4 month old puppy has diarear (sp) whats best to do

My 4 month old springer spaniel has had diarear. It start yesterday afternoon, and still still has it now.

I have not changed her dog food or anything, but she does tend to eat everything and anything she finds on the floor, while we can stop this at home litter and stuff on the street is a little harder.

She is eating and drinking well and is totally fine in herself apart from diarear, she had me up int he night whining which she has not done before so she could go out.

I happy to take her to the vet if needed, but dont want to take her if this is something thats likely to clear up.

Asking for advice, many thanks

Starve her for 24 hours (still give plenty of water) and then try her on plain boiled chicken and brown rice for the next few days until she's firmed up a bit. If she's still no better by Tuesday morning, I would take her to the vet (we usually work on a 3 day rule ourselves).

HTH

Sorry forgot to add, the vet loves it if you can take a sample of the poo (sorry!) in a clean tuppawear box of something - just a couple of spoonfuls will do. Saves time, as they can test it straight away, rather than asking you going back with a sample. Just don't get it mixed up with your lunch

MrsL123 · 24/01/2010 13:46

Oh and if it is very watery or has even the slightest bit of blood or mucus, take her to the vet straight away. But if it's just normal 'melted ice cream' style poo, you can try the chicken and rice, as it's probably something she's eaten.

Wish you could edit your posts on here to add stuff you forget, would be so much easier!

MrsL's advice is good - assuming she is vaccinated, is drinking well and is fine in herself then starve her and try plain food for a couple of days.

The puppy that is!

Any worries, call your vet for a quick chat.

bouncymumof2 · 24/01/2010 14:01

many thanks for that.

Its it mostly the melted ice-cream only a little watery at the end.

Will do as suggested.

Many thanks

Very helpful x

lol @ bella, I could do with being starved for a while actually!

I became an expert poo-spooner last year. Ahhh the joys of having a dog with colitis!

My pup had something very similar. I took him to the vet as he was also sick once and it was a friday and I didn't want to leave him over the weekend.

Vet said pups often pick bugs up. As Alfie had a temperature and a gurgly tummy he had medication but basically the same advice as you have had here. As long as he was alert don't over worry. He did say white fish (no skin or bone) and rice is better than chicken as it is easier on the tummy - but its plain food that is most important.

Word of warning - a few days on the plain food and Alfies poo turns bright yellow! Solid but bright! It can come as a bit of a shock after the ice cream stage!

MrsL

I keep a packet of Tesco's cheap frozen fish fillets in the freezer, especially for tummy upsets. A couple of minutes in the microwave and they are ready to go

MrsL123 · 24/01/2010 15:02

Ahhh see we can't cook fish in our house without our two piranhas cats circling round my feet howling to get some. So that's why it's chicken for us

Boiled chicken makes me though.

Bella32 · 24/01/2010 15:07

Boiled?

Steamed in Bella's house my dear, steamed.

Have to say, cheap fish fillets being microwaved is pretty boakworthy itself

Even Bella's cats decline the offer...

MrsL123 · 24/01/2010 15:45

Steamed chicken? Oooooh get you! You should get yourself over to the ready meals thread on AIBU and make everyone feel guilty I could post on it myself and make everyone feel better about themselves, but I fear I may be stoned. Even my roast beef is being accompanied by aunt bessie's roasties, frozen yorkie puds, microwave steam veg and bisto gravy. So your dogs get fed better than my DH

I just tend to chop up the chicken and boil it, then do the rice in the yucky chicken juice water so it absorbs some of the flavour. That's as creative as I get! Oh no, wait, I did poach some fish fillets in goats milk once when one of the cats was sick. I felt like delia!

Bella32 · 24/01/2010 16:21

MrsL - you are the next Pet Domestic Goddess - the fish in goats milk has got my tummy rumbling!

Don't feel bad about the Aunt Bessie's - Bella, naturally makes her own Yorkies - but there is a professional Nanny on here who feeds her dog organic pork while her hubby gets Aunt Bessie's

MrsL123 · 24/01/2010 16:41

Sounds like my kind of woman! Don't forget though, this was the man who fed me danish pastries last night for dinner. Me thinks aunt bessies craps on that from a great height

Bella32 · 24/01/2010 17:15

Aw, MrsL

You need one of these

MrsL123 · 24/01/2010 17:26

Oooooh matron!

newpup · 24/01/2010 17:50

Only on here could a thread about dog poo end with a photo of a naked man baking!!!

purpleduck · 24/01/2010 18:37
