her under a week when this happened and although I had attained the forms I hadn't had a chance to return.

The vet said she would need to see a specialist for any op on her leg due to allowances for growth, etc. He seemed to want to hold on to see if the splint did anything, he was concerned about operating raising the risk of infection getting into her bones (because of the necessary pinning/framing + bite wounds surrounding breaks) and seemed reluctant to refer because of this ...and cost.

I'm going to see if my vet can fit her in today. If she needs an op, she'll have it. Somehow!

Your friend will of course be footing the bill for this!

EcoMouse · 30/04/2010 07:05

My friend's paid everything so far Tigga but I'm taking over from here on in. At this point, treatment becomes 'optional' in a sense and I don't expect anyone else to cover bills into the thousands, which this will be.

Bedlam, sorry to hear one of yours is ill. I hope you have good news today.

how awful. poor pup and poor you.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/04/2010 10:40

((hugs)) hope your puppy is ok x

Bella32 · 30/04/2010 10:55

A shot in the dark, maybe, but if the other dog was insured would your pup's treatment be covered under the other dog's third party insurance?

thehillsarealive · 30/04/2010 11:02

that is a good idea bella - ecomouse, do ask your friend, if it is insured then there might be a third party clause, I know that our old boys insurance did have.

I am so sorry that this has happened and while I feel sorry for the SBT & your friend, I do feel if it could do this to a puppy who didnt show any signs of aggression then what about children?

big soppy licks from my boy to your pup and fingers crossed for you all.

The SBT wasn't insured either.

...and my car just broke down!

FGS

I'm feeling overwhelmed by everything.

I've spoken with my vet who is seeking the records to date from the other vet. The other vet is being more than a little slow in passing the information on but when my vet has had the opportunity to review, she will call and advise whether to go straight in or wait until tuesday.

Oh poor puppy and poor ecomouse and family

I know it's not the same but my little dog is deaf and she has a wonderful quality of life, I'm sure your puppy will get on just fine with three legs. Still terribly sad though.

MmeLindt · 30/04/2010 11:51

Oh, how awful.

Hope that your puppy is better soon. What is her name?

Does your friend have third party insurance for himself/his house? Our dog is covered through our house insurance.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 30/04/2010 12:00

Oh Eco, you poor thing I think as Korma says you have a civil case against your friend but obviously it's one thing having one and another thing doing it, very difficult position to be in. That said, I think your friend was incredibly negligent not having some kind of insurance with a dog aggressive dog.

This is a total long shot, but is there definitely no insurance provided from the breeder ? Some companies offer a few weeks free, did the breeder definitely not take out a free policy ?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 30/04/2010 12:02

I was wondering about the household insurance, glad Mme Lindt has mentioned it, definitely worth looking into that. Also do you have on your household insurance any legal cover or a legal helpline, they might be able to give some advice.

oxocube · 30/04/2010 13:33

How awful. Fingers crossed that your pup recovers soon

I have investigated every avenue suggested, many thanks for all of your input. Unfortunately, no luck.

But I had communication today with one of the most fantastic women, who works for one of the animal charities. She has conferred with my vet and has arranged (somehow and as if by magic) to cover all costs that I can't meet over the coming weeks to at least bring us to a point of clearer options for pup.

My pup has a Fairy Godmother!
Fingers and paw pads crossed please pup's back in tomorrow for a proper check over with my vet (who happens to have an orthopedic vet in house, who fortunately found another break, which the initial vet missed )

EcoMouse - sorry about your poor wee pup, but good news about future treatment!

EcoMouse · 30/04/2010 19:20

Bedlam, my friend has his own difficult choices to face regarding his dog. I'm sure many of us have been in a potential pts scenario regarding one of our pets and whatever the reason for that deliberation, it is never an easy one to face.

We'd possibly all like to think that if our dog became aggressive or attacked that we'd be able to pts without a second thought but I know that if my dog ever brought about that occurance, I would cuddle her as they injected and cry over what had gone wrong, where I'd gone wrong and for every good minute we'd shared together, regardless ... as well as for whoever had been hurt.

Tell me about life with a 'tripod'! Did yours have both front legs or both back?

Thanks hmc and everyone for your support and positive vibes (..."maaan"), it looks like you've truly worked wonders for pup!
