Any top tips for getting dog hair out of the stair carpet?

Any cool gadgets or vacuum cleaner recommendations? My red stair carpet has a white 'mohair' veil.

I spose the bottom of a trainer would be the same as one of those rubber sweepers you can buy - I looked in the petshop, but didn't want to waste 12.99 on something pointless. Glad I didn't now - will keep working with the cat brush and give the trainer a go too (if I can find a trainer that's not caked in mud)

Sellotape is also really good at dealing with this. Though my house has been much freer of cat hair (cream british shorthair) since I invested in an animal dyson.

Romanarama · 28/02/2010 11:25

I may get an animal dyson - do you think that's the best one? My bagless vacuum cleaner seems to have lost a lot of its suck power and I can't work out why. I may keep the old one just for vacuuming the dog - which he quite likes for some reason - and get another one for the floor.

I was going to say the sole of a trainer!

Grandhighpoohba · 28/02/2010 12:39

Rubbing with disposable latex glove - works a wonder for getting cat hair off curtains anyway.

Sallypuss · 28/02/2010 12:47

damp rubber glove (worn on your hand of course )

I use a Furminator on areas that can stand a bit of metal brushing - and get through at least one hoover bag a week on my Miele Cat & Dog. Am tempted to get a Dyson Animal next time for that reason alone, although in general the Miele reviews are better.

Romanarama · 28/02/2010 13:20

Is a furminator a good buy in general? My pup is a goldie and sheds massively.

wildfig - don't get a Dyson I replaced my Miele with a Dyson and regretted it.

I now have a Henry but will be trying the cat brush tip - thanks

MrsL123 · 28/02/2010 13:28

I love the furminator, you really do get carrier bags full of hair off them (and mine are shorthaired!) and they love it, ours go mad for it. I'm banned from using mine though, after a rather enthusiastic session left one of the cats a bit, erm, sparse over her spine! She was lying on her side enjoying it so much that I just kept running it down her back (with her purring like a nutter) and didn't roll her over to check the progress - of course it only removes the soft undercoat and leaves the top hairs intact, so she looked like she had a combover for weeks

tulpe · 28/02/2010 13:29

We have a Miele Cat & Dog. Tis totally brilliant. Ruby doesn't shed much at all but my allegedly "short haired" cats leave bundles of fur everywhere!

Dysons are not particularly great, imo. We had one which was knackered after 3 months. You could go over and over the same bit of fluff and it still wouldn't pick up

Romanarama · 28/02/2010 13:34

I've only had one dyson and it self-combusted when not very old. I thought it was a bit of a waste of money. But it was a long time ago now. I really don't want anything with a bag though - sounds like a faff.

My Henry has a special, reusable, zipped bag.

Tis true.

MrsL123 · 28/02/2010 13:49

Bella is his hose long enough?

Romanarama · 28/02/2010 13:51

That's clever - can you get one for all different vacuums?

wildfig · 28/02/2010 15:04

Good, I can cross Dysons off my list of 'things that everyone else says are great but are too expensive to impulse buy'. Would anyone like to unrecommend Creme de la Mer and Sorrell snowboots so I can cross that off too?

Furminators are definitely worth it. I've got short-haired dogs too, but I could stuff cushions with the hairs that come off them - giving them a Furminate when the shedding season starts really takes the strain off my hoover. And they love it.

Romanarama · 28/02/2010 15:14

CdlM is a total waste of money. Same ingredients as Nivea. Don't know about Sorrell.

(Don't forget to put the hair outside for nesting birdies to use)

Henry with an airo-brush attachment - best thing I have ever encountered!

Romanarama · 28/02/2010 16:36

Where does one buy a Henry? Have never seen one.

Would I need a Henry Hound, or just a henry?
