Pregnant cat, giving birth(?), bleeding, advice needed pls

I have a cat who was in season about 8/9wks ago. Tried to keep her in, she got out and spent all night out.

So it has become apparent she is pregnant. She saw vet a few weeks for someting else and she said she didn't think she was pregnant unless in the very early stages but that wouldn't add up as to when she was calling etc

So on Monday she started bleeding, partner took her to vets who then confirmed she is pregnant but not as far along as I thought and it looked as though she was/is probably having MC

So that night she stopped bleeding, has been fine in herself since, totally normal and have seen kitten movement in her belly.

Tonight the bleeding has started again.

So is it likely she is fine and it's the start of labour (do they bleed in labour first??) or is it likely she is mc'ing the kittens and what should I do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would take her to the vet asap.
My cats have had kittens and I don't recall any blood before they gave birth.

GreaterFence · 17/03/2010 19:05

When dp took her vet said she didn't need to be seen unless it looked like she was in distress and/or kitten was coming out and got stuck etc

She is fine in herself, she is currently sleeping in the bottom of my wardrobe. Nothing is different to how she was on Monday so we'd just be told the same thing again

It's just awful not knowing what I'm facing really.

does she usually sleep at the bottom of your wardrobe? my cat was very restless in the few hours leading up to birth and was searching for suitable places to give birth.
The other one gave birth overnight and showed no signs the day before (apart from being rather podgy!)

fruitshootsandheaves · 17/03/2010 19:15

from a quick search on the internet. Bleeding is not normal in pregnancy and could indicate she is miscarrying but then she could miscarry one or two and other kittens could be fine.
I really would contact your vet again just to be sure. It's not normal for them to bleed.

thirtysomething · 17/03/2010 19:21

no advice but bumping in case Bella is around - she's very knowledgeable on pet threads. Hope your cat is okay.

GreaterFence · 17/03/2010 19:22

She's never been in my wardrobe before!

Rang vet again and they said same thing

Just have to keep and eye on her and see what happens.

Didn't realise they could still keep some kittens though. Fingers crossed that they are all ok but if not then there still could be hope for one/some.

Has the vet given you any information about the birthing process, or have you researched it yourself? I know it's come a bit out of the blue but I'm hoping you did some research so you can help her if things go wrong? If not, this site has a bit of helpful information, as does this site and alsothis one. The internet isn't the best place to learn these things but it's definitely better than nothing.

And I must stress, if you think she is in trouble, call the vet and tell them they need to come out and help you, or take her in - don't ask them. You're paying for their service, and you're the one that can see what's going on - you don't want to risk her life or the life of the kittens because the vet doesn't seem too bothered, it's better to be safe than sorry

Thanks thirty

Mrs - I have helped a previous cat of mine whilst she was giving birth, unfortunately that was a loooong time ago, I was only 15!

Will take a look at those sites now, thank you. And I will definately be ringing the emergency number they gave me if anything happens.

Cat seems ok at the moment. Bleeding seems to have stopped again and she is now sleeping next to me. She has been down to eat and drink too.

Still hoping for the best.

is she larger now? if she was in season 8/9 weeks ago then she should be due about now, the average length of pregnancy is 65 days give or take 4 days.

Apparently their nipples get pink about 21 days after mating: this is a clear sign that you can use if you don?t know the exact date of mating.

MrsL123 · 17/03/2010 21:00

Just now I would prepare a nest for her somewhere quiet - if she's already chosen the bottom of your wardrobe, it would be best to do it there to avoid stressing her out, but you could find somewhere else dark and cosy for her if the wardrobe isn't suitable. I'd also move her food and water bowls and litter tray near to the nest, and get anything else you might need together so it's all to hand when labour starts. Even if it's not tonight, at least you'll have it ready when the time comes. Hopefully she'll get through it all with no help required, but it's good to be prepared.

Looking forward to updates - feeling very kitten broody myself at the moment!

