this pm my cat brought me a present. a new born mouse. it is tiny beyond belief, its eyes are still sealed shut! my dh thinks im mad! he thinks i should just let nature do its thing - ie cat eat mouse! my mum thinks kindest thing to do would be to put it out of its misery (but she said she couldnt do it herself either!). i cant leave it to the mercy (HA!) of my cat, cant throw it back into the field knowing its going to die either. i am stupidly upset over this little baby! i have it in a little box with some shredded tissue and i have an absorbant cloth which i am soaking with milk and offering it every half hour - will have to set my mobile to wake me up every half hour all night to continue this!! dont really have a clue what im doing! am i doing something wrong, is milk the best thing? does it need water? has anyone hand reared a mouse? what are its chances of survival? if (big if) it does survive - what do i do with it? after being hand reared would it survive if i put it back in the field?

maybe its cos im broody but i cant have any more babies, but i feel so protective of this little mite! i want it to live!!!!!!

please post on this, even if its to tell me im a big daft softie!!!!!!!!!

Peep's a lovely name.

Glad your keeping it. I hope she's going to make it. You'll have to try her with some rodent chocolate drops in a few weeks

fastasleep · 16/07/2005 22:07

Aww peep how cute! So glad she survived the night and awwww @ her thinking you're mummy! Keep updating!

paolosgirl · 16/07/2005 22:11

Aww...this thread is lovely!! Keep us all posted with news on Peep

pinkmagic1 · 16/07/2005 22:16

I hand reared 2 baby rabbits when thier mother died. I used a special formula milk for puppies and kittens that I got from the pet shop fed through a syringe and they both made it. Good luck.

hi! Peep it is! expect pic on monday! she is not doing too well, sadly. i think the wound is causing trouble, she is not very interested in feeding - i am having trouble getting her to take more than a drop. she now has the puncture mark and a big mottled bruise over her side and to her tummy. i am going to take her to the vet on monday. i have also emailed that wildlife trust that was linked below for advice, but they havent got back to me yet.

i let dh hold her yesterday and she peeped, when i took her she stopped, so she definatly knows me!

Awww I hope you can get her fixed up, I hope it's not internal bleeding or anything... best of luck at the vets!

Nbg · 17/07/2005 20:39

Oh poor thing. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. I hope she pulls through.

hunkermunker · 17/07/2005 20:42

Oh dear - hope Peep is OK

MrsBubsDeVere · 18/07/2005 12:03

How is she?

Lucycat · 18/07/2005 12:28

Any news on Peep today?

Mytwopenceworth · 18/07/2005 16:57

so sad to tell everyone who has been following that Peep didn't make it. she died in my hands that night. i think her injury was more severe than i thought. i really thought she was going to make it. i am really upset about it, daft sod that i am. i have buried her under the clematis (is that how you spell it?). feeling quite low about it really, im a soppy sod and i got really fond of her.

You did fantastic with her and like the others say, she died knowing that she was safe and loved. don't really know what else to say to make you feel better

{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}

hunkermunker · 18/07/2005 17:18

Oh, sweetheart, I'm so sorry.

Listen though - she was well looked after and when she died, she was with somebody who had kept her warm and fed her and loved her. No creature can wish for more, so don't upset yourself - I know how sad it is to lose a little creature like that (we had a very sick hamster and I was stupidly upset when she died - she was only a baby too).

Can you get yourself a mouse as a pet? Or a hamster? We have had three winter whites and two roborovskis (have just lost our last one ).

Lucycat · 18/07/2005 17:49

oh I'm so sorry, you did a great job. You'll have great karma now...........

Nbg · 18/07/2005 18:27

Oh so sorry M2PW

For what it's worth though you did a really great job with her.
I think HM's idea is great.

fastasleep · 18/07/2005 18:49

Oh no! How sad poor little peep, poor you! You did very well looking after her... it probably was internal bleeding after all... at least she thought you were mummy and she died having a hug! (Yes I just saw hunker said that already!)

paolosgirl · 18/07/2005 19:47

Oh no . Poor Peep . You did so well looking after her. Hugs to you...

Mytwopenceworth · 18/07/2005 20:18

i used to have rats (intentionally i mean - not the my house is filthy kind!!), but had to rehome them cos the cats and the kids wouldnt leave them alone, plus i didnt feel i had enough time, so i wouldnt go out and get one, but when Peep arrived via the cat, i got attached to her and i would have kept her.

dh wont let me have another baby OR another cat, so i doubt he'd even go for a mouse!!! - although he did give me big hugs when Peep died and said "i know how much you wanted it (IT?!!) to live" and made me a cuppa!

youre a lovely lot, you know?!
