I already have one 3 yr old female mini norwegian forest type fluffy cat. She is moody, antisocial and dim as hell.

I love her, but she's not a lap cat, or even a 'touch me at al' cat!!

I have adopted a stray kitten from a rescue centre, and she is so sweet, loves a good cuddle and talks away to me. This a good thing, as i am a single mum and i just thought she'd be great company.

I have now read up a bit about torties and they seem to have alot of fans!!

is she pure tortie or tortie and white?

piratecat · 06/01/2009 19:26

she's pure tortie. short hair, about 4 months. no white on her, not a calico type. Black with flecks!!!

like my mums cat then. Mind, Molly is completely differently temperament wise to yours, but she had a bad start in life. My sister rescued her after seeing her thrown across the front room of a now ex-friends house by a younger sibling.

HeadFairy · 06/01/2009 19:36

I was told by my vet that torties are the fiesty red heads of the cat world. Was certainly true with mine, she was really funny, not terribly affectionate, but ballsy and cocky. She died of a heart attack in front of me almost a year ago now.

differentID · 06/01/2009 19:40

Molly has a mind of her own certainly! She will certainly finish a fight too.

piratecat · 06/01/2009 19:46

that's very sad headfairy.
This one, well , the guy at the rescue pace said, that he thinks those genetics have started to watery, as the last few tortires he has seen have been quite sweet tempered.

thiscone, you can wear as a scarf!!! She's def got her own personality tho. Yet it's so nice to have a cat that's please to see you and be with you. My other cat has even started to be 'nicer' more animated. They are geting along well, no scraps yet!

i have a grey torti aged 13

she is beautiful, very very sweet and very gentle...

and a good hunter

piratecat · 06/01/2009 19:52

oh cheeky, i am thinking the same here, as this one is flying at all the bits of paper and cat toys. She's a bit quick!

cheekysealion · 06/01/2009 19:56

its a shame i cant remember mine as a kitten...

but she is still going strong only last week was playing with a live mouse on the stairs she had hunted from the field!!!

i cant face getting them out so i tend to scream at her till she takes it back out and it runs off

piratecat · 06/01/2009 19:57

does she 'talk ' alot?

mine seems to comment on everything. it's great having someone to talk to!!

I have a dark tortie with no white - she's got oodles of character, is very feisty and talks constantly! She's a rescue cat which is why i always assume she's not very affectionate but I wonder now if that's just the type? She seems a lot brainier than our other cat - a totally dim stray who spends all day purring or sleeping and has no personality but is very cuddly! I love the way they all have different natures and you never know what they'll be like when you adopt them!

HeadFairy · 06/01/2009 20:01

Piratecat, her awful start in life may have contributed to her fiesty nature, she was badly abused, starved, had 9 litters in a year (or something like that) and was so emaciated when she was rescued all her fur had fallen out and she'd gone blind. But she recovered fully and lived to 17 so not all bad. She had a lot of love in our house too.

PestoMonster · 06/01/2009 20:14

We have inherited a dark tortie from my neighbour. She did have a twin sister, but she went missing a few years ago and was never found. She is the loveliest cat ever. Very good-natured, likes sitting on a lap or one of the beds, will also talk to you if you talk to her.

I feel so lucky to have her, as DH was adamant not to have another cat after our last one was put to sleep when dd1 was a baby. (Ill due old-age)

piratecat · 06/01/2009 20:16

she fell on her feet then headfairy.

this one was clinging to the wire of the pen when i visited the resuce place. I only went in for a look, and she was there rubbing her head, her back, and any part of her against my finger's thru the wire.

So i signed up, got a home check and as of friday she was mine!!!

Mine used to do that whenever we took her out in her cat box. When ever we had to take her anywhere like cattery etc, I used to have her on the passenger seat and I'd poke my fingers through the wire front and she'd rub up against them. Thank goodness for automatic cars as my fingers would be stuck in there!

bramblebooks · 06/01/2009 20:27

We have two tortie and white longhaired sisters, affectionately known as the evil twins or the velociraptors. Both 7 and not yet sat on anyone's lap voluntarily.

SummerNights · 06/01/2009 21:20

We had a tortie and white cat - she was a feral farm kitten and never volutarily went near anyone except dh over whom she was totally dotty. She was an excetionally good hunter and would be away for 3 weeks plus at a time in the summer.

I rememebr when dh was away and she hurt her paw - I took her to the vet and she was running around on it fine after a few days - until dh came home a week later when instantly she was limping on three legs and seeking sympathy from him lol

Sadly she died a few years ago (when dh was away) but we still have my 4 other babies who all have different characters

PS dh says the 'red headed' analogy is highly appropriate as I am a red head too

NorbertDentressangle · 06/01/2009 21:28

We have a 13 yr old tortie who is as mad as a box of frogs.

Despite her age she acts like a kitten running up doors and sitting on top of them, tearing up and down stairs etc.

She has a "thing" about elastic bands and socks, carrying them around and playng with them.

She'll also play "fetch" with a scrunched up crisp packet -you throw it and she'll run and pick it up in her mouth, bring it back to you and drop it into your hand.

Shes incredibly affectionate, in fact I find it too much. Since having children I like to be able to sit down in the evening without her purring, dribbling and head-butting me for attention so she does it to DP now and lies in his arms like a baby.

have really enjoyed reading this thread
we got a grey and cinnamon tortie from the blue cross about 3 weeks ago.
She is truly adorable, really friendly and my 1st ever lap cat after having cats all my life.
However,... she is so nervy. She hasn't yet left the living room won't go outside, won't even go upstairs.
not sure how to encourage her. Any ideas?

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/01/2009 21:52

Picture, please, piratecat!

Jux · 06/01/2009 21:52

I had one proper tortie and one calico. The tortie was sweet but neurotic as hell. The calico was so thick and laid back that I wondered if she actually had a brain!

The tortie was a lap cat and very affectionate. The calico would lie on the sofa beside me and would take a bit of petting, but woe betide you if you went too far!

Both very purry and loud.

Ingles2 · 06/01/2009 21:57

oh and mine has never made a sound! she mews but no sound comes out, bizarre no?

differentID · 06/01/2009 22:09

my mum's Molly is lik ethat. She makes the mouth shape but no sound comes out! She rarely purrs either.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 06/01/2009 22:12

Torties are definitely the fesity madames of the cat world! I say it is because they are all females- they are female in the extreme . Very strong ideas about what they will and will not tolerate!

differentID · 06/01/2009 22:13

Damn right
