My cat passed a 5" piece of string that she had eaten when rummaging through someone's bin.

It had been attached to a chicken carcass.

Not much help, I'm afraid, but it was quite impressive - once I had stopped crying with terror.

Kittens can get it if they are straining a little.
It's not a major problem unless it gets stuck out and then dries out and gets sore and infected- then it is a BIG problem.
keep an eyeon, and if he has diarrhoea you need to get that undercontrol

Leave it on, until last scab has gone or until return to vet.

Make sure you take a photo of cat with lampshade for awwww purposes.
