Dog foods, can I run through a few?

Not literally that would be gross

I want to get my pugs onto a complete dry food and so went to our large pet shop tody to have a look.

I'm looking to get the 15kg bags as there are 2 of them (the KKCS) is still on puppy food.

The higher end 15 kg bags seemed tobe around £50,proplan adult, james wellbeloved, science plan.

Thenthere was Bakers adult at about £30 (but is on special offer at £20 at the moment)

Purina was £27

and finallyJolleys own at £23.

The science plan was also on offer down to £40 from £50 but I have to think what it will be in the long run rather than just this month IYKWIM.

I read that if the first ingredient is meat then we are off to a good start, i found it surprising that the jolleys brand was chicken first at 26% and that eukenuba which is double the price is the same at just 2% more (28%)

Just looking for advice on what I should go for really, I have no qualms at getting the top end ones but if the £20 less ones are as good then I'm happy with that.

Also are these foods complete, do you need to add anything else or just measure this out morning noon and night?

My pugs like to have chicken, carrots and rice in the evening can I add ths to the dry food, I don't want them getting fat!

Thankyou

Another vote for Burns here. Was fantastic with my Dalmatians, one of which had allergies.

iggypiggy · 24/02/2010 11:41

bella have just realised you may have meant Naturediet by ND - and not natural diet

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 11:45

Yes, iggy. Although I can see I may well go au naturel in time

Talk me through a typical BARF meal, please?

iggypiggy · 24/02/2010 11:52

ok

everyone does it differently tho, and variety is the key - al balanced diet over time

So - my 30 kg lab needs approx 900g meat per day. I give him something like 5 x chicken wings (approx 100g each) in the morning - or lamb meaty bones (ribs/ shanks etc.)

Then for dinner he has approx 500g (or just under) meat minced or cubed (sometimes with bits of bone, sometimes not) - sometimes combined with offal (last night he had steak an kidney as he is spoilt ) and I sometimes add a raw egg, some cottage cheese or some bio yoghurt. He also gets pureed veg a couple of times per week mixed in with the meat. And I often add some extra virgin olive oil. He gets Glucosamine & Chondroitin supplement for his joints, plus sea kelp.

He does get alot of variety tho - and he also gets leftovers as and when there are any (he had fish pie leftovers last week) - which aren't strictly BARF..

Others will do this differently tho.

I occasionally feed chicken wings too and raw meaty bones.
The dogs love it but for us it is not sustainable due to storage issues just now...

thesteelfairy2 · 24/02/2010 12:01

James Wellbeloved

This is the best imvho. My minauture schnauzer loves it. I get the one for older dogs as he is 8 years old.

About once a week though I cook some brown rice, chicken breast, diced carrots and peas in chicken stock for a treat. Usually make enough for two nights. That is his favourite.

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 12:05

Thnks for that, iggy. You've made my tummy rumble - lucky dog

Will go have a think/check out my freezer space. Just gotta make sure I have enough room for my Haagen Dazs

iggypiggy · 24/02/2010 12:21

Bella the steak and kidney was raw tho...

I should have added that everything except the leftovers is raw..

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 12:25

It's okay, honey - I know. I just get really hungry by this time of day

Will give you a nod and a secret handshake if I decide to do BARF. Don't want MrsL calling me a DOG FOOD TART

iggypiggy · 24/02/2010 12:29

ND is good stuff tho - is what I feed mine if I really have to give him comercial food - eg. if am leaving him with someone else overnight etc.

This site quite useful I think: landywoods

Dunno why - but I thought you might think he had steak and kidney pie last night

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 12:41

You feed ND if you're slumming it, that's what you mean

I called Landywoods a couple of weeks ago but was told they're not taking on any new customers until the end of the month

I need instant gratification with my dog food!

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 12:47

Actually, I need instant gratification from my dog food sounds a lot better doesn't it?

Instant gratification ^with6 my dog food could be misinterpreted

But then, so could from my dog food

Oh feck, MrsL - your smuttiness is contagious

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 12:53

Well bella, I didn't want to be called a dog food tart either, but sometime the truth just hurts

My ND wall is estimated for delivery between 2.46 and 3.46pm this afternoon. Rather specific with the .46 I must say! And unfortunately as I'm terribly busy this afternoon (I have lots of biscuits to eat a client coming in, honest...), DH will have to load it all into the car himself and take it home. Pity

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 12:55

Does 'have a client coming in' make me sound like a high-class call girl? I'm not. But life insurance doesn't really sound as glamorous, does it?

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 13:00

Poor Mr L.

Do you think he'll manage?

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 13:08

Is your client coming in to discuss his annuity or his projected lump sum, MrsL

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 13:08

He probably won't be talking to me tonight. He is getting his own back though, he says he has to 'work late' tonight (code for hide in the shop and play computer games), so I'll have to erect the ND wall on my own

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 13:10

I believe he wants to trust his unit to me as well bella

I'm pretty sure I heard him correctly...

GothDetective · 24/02/2010 13:11

My dog eats "Country Valu" chicken flavour dry food. Costs £11 for a 15kg bag.

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 13:13

Not an open ended investment company ?

And Mr L doesn't want to do the erection?

I can see why you're on the game.

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 13:15

Mr L isn't too good at erecting stuff, he'll admit so himself lol

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 13:17

Aw.

Do the blue pills not work then?

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 13:26

Can't say I fancy him enough to bother trying them bella

Bella32 · 24/02/2010 13:36

But I thought you said he was a Chippendale?

Or did you mean this?

MrsL123 · 24/02/2010 15:29

Bella if only he was aging as well as that chair

The dog food has arrived! I got a phone call off MrL about 15 minutes ago with a few choice words about how much there is. He says the boxes are piled 6 foot high in his tiny little shop and nobody will be able to get through the door. Not sure what his problem is, surely people can buy jewellery from the pavement, no? His card machine has bluetooth, afterall. Me thinks he is overreacting
