That's it really - supper is now in the dog. She looks very pleased with herself, though!! Still - at least it is an improvement on on frozen poo.

The puppy is winning....

StayingSantasGirl · 01/01/2010 13:42

Yes - and she's managed to defeat dh's slipper too!

Lol you have my sympathy !

Our last pup ate £250 worth off glasses and a chair in about 30 minutes

hamsterlover · 01/01/2010 18:06

On Tuesday my dogs stole a big box of dark chocolates off the side and ate them all. One trip to the vets and 45 quid later they are fine...

TipsyFairydifferentID · 01/01/2010 18:07

how old is she?

StayingSantasGirl · 01/01/2010 22:39

She's 7 months, Tipsy. I'm wondering how I go about training her not to nick food from the kitchen worktop. MIL advocates a smack with a rolled up newspaper on the nose, but I am not sure about that.

Think you have to be firm and say No to her distract her with a toy that she can chew. A bit like a toddler really.

releasethehounds · 01/01/2010 22:50

It must be something about MILs - mine thinks a rolled up newspaper aimed at the pup will cure anything.

Doesn't though...

You too have my sympathies; our border collie pup is now 10 months old and is just starting to get a bit better behaved. However, during the local fireworks last night at around 2 am she had a barking fit, woke up the kids and then proceeded to take a huge chunk out of our bedroom carpet with her teeth! She's never done that before!

StayingSantasGirl · 01/01/2010 23:41

Perhaps the rolled up newspaper would work better on dh - who is the one who left the bacon within ddog's reach. And knowing my dMIL, she would approve wholeheartedly of me doing that!!

If she ha slearnt to steal food from the worktops, it will be extremely hard to prevent her doing it. Whatever method you use (and I wouldn't suggest a rolled up newspaper!) will simply teach her she cannot get away with it while you are around, btu as soon as you leave the room...

The best way is to make sure you leave absolutely nothing where she can get it. This will work in two ways. First of all, she won't be physically able to steal anything, and secondly, you may find that eventually (and it'll take a long time) she will stop looking up there for things once she realises there is nothing up there worth having and then you might be able to leave things up there again.

fruitshootsandheaves · 02/01/2010 14:46

Mine ate the Turkey one year

PhaseolusPrope · 02/01/2010 14:55

Mine ate the whole house. And she only weighs five pounds...

Totallyfloaty35 · 02/01/2010 22:31

Pup has so far eaten 3 Mac chargers DH is hopping mad, its £180 to replace them.It doesnt matter where we put them,he always finds them.He ate 2 today

releasethehounds · 02/01/2010 22:41

It's a nightmare with a pup isn't it? I repeatly tell DD2 (6) to put special things where the dog can't reach them but she's so laid back she needs constant reminders! Yesterday DH found her 'UP' DS game (which Santa brought this year at great cost) with a doggy toothmark in it (arggh) - luckily it seems to work still. Cue one 6 year old given a real talking to (sure it doesn't go in though).

We lose loads of dog balls on walks but today I was lucky to find one in excellent condition left by another dog in the field by our house so I brought it home. It is now in 100 separate pieces over my living room carpet - oh well. More of the same tomorrow.

Romanarama · 03/01/2010 11:51

Mine ate a sock this morning. I called the vet and he said not to feed him for 24hrs, to give him paraffin oil as a laxative, to check poos for the sock, and to bring him in if he starts vomiting. Is this ott? I'm very worried about a sock block! He's 12 weeks.

(He seems perfectly fine, btw, and is looking for more socks to ingest).

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 03/01/2010 13:53

Our puppy seems to prefer dh's socks - he isn't allowed to keep them on, ever!! She removes them as carefully as she can, given the lack of opposable thumbs, but does occasionally try to take a toe or two with the sock! She hasn't eaten any yet, though - she takes them away to her cage and stores them lovingly.

releasethehounds · 03/01/2010 21:59

Romanarama - our pup (unknown to me) ate one of DD2's socks and I only found out when cleaning up the inevitable from the garden - it came through complete, no effects on the dog!

Sorry - I know that's TMI.

Onlyaphase · 03/01/2010 22:05

Romanrama - one of my dogs has eaten many, many socks over the years, and like Releasethehounds, have usually only noticed when clearing up the lawn afterwards. We did find that as a puppy, he was likely to eat socks, teatowels etc, and they would either go through with no trouble, or he would be a bit off colour for a few hours and then vomit up the offending item.

Actually, he ate a sofa over a period of weeks, with no ill effects that we could see - to the dog anyway, the sofa didn't make it.

Romanarama · 03/01/2010 22:37

Phew, that's a relief. I won't worry too much then. He seems full of beans, as per usual. (Not TMI in the circs, btw!)

NickeeS · 03/01/2010 22:50

Our dog ate 2 courgettes off the side in the kitchen, he never ever stole anything again after having sh1ts for 3 days.

Romanarama · 05/01/2010 07:07

He vomited the sock up this morning, 48hrs after ingesting it. It must have just been festering in his stomach.

PhaseolusLunatus · 05/01/2010 11:10

So pleased to hear your pup is now sock-free, Romanarama!

BikeRunSnowflake · 05/01/2010 11:15

Sounds like you are having a similar day to me with DS ££££.

Divatheshopaholic · 05/01/2010 11:17

socks and puppies
glad he is sock free,too

Romanarama · 05/01/2010 13:59

Thanks!

Sorry if tmi, but I feel like telling you the whole story...

He puked on his rug in the kitchen, next to dh, other side of room from me. I could see that it wasn't regurgitated pro-plan, so I yelled "It's the sock!! Pick him up quick, quick, I'll get a bag to chuck it", and (d)h stood there looking at him as he ate the puked up 2 day digested sock and I had to leap across the room, rugby tackle him, put my bare hand down his throat and pull out the slimy monstrosity. [retch emoticon]. Fgs.
