Starting to get to breaking point with my cat(s)

Have had non stop problems with my cat from the start. I have 3 cats, who I love very much (chloe, meg and jess hence name). They are all about 3 years old roughly. Chloe is Persian and the others are just normal cats.

I am pretty sure Chloe is the one with the problems but can't be 100% as don't often see it.

Basically, had a lot of problems with her weeing on the carpet, and somtimes poo too. We used to have litter trays but it got so stupid, had to have 6 or so different ones because she was so fussy about it, had to clean it everytime one of them did a wee or poo which restricted how long we could go out for etc and the cats would fight etc over them and we would STILL have wee on the carpet. When I started to register as a CM we tried them without the trays and the problem just went away. All 3 cats went in the garden (cat flap), the fighting stopped and so did the wee on carpet.

Then, the last few months, it has started up again. I first thought it was because of the cold, but I often see them out playing/lying in the garden.

Have tried everything.

Have been out all day and have come home to wee and poo everywhere. The bath has wee all over it, all over DDs toys, Bath mat has wee on and there is poo in the corner, in the dining room/playroom there is poo on the cat bed and wee on carpet.

I just can't do this anymore. I love them to bits but this isn't working for anybody.

I was thinking about getting Chloe re-homed but I am worried that she will just have the same problem else where and keep getting passed on from owner to owner . I think she would much prefer to be an only cat and this might be where the problems lie as we seem to have tried everything else.

I thought that the disinfectant sprays made things worse? If not, would be greatful if you could tell me which sprays you get.

The Pheromone plugs are what I have ordered, and we already use the spray. Does anybody know if the plugs will make the whole room smell good to her or if it will just be the area round the plug? I know "smell good" is not the right term but I couldn't think how else to word it!

Hope to have all of upstairs sorted for her by the time the plug ins arrive so we can plug them in and let her up there.

Should we also spray the feliway stuff on our bed, DDs cot etc or will that make her want to sleep on it? I don't mind her sleeping on my bed, as long as she doesn't wee on it, but don't want her in DDs cot.

Its the whole room. And it will make her want to sleep on it. I just use the co-op's own brand citrus disinfectant. It's never made the smell worse. I don't use just use disinfectant sprays though I mix it up in water and get on my hands and knees and scrub the area

I make the sprays myself by mixing some of the disinfectant with water and decanting it into a plant sprayer, much cheaper than buying it ready mixed.

No, I don't mean make the smell worse, I mean make the problem worse, as in make the cat want to wee there more?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 07/01/2009 14:18

No he won't go near it after it's just been cleaned. He walks over sniffs and then walks off looking all hurt and disgusted. The smell wears off after a few days though.

Any disinfectants which are ammmonia based will make the smell pronounced to cats, and will encourage them to use that area again. In addition, any phenol-based ones (Jeyes, TCP etc.) which go cloudy in water are toxic to cats (I really do get bored silly banging on about jeyes fluid, so sorry to anyone who has heard this from me before... )

The best thing to use is a solution of biological washing powder or liquid - the enzymes break down the compounds in the cat's urine which smell. There are also a few specialist sprays - PAH do one called Simple Solution and vets usually keep one too.

The feliway diffusers will make the whole room smell good from a cat's perspective - you may not even need all of them.

Hope this works and that your mum and friend give you a break! You could always invite them to babysit the cat to see what it's like!

plain old lemon juice can be great too if it's something that won't be stained by it like a dark carpet.

when we had a litter of kittens that were trying to use the plant pots as toilets i put chunks of lemon in all of them and they avoided them like the plague afterwards

chloejessmeg · 08/01/2009 22:43

Pink - that is what I thought, however the link to the cat expert site thing in this thread says that Lemon can make a cat want to wee there? I thought it was meant to be a good thing to use, but that site says the opposite?

PinkTulips · 09/01/2009 19:14

that's weird... the kittens definitely didn't like it at all and avoided it, mother cat wasn't too impressed when she stuck her nose in one either

how's the new territory going so far?

It's been a while, just wondering how your cats are doing Chloemegjess?
