I'm so awfully very completely excited about getting a dog, we are looking at one tomorrow and dh just isn't as excited as me, come and be excited please

The other one to try is those balls on a rope, they can be whirled around then released to fly a long distance. THey can be better because it is a different flinging action and places less stress on the shoulder IYSWIM. If I were you I would get the dog used to both and then alternated them. If you imagine flinging a ball 20 or 30 times on a walk, twice a day, 7 days a week.... you can see how some people find it affects them in the end!

Our dog liked frisbees - and she soon learned that the best thing to do was to bring them straight back rather than chewing them! She is a stick fiend - but frisbees were apparently an acceptable alternative - less dangerous for her and much easier for us.

I do, however, recommend that you take a bag with you for any toy - its really nice, particularly for collie type dogs, if they can have some time not thinking that they will have a toy - then they do sniffing around and playing with other dogs - otherwise they can get fixated on their toys and never really partake in 'normal' dog stuff - I think a mixture is probably better for them overall...
