dh "hates our dog"

2manychips · 07/12/2008 17:55

My dh has told me our little lively jrt is "past his sell-by date". He admits he is bored with him, does not wish to waste time on him and wants rid.. if he is home alone with him the little dog wont even stay in the same room. Dh never remembers to give him fresh water and has been known to forget to feed him. What shall I do? I'd be so upset to let him go.

seriously? Get rid of the husband! he sounds like a selfish self-absorbed horrid little shit.
How old is the dog?

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 07/12/2008 17:58

So because your dog has got old he doesn't want anything to do with him?!?!

sorry I gotta leave this thread

kayzisexpecting · 07/12/2008 17:59

I think if I was you I'd be telling my DH he was "past his sell-by date" and I was bored of him.

Remind your DH that a dog is a living animal and not a car. You can't just get rid of the dog if you are bored of it.

Dropdeadfred · 07/12/2008 17:59

are you for real? seriously?

2manychips · 07/12/2008 18:01

yep,horrid isnt it? he's only 4 and a half.

OP posts:
TipsyFairydifferentID · 07/12/2008 18:03

do you know what, I would wonder if forgetting to feed him is the least of your worries.
You realise that your dog probably has at least another 10 years in him.

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 07/12/2008 18:03

Did you have the dog before him or was it a joint decision to get dog?

Dropdeadfred · 07/12/2008 18:06

have you got children with him....? if so i hope they don't unloveable past toddlerhood

2manychips · 07/12/2008 18:06

I know he wouldnt physically hurt him but when I work (2ish days a week)is it fair to leave him with someone who doesnt care for him or would I be better giving him away?

OP posts:
2manychips · 07/12/2008 18:08

He bought him! Fred-thats precisely what I said to him...

OP posts:
AaliyahsFirstXmas · 07/12/2008 18:09

I dont think it matters for 2ish days a week as long as DH is at least letting him out to pee. It'll just be that the dog becomes more yours than his.

Also - DO you have kids, maybe he needs to understand that this dog should be treated as a kid too - not soemthing that can just be "got rid of" at a moments notice.

kayzisexpecting · 07/12/2008 18:09

I wouldn't want to leave him with your DH but it isn't fair that the poor dog has to be given up just because your DH can't be bothered to make sure he has fresh water and food.

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 07/12/2008 18:10

If he bought him then he is a purely selfish twit who needs a kick up the arse! Does he not know how many dogs are put to sleep cos the owners didn't want them no more!

I work for a rescue so Grrr stepping away for a while.

Dropdeadfred · 07/12/2008 18:10

do you still want the dog? or is your dh voicing how you both feel ?

2manychips · 07/12/2008 18:12

I still want my dog v much.

If you dont want the dog then please go to here to get a GOOD home for him where he will be loved

TheSeriousSanta · 07/12/2008 18:14

My DH is the same. Our DDog is 5 now. His kids (my DSDs) were 5 and 8 when we got the dog and they were all as keen as mustard.

Kids are 11 and 14 now and really not fussed about the responsibilities of the dog. DH (like the OP) would have shot of the dog in an instance.

My way of dealing with it, though, is I've said I'll rehome the dog (to my parents, who adore the dog) but DH has to say 'I want the dog to go' cos all he actually does is get stressed but not actually say what we both know he's thinking.

FWIW, I would never leave the dog in DH's custody (even for a day) he won't walk him, feed him, check he has water or even let him out for a pee.

It's very sad. And, I'm very lucky knowing that my parents would take the dog as there is no way on earth I could ever let him (the dog) go. He is a lovely dog, by the way.

Sorry, no help or advice, but sympathy.

Then just because your dh doesn't like him anymore doesn't mean he shouldn't look after him responsibly. Ater all I'm sure he does other jobs he doesn't enjoy...washing up? hoovering etc....just tell him to think of the dog as a chore that neds to be done...unless he's cruel to the dog of course

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 07/12/2008 18:38

My DH isn't keen on "our" dog, but I got the dog on the understanding it would be me who looks after it. So if I'm asleep at night but DH hears her bark/wine, etc then he kicks me awake to go down "and sort your dog out".

But he will let her out in the garden when he's home and I'm not. If noone else was about then I'm sure he woudl also feed her, but if I'm not home then DD will sort her out in the evening.

I think umless you're away for days o nend then it shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you do the fresh water before you go out.

2manychips · 07/12/2008 20:03

Thanks Stripey and Tss, so I'm not the only one in this situation. I'll do all I can for my furry friend,he's got such a sweet nature and dd loves him. Fred, I'll get dh to include him in the chores, shame it has to be like that.

2manychips - DO make it HIS responsibility about his feelings though.

My DH would LOVE if I took the subtle f'ing obvious hints and gave the dog to my parents, but I have said, in no uncertain terms, that the only way I will do that if he says:

I want rid of the dog. I will take responsibility for getting rid of the dog.

Cos I know he won't do that. He's putting the pressure on me, hoping I'll make the decision, but it's not going to happen.

If he wants rid, he's going to have stand on his own two and make me choose between my marriage and my dog.

I know that sounds a bit OTT, but that's what it would take.

Good luck... I hope you can find some middle ground. Can you find a friend or dog walker for the days you have to work?

McDreeamy · 07/12/2008 20:14

We have a dog - or at least DH has a dog and I really don't like him. He's a lovely dog but he smells and malts and it's always me that has to clear up after him. If DH is around he will walk him etc but will just let him straight back into the house - mud everywhere , or bath him and leave wet dog towells everywhere

If I am on my own with him I will of course feed him, walk him, let him out etc but I must confess I get no pleasure out of him at all It can all get me feeling quite down.

DH loves him dearly as do the children so he will stay with us. Just wanted to add the other side. DH got him before we were married, it wasn't a joint decision.

othersideofthefence · 07/12/2008 20:16

I'm incredibly saddened by your situation.

My first JRT lived to be 16 and was a much loved family member until the day he died.

If your DH is fed up of him now I dread to think how he will cope when you have an old dog. Old dogs can cost huge amounts of money - mine needed daily medication from the age of 11.
During his final few months he wasn't 100% continent.
We had to base our routine around him as he needed to go out frequently.

Part of the reason I love my DH so much is that he never once complained (he was nominally my dog, although we both loved him) and he did everything he could to make every day as comfortable as possible for our boy.

2manychips · 07/12/2008 20:20

I've got my parents who do love him,so I may well do that. He is a lively, excitable boy though. Dh says other dogs just sit in their beds all day.. Do Jack Russells calm down with age?!