GreaterFence · 17/03/2010 22:15

I worked it out that she would be due yesterday but my earlier trip to the vets said otherwise, that's why I am so confused. She said cat wasn't pregnant then. Unless she was, but vet got it wrong.

Bed made for her in wardrobe. She seems ok now, is washing herself a lot and just checked and she is producng a small amount of milk if you squeeze gently which I thought didn't happen until they were due anyway, so hopefully I am right and she is due and not mc'ing. She is definately very roundy in the tummy department as of the last few weeks!

Only time will tell. I'll update when something happens.

Thanks for all the help

How are things going, GreaterFence ? Hope all is well

Lizcat · 18/03/2010 13:06

The advice I always give clients is that clear, and green discharges are normal. Dark Green, black, brown or fresh blood are not normal and should always have an examination by a vet.
Plus this on off thing you are having is not normal. Cats usually go in to labour and deliver their kittens over about a 6 hour period.

GreaterFence · 18/03/2010 13:19

Well no bleeding since last night, she is ok in herself, still eating, drinking and going to the toilet etc.

Lizcat would you advise seeing a different vet then??

TulipsInTheRain · 18/03/2010 13:32

My cat had a bit of bleeding during labour alright but it was very soon before giving birth.

Is there any chance she could have had the kittens already but not have bonded and abandoned them? Cats get lochia after birth just like we do and a cat who's bleeding and producing milk but the vet thinks isn't pregnant would suggest to me she's already had the kittens

I hope not but it is a bit worrying that she's been bleeding for so long with no signs of labour.

GreaterFence · 18/03/2010 13:34

She is very definately still pregnant. Can see/feel kittens.

Think I'm off to find a new vet.

TulipsInTheRain · 18/03/2010 13:49

Ah missed that, well that's good at least.

can you feel movement from them? Is she going to the litter box more than normal? Is she behaving oddly... more affectionate than usual, excessive purring, restless?

differant vet sounds like the best option alright, good luck

GreaterFence · 18/03/2010 13:52

There is definate movement too

She is quite restless, doesn't really know what to do with herself, keeps meowing at me.

I have an appointment with different vet at 5.40pm today. Will be back to update.

Thank you for the advice.

Looking forward to update Hope all goes well for you and catty.

TulipsInTheRain · 18/03/2010 14:13

Restlessness is usually a sign that something is happening or is about to happen.

hopefully she's just the cat equivalant of a slow birther and she'll get on with it in her own time but always best to check these things out.

I'd suggest putting her in the room she's made the nest in, putting down some water for her, closing the binds and leaving her pretty much alone. Just check on her every 15 mins or so. Some cats seem to need privacy to get on with things. (others will chose to give birth in bizarrely crowded places... there's no predicting it!)

TulipsInTheRain · 18/03/2010 18:41

How did the vets go?

GreaterFence · 18/03/2010 22:14

Right 5mins of peace to update....

Vet looked her over took temp etc, said cat is fine in herself nothing really wrong with her.

Said yes still definately pregnant and kitten movement felt. Basically the bleeding isn't "normal" but there isn't anything she can really do as there isn't anything to treat IFKWIM??

Other than section her but it might be too early, so she has given a shot of AB's to ward off any infections and a course of tablets. Now just wait and see what happens.

If she bleeds more then ring back, if still no kittens in next 5days then take her back.

So noting much has changed but I'm glad she's been checked over

TulipsInTheRain · 19/03/2010 10:34

Sounds like this vet was way more on the ball compared to the last one at least... nothing worse than being fobbed off by a vet who doesn't care when you're worried about your pet.

Sending lots of kitteny vibes to your puss and good luck.... kittens are bags of fun, only problem is you'll fall in love and want to keep them all

GreaterFence · 20/03/2010 13:01

Quick update - cat bleeding again this morning so another trip to vets, they are now sectioning her so should hear from them in a couple of hours, could only feel one kitten moving this morning though

Fingers crossed at least one is ok and poor mummy too.
