this pm my cat brought me a present. a new born mouse. it is tiny beyond belief, its eyes are still sealed shut! my dh thinks im mad! he thinks i should just let nature do its thing - ie cat eat mouse! my mum thinks kindest thing to do would be to put it out of its misery (but she said she couldnt do it herself either!). i cant leave it to the mercy (HA!) of my cat, cant throw it back into the field knowing its going to die either. i am stupidly upset over this little baby! i have it in a little box with some shredded tissue and i have an absorbant cloth which i am soaking with milk and offering it every half hour - will have to set my mobile to wake me up every half hour all night to continue this!! dont really have a clue what im doing! am i doing something wrong, is milk the best thing? does it need water? has anyone hand reared a mouse? what are its chances of survival? if (big if) it does survive - what do i do with it? after being hand reared would it survive if i put it back in the field?

maybe its cos im broody but i cant have any more babies, but i feel so protective of this little mite! i want it to live!!!!!!

please post on this, even if its to tell me im a big daft softie!!!!!!!!!

Yay!!! I'm glad to hear she made it through.

kcemum · 15/07/2005 14:37

Arrh, bless. This is a really sweet thread, It's made me go all gooey

fastasleep · 15/07/2005 14:39

Aww you are the sweetest person! I did this for a baby bird once the bird was attacked horribly by my cat and I sprayed iodene on her and fed her every few hours (I was only 11 lol)... when I left home there was still a bird with a scar on her chest that 'lived' in our garden

I really hope the poor little thing pulls through!

fastasleep · 15/07/2005 14:44

(I want updates! I'll be back later to check now lol)

Aww so glad to see it's doing well. If you have a look at this there is a contact us link at the top of the page. Might be worth seeing if you can give them a ring - apart from anything if he does well and grows and you put him back in the garden the cat will probably bring him back in!!

Janh · 15/07/2005 19:12

That's incredible, My2p, so glad you got her through the night

If she's pink with grey bits then she's going to be black and white (I think) so a pet, not wild - wonder where she came from?

swiperfox · 15/07/2005 20:02

That's what i thought as well janh - definately black and white.

Bless!!! Although our little mouse in the garden is grey with a white belly so could be that? Where are the patches m2pw?

hunkermunker · 15/07/2005 20:08

I thought of you this morning, M2PW - I thought how easy us human mothers had it compared to mouse mothers - imagine half-hourly feeds and having to lick our babies to make them poo!

Glad the little one made it through the night - hope you're not too sleepy! Good luck

fastasleep · 15/07/2005 20:09

hunkermunker you'll always be my favourite mouse

Nbg · 15/07/2005 20:12

YEY!

I'm so glad she's ok! You are a star!

I forgot to add with the info last night that it said if there were any cuts or injuries to get them treated with AB from the vet.
Don't know if you'd want to fork out for medication though.

hunkermunker · 15/07/2005 22:21

FA, but I'm a baaaaad mouse...

Mytwopenceworth · 15/07/2005 22:46

soooooooooo tired!!!

swiper - thanks

janh - dont think she can be a pet, to the rear of our house there is a meadow, and our cats are forever bringing in mice thru the window that opens onto the meadow. i assumed this one came from there as well - but shes the only one still alive! this morning there was an adult and 2 young ones dead in the garden. to answer your Q, her head is grey and the grey extends down her back. turn her over and there is no hair on her tum - its pinky/grey and wrinkled! shes got little pinkie hands and wrinkly bare arms and legs. -there is a little dark dot on the umbilical whatsit, so i assumed shes very young and the dot is that its not healed? her eyes are still shut. its not that shes patchy, but its like her fur isnt there yet all over, if you see what i mean. shes very cute and she made it this far!!
am i being daft cos i think she thinks im mum? she makes a 'peep' sort of noise at me! - i think its 'oy woman, feed me' !!

if she makes it, when shes weaned im going to take her well up into the dales and let her go in a field VERY far from my cats. (knowing how soft in the head i am, i'll probably end up going back to that field every week to tip out a bag of seeds and stuff!!!!!)

going off to give her food again, then straight to bed for hour in coma before mobile alert goes off!!!!

unless im now boring you all to tears, i will let you know how she gets on! may even post a piccie if i can find my camera!!!!

Awww MTPW, you are such a sweetie! I remember doing this for a sparrow who's wings were broken, but it didnt last the night.

Please post a pic!!!

You have to keep her when she's weaned! You'll be devastated to loose your baby otherwise! Get her a huge cage, and be her mummy til she's old!!!

charliecat · 16/07/2005 12:53

Awwwwwwww well done you

Janh · 16/07/2005 13:02

Oh you can't let her loose in a field, poor little mite, she'd just sit there quivering wondering where her mummy went

Sorry, you'll have to keep her

hunkermunker · 16/07/2005 13:07

JanH is right -poor mousey wondering where Mummy is

You'll have to keep her

You can call her Peep

Mytwopenceworth · 16/07/2005 19:03

you know - you guys are right! i shall be a nervous wreck worrying if shes safe! -between you me and the gatepost - i suspect she'll be staying!!

my dad said today that she wont know how to be a wild mouse and she'd die if i tried to 'set her free'.

plus, she REALLY does think im mummy!!!

i have found my camera, now i have to buy bateries on monday and i shall post a pic - you may have to help me do it!!

so - a vote for Peep. any other suggestions or shall i go with Peep? (which is cute btw!!)

M2PW, you're a love, you really are

WideWebWitch · 16/07/2005 19:13

I am hard old hag who doesn't care about animals at all but even I am moved by the plight of the mouse!

Janh · 16/07/2005 19:14

Oh, Peep is perfect!

hunker is dead right, you are lovely, and I think you should change your name to Peepsmum!

Janh · 16/07/2005 19:35
