MrsL's disaster zone puppy strikes again!

MrsL123 · 12/03/2010 17:16

At this rate I'll be taking out a second job just to pay my vets bills! She split one of her back nails on Sunday which needed a trip to the emergency vet, but she was still no better after 5 days of antibiotics so we took her to our own vet this morning. Turns out it had gone septic so they had to keep her in and put her under to remove it

They had to cut it right back the nail bed and cauterise the wound, and she's got a big pink bandage on her leg. She's crying all time time so it must be hurting her, and she's feeling very sorry for herself! She's to be crated again and no walks for at least a week, just when she was getting back to normal after her elbow operation. Two steps forward, five steps back!

Poor little girl

Oh poor thing, she does look sorry for herself.
Must be hard to crate a puppy all the time, when they don't understand why.

A friends Lab has just finished 2 months in crate after being hit by a car, that was one very unhappy pup

SlubberFailedAtLent · 12/03/2010 18:09

Oh no MrsL, poor puppy. She does look very sorry for herself in that photo (isn't she gorgeous though).

Her pink plaster doesn't look at all like a bandaged enormo bendy willy. AT ALL.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 12/03/2010 18:12

Oh bless her - poor puppy. I'm sending virtual hugs and pats for her, and Coco would send her a Bonio to cheer her up, if she could get it in the envelope without eating it herself.

She will nibble a get well card later, perhaps!

MrsL123 · 12/03/2010 19:07

Oh dear, it does look like a big bendy willy Good job she won't be going out in public for a while!

She's just managed to eat a whole pedigree jumbone without whining once - I think she may be faking the pain to get sympathy (and jumbones, obviously)! And DH has just taken the other dog out for a walk so she's now sat at the front door howling like a wolf - think I'll need an industrial size box of paracetamol if this carries on for another week!

SlubberFailedAtLent · 12/03/2010 19:49

jumbones sound good (what are jumbones btw)

Jumbones plus Crufts on the telly for ultimate dog chill out.

SlubberFailedAtLent · 12/03/2010 20:18

scrap that.

watching the all the dog agility and those eukanuba ads would be too cruel.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 12/03/2010 22:37

I have just shown dh your puppy's picture and he says she is utterly gorgeous and has a lovely, shiny coat.

He doesn't say I have a lovely shiny coat - and ddog is getting jealous too!!

MrsL123 · 13/03/2010 09:55

lol SDTG, she does tend to have that effect on men!

She was a nightmare last night, had me up every couple of hours to go out, and spent the rest of the night whining. Gave her some painkillers with her breakfast and she's now running about like a three-legged tazmanian devil

Slubber, a pedigree jumbone is a big chewy bone thing with a meaty middle. Smells disgusting, gets stuck all over their paws, but tastes lovely and has magical painkilling powers apparently!

I just love the advert!

OP posts:
StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 13/03/2010 10:44

Oh yes - our pup got a jumbone for christmas purely on the strength of that advert, MrsL - I think it's hilarious!!

Sorry to hear that you and she had a bad night - I hope she's on the mend soon and you get some sleep tonight.

notjustapuppymum · 13/03/2010 20:18

MrsL sorry to hear about your pup :-(

One of my retrievers has just done the same thing to a front paw claw. Went to the vets last night and have got antibiotics for a few days to see how that goes but knowing my dogs it will end up in surgery the same as yours (we have a terrible track record with the vets!)....my goldie is a big, big wimp so dreading it.

Why does she have to be crated again? Mine have never been crated so just curious as to if this might be necessary if he has the op.

SlubberFailedAtLent · 13/03/2010 20:43

Sorry to hear you both had a bad night.

LOL @ the jumbone ad

MmeLindt · 13/03/2010 20:51

Poor pup, but she is absolutely gorgeous. Her coat is very glossy. What is her name?

Hope she gets better soon.

Love the ad.

Romanarama · 13/03/2010 21:03

What a beautiful shiny dog! (Except the giant willy bit of course, pmsl)

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/03/2010 01:31

Poor pup and poor your purse lol

she is a sweetie and woofa sends his love to her and says his lipstick looks like her bandage.........

thehillsarealive · 14/03/2010 15:46

mrsL - poor thing, she looks so fed up. i feel your pain at her crying and whining and being crated.

eek to your purse, vets fees are the worst - even more expensive than the dentist!

lots of snuggles for the pup

Romanarama · 14/03/2010 18:21

MrsL I am just back from having an embedded twig removed from pup's a-hole Poor love. 5 days antibiotics. Another 150 euros down. How the blooming heck am I supposed to make sure he never eats a twig?!

MrsL123 · 14/03/2010 18:50

The big pink willy bandage is no more! She pulled it off yesterday when I left her unsupervised for all of five minutes to feed the rabbits. She actually managed to pull it off in one piece, and then dropped it at my feet when I came back in, very pleased with herself! Don't know how she managed it, it was really tight and it had a sports sock taped over it - she didn't even rip it! I redressed it with the fetching green stuff, and that lasted until about 10pm last night. The bandage I put on after that lasted until this morning. And the bandage I put on after that lasted until lunch time. So I've given up and she's now wearing one of my brand new (expensive!) padded wool walking socks instead, which she seems very happy with! I've secured it with tape in two places and folded the top of the sock over to stop her getting at it and then taped that in place, so hopefully it'll stay on until she goes back to the vet tomorrow night.

