Wees, poos, sleepless night - anyone else got a new puppy?

Having kidnapped hatwoman's thread about boisterous young dogs I thought it was only fair that I set up my own! If anyone wants to share hints, tips or general crises with regard to their new puppy, please do so here! You are among friends who won't blanch at descriptions of bowel movements, chewed possessions or sleep deprivation...

Hello all!

Welcome, shantistar, and glad to hear the move has gone well, eemie. Still amazed at your pup ringing a bell

As far as nipping clothes goes, I've done the same as you shantistar & say no! loudly & firmly. My pup has more or less stopped doing it now (he's 4 months) so persevere!

shanistar - it might be an idea to wait before you encourage him to play with something else. otherwise he could make a connection - if I do x I get shantistar to play with me. saying no and then completely ignoring him - literally turning your back and folding your arms - means you're not "rewarding" him in any way. that's the theory anyway. and please don't ask me how you get a 2 year old to comply...I can only trot out what my book and my teacher says

Could I join this thread please?

We got a cavalier king charles pup just over a week ago. I am exhausted! 3 children , 3 cats and a puppy seems like a lot now I'm in the thick of it.

I would really love some advice on biting. She is fine when play biting but is getting rather aggressive and growling and biting really hard. Sometimes pulling at clothes to the extent of ripping them. Not sure how to deal with it. Currently just saying no and staying still but it bloody hurts!

She is 9.5 weeks. Start puppy training next week after 2nd jabs.

Hello 3 cats too - got 4 cats myself, plus 2 dc, hamster, older dog & puppy so I know how you feel!!

I have been very firm as regards play biting with my new pup, even though I allow my older dog to do it (I know, I know!). I think the firm 'no!' does work (given time!) and - some readers of this thread may chuckle at me - have you got lots of toys for her to chew/tug/rag/squeak whatever? I genuinely have a toy rotation chart and bring out 3 new toys every day of the week - gotta get out more

Bella! Stop encouraging others to join your toy obsession!

Our lab pup (16 weeks tomorrow) nips alot at the moment but only the DDs. She has made DD1 cry a couple of times. We say no really firmly and completely ignore her for a while. I think persistance is the key.

We had our first puppy training class last week and it was great. pup was a bit scared of the bigger dogs to start with as some were 6-9 months but soon got braver.

Hello all! Running a bit late today as I rely on pup to wake me at 6.20am but of course this morning he slept until 7.10. Not sure what the other mothers made of my excuse of 'the puppy overslept' when we all screeched into the playground...

Glad to hear the class went well, newpup, although obviously somewhat disappointed you have still not fully understood the momentous and life changing impact that a toy rotation chart could have on your life..

We've got our first class on Thursday & looking forward to it but pup didn't want to go in the car yesterday I'd had both dogs out for a short while on Saturday & he was fine but when I opened the boot yesterday my older dog jumped in, while pup made a beeline for the house. I didn't want to make a big thing of it so left him at home but hoping he'll be OK come Thursday. Don't want to have to start feeding him in the boot etc. to get him over any problems,
but hopefully it won't come to that.

OK, off to catch up now. Have a good day, everybody!

Oh, can I join?

I got an 8 week old labradoodle yesterday!

He's completely gorgeous and we are all in love!

Not too many accidents, and a very peaceful night last night, so I'm wondering if this is the calm before the storm!

Friendlypizzaeater · 09/09/2008 15:00

Can I join too ? Gota 12 week Bearded Collie, not too many accidents yet - he kept weeing pooing on any mat he could find so now have paper down. He can finally go for walks on Friday but I fell downstairs the day we got him and have ripped the muscle in my knee so they will be short ones !!!

Love the idea of the bell

Hello new people. Welcome

Off to the second puppy training class tonight. Pup has the devil in her today so not sure how it will go!

Had a great walk today despite the rain. Pup found a really big mud puddle to roll in . Our yellow lab is now a chocolate coloured one!

bella29 · 13/09/2008 15:48

Hello all!

Had our first training class the other night and pup was actually quite well behaved, only disgracing himself once by totally ignoring me when I asked him to sit, and by proudly displaying his little 4 month old manhood for all & sundry!

Am feeling a bit sad as I can see he's starting to look like as small dog now, not a big puppy, but he is lovely...

Hope you're all getting on okay

Hi everyone

Sonny is getting on well, although we have much work to do when walking outside on the lead. Started taking him out for the first time on Monday but took us ages just to get outside out property. You could see he was nervous and far too busy looking around to even think about walking to heel! Can anyone re-assure me this is normal and that it will get better??

Good news - first completely clean night, woo-hoo!

bella29 · 21/09/2008 14:03

Well done, Shantistar, on the clean night!

Yes, it is normal for the pup to be concentrating too much on everything else & not on actually moving forward in a straight line (why on earth would I want to do that, when there's all this over here to see?, thinks pup!). It will come witn time, and lots of encouragement. You can also practise walking to heel off the lead by coaxing him along with teeny tiny titbits, and also to pay attention to you by saying 'look' or 'watch' and wafting a titbit under your chin, then giving him the titbit when he looks up at you.

HTH & that all the other pups & pup people are well
