novice dog owner here
dh and dss2 have always had dogs and are reassuring me that this is just what happens sometimes and he will be ok

I'm wobbling like when I a new baby and dont quite know it yet and panic about everything it does

so, aside from ensuring he doesn't actually eat anymore tennis balls or anything else not dog food, do I need to do anything else

will he be ok, can you talk me down please?

We have only had him since sunday and earlier I was asking dh if he thought Duke was happy here with us

Clearly I am a lost cause

Sure he will be ok. My dog has eaten odd things and thrown them back up (nice!).

Dogs cause as much worry as kids!

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 17/04/2009 23:17

thanks tortoise
so its not a completely unusual thing to happen

if most of the half of the tennis ball has come back then fine. Lucky you, you will now feel compelled to pick through the sick to reconstruct it,

He will be fine.

Mickey at chocolate coins at christmas inc the foil! He threw them up in the middle of the night.
Also has eaten bits off cuddly toys and brought them back up!

Dogs are great!

Tortoise · 17/04/2009 23:20

ate not at!*

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 17/04/2009 23:21

My late dog used to eat shitty nappies (disposable) and barf them up again. Lovely to come back to. He lived to 18.

My current collie eats any kind of shit lying around (we live on a farm) with no ill-effects. She rarely barfs.

My other dog eats cat shit, (she thinks we don't know) again, no ill-effects. She also likes to eat footballs, shredded bit by shredded bit. She rarely barfs.

As long as he's eating OK tomorrow, I wouldn't worry.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 17/04/2009 23:22

Oooh, but keep him away from chocolate, grapes and raisins. Highly toxic, potentially lethal to dogs.

tigerdriver · 17/04/2009 23:23

not the right thing to say on this thread but ug dogs are disgusting aren't they. soooo not like cats.

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 17/04/2009 23:23

oh yes
thanks old lady

I already quizzed the rescue centre about what is toxic to dogs
apparently also mushrooms and onions aren't good either

you can leave now tiger

Mickey ate a good handful of grapes! I was really worried it would kill him after googling. Luckily he ws fine.

Also raw onion can be bad for them. (Also something Mickey has mananaged to get hold of!)

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 17/04/2009 23:26

your dog sounds like a fun handful tortoise

Ok, I will slink off with my orange and black tail firmly between my legs.

If we manage to make our big move North then we'll have a collie. So dogs are ok really. As long as they live in a barn and don't have to be taken for walks

I like them really, sort of, just not as much as cats. but only outdoor cats who catch things.

Tortoise · 17/04/2009 23:32

lol that he is TR! He is a right food thief! Other than that he isn't much trouble. Sleeps 90% of the day!

Do you have/are you getting pet insurance?
Best thing i ever did was getting Mickey insured. Stupid dog ran full greyhound speed into a barbed wire fence. Vet bill £380 by the end of treatment.

TrinityIsGettingABabyRhino · 17/04/2009 23:34

we have 4 weeks free pet plan insurance from the rescue centre and I will be carrying it on

Tortoise · 17/04/2009 23:35

I had free month with mickey when we got him too. And used it after he hurt his paw!

Can't believe we have had him over a year already.

tigerdriver · 17/04/2009 23:39

v boring point but check the terms of the free insurance, it might not be as comprehensive as you think, but of course the chances of it being used in first four weeks are remote.

then check what the terms are for the new stuff. I pay my mum's insurance for her two mutts (not new, but on a renewal) and it was going to be £85 ( yes £85) per month until I queried it and strangly it has gone down a lot.

def worth having it though, I had about £6k of treatment for one of my babies cats last year. Couldn't have done it w/o the ins.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 17/04/2009 23:43

Actually, my dogs both eat (small amounts) of (cooked) onion and garlic too - they get leftovers after our dinner, again, no ill effects. Mushrooms too. Raw carrot is a favourite of the collie, but my mongel won't touch broccoli.

KingCanuteIAm · 17/04/2009 23:45

If you really want to be sure you could get all the bits and make sure he has bought the whole thing up [ barf]

I was going to post today to find out how Duke was doing but it sounds like he is doing exactly wht a Collie/Puppy should be doing

bella29 · 18/04/2009 09:57

Trinity - you need to make sure he is keeping his food down and that he is pooing normally. If not, he needs to see a vet.

And while stories abound of dogs who eat onions/grapes/raisins and are 'absolutely fine' these things don't necessarily produce symptoms, but they can wreck their kidneys and cause damage which won't show immediately.