Mmelindt, her name is holly - I made the mistake of letting DH name her and have no idea why he chose that name, she wasn't even born at christmas. And we have a cat called molly, so as you can imagine, there is always some confusion!

Notjustapuppymum, she only has to be crated while we're out, otherwise she does bum tuck runs around the kitchen, jumps up at the worktops and generally does everything except take it easy! She had to be crated after her last operation because it was quite a big one and she wasn't allowed to move around at all, and it was a nightmare because she'd never been crated before. But seven weeks on she's quite used to it, she just goes straight to her crate when she sees our coats going on!

Romanarama, your poor puppy Sounds very sore

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 14/03/2010 19:27

pmsl at holly wearing your brand new walking socks-and padded ones at that

and a dog ate/chewed a stick and it got caught coming out of his bum when pooing?

notjustapuppymum · 14/03/2010 20:01

Oh MrsL she sounds as mischievous as my two with pulling bandages off etc. I seriously hope mine doesn't have to have this done as there is no way the bandage will stay on more than 5 mins, if he doesn't pull it off himself then his brother will help him out... :-)

It was £100 just for the vet to check him out the other night, give him antibiotics, painkiller and a buster collar so goodness knows what the surgery will be - thank god for insurance!

Romanarama · 14/03/2010 20:25

Pretty much. A bit of stick had got sort of embedded in the skin so it was inflamed. Must have been agony.

MrsL123 · 14/03/2010 20:59

Notjustapuppymum it cost us about £100 last sunday at the emergency vet (£70 of which was a consultation fee!). Still no idea what friday cost, got to pay tomorrow night. Hopefully it won't be too much, our vet is quite good at keeping the cost to a minimum, probably because we're in there so often! At first she'd planned to give her a local anaesthetic and quickly cut the nail off while we waited, but then she saw it was infected so she had to put her under to clean it up properly and take the nail back even further, so of course that costs more money. Just our luck really, we'd been so careful to keep it clean and she had antibiotics, but it was split right up to the nail bed so we were fighting a losing battle. The vet said it would have been better to just take it off on sunday, so I don't think she's too impressed with the advice the emergency vet gave us. I wish they'd start doing sundays themselves - they offer a 24 hour service six days a week, but sundays are done on a rota basis with other vet practices in the area so you don't know where it is until you call up - and mine always seem to get injured on a sunday!

Hopefully your boy will get better with the antibiotics and it won't get infected - but at least he can wear a collar - holly can't have one because her neck is wider than her head, and she just pulls it off!

Romanarama, the thought of your poor pup makes me squirm in my seat, it must have been so painful for her

OP posts:
notjustapuppymum · 15/03/2010 20:30

Well MrsL we've been back to the vet today...was walking him earlier when he started to limp so checked his paw and the claw had completely split in two and one bit was hanging off.

The vet clipped it right back and pulled off the hanging bit and it has left the quick exposed and very very slightly exposed the nail bed also.

She said the infection is clearing though which is good news. So now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that it starts to heal up and grow back. Got a check up on Thursday and she will decide then whether to leave it and see how it goes or whether to rip the whole claw out.

Hope your girl is doing ok.

MrsL123 · 15/03/2010 21:01

Notjust we took ours back today as well, and we paid for friday which was only £70. Less than the emergency vet charged us for five minutes of bad advice! Don't think I'll bother claiming on the insurance though, our excess is £120 so I'd only get £50 back. And I'm sure they're going to refuse to renew my policy as it is, so I don't want to push my luck! We didn't even make it into the consultation room tonight, they told us we were seeing someone else because our vet wasn't available, but she came back in while we were in the waiting room and had a look at it there. She was really pleased with it, she said it had healed up fine and she doesn't need another bandage on it. So she cancelled our appointment with the other vet, which saved us a bit of money!

It was very sad though, turns out she'd been called out to put a dog to sleep, and it was a dog we know DH and the vet walk the same route every morning with a few other dogs, including this poor old boy. DH only saw him this morning and said he seemed fine, but he's been a bit grumpy on his walks lately and not himself. The vet said they just decided tonight that it was time, so they called her and she went straight there and put him to sleep at home. She looked really upset, I think it must be awful when it's a dog you've known for a long time. She had him in the boot of her car and was just waiting for everyone to leave so she could bring him in

notjustapuppymum · 16/03/2010 17:49

Hi MrsL, that's really sad :-(

We were in the waiting room once with another goldie who was awaiting the same fate. He was having a good nuzzle with one of mine, it was so sad.

Wow your excess is high!! Ours is £75 and we've claimed well over £2000 in the last few years between our two. They haven't had a problem renewing it thus far but we can't change insurance companies, noone else wants to know as soon as I start reeling off their medical history

I am finding comfort in knowing that your pup is as accident prone as mine though
