Wees, poos, sleepless night - anyone else got a new puppy?

Having kidnapped hatwoman's thread about boisterous young dogs I thought it was only fair that I set up my own! If anyone wants to share hints, tips or general crises with regard to their new puppy, please do so here! You are among friends who won't blanch at descriptions of bowel movements, chewed possessions or sleep deprivation...

Oh great!! I do know the chewy phase is from 16-22 weeks, so we have not hit this phase yet! I think they hit an hormonal phase about 7-18 months too, when their behaviour can regress! Oh joy! My parents have labs and say that it is totally individual. Some of theirs have not really chewed at all and others have been destruction machines. I have to say, they have all been really well behaved though. My parents are very strict with them and exercise them alot, so that must help (fingers crossed)

Here's hoping ours are the exception - I suppose that's why it's so important to set ground rules now, before the little monkeys get going with their adult teeth. I do remember a dog we had when I was growing up, and she completely ate a pair of my mother's high heels, leaving only the heels (obviously not to her liking). The whole family then got into the habit of putting shoes high up - bit tricky to explain when you go to someone's house and automatically place your shoes on their window ledge, rather than beside the door like everyone else

Update. I had a letter from the senior vet at our practice this morning. Apologising for the whole vaccination thing. Basically, the vet I saw is new ( read - just qualified) and should have given her the vaccination! They have made me an appointment next week after surgery hours so I do not have to sit and wait. Unfortunately, I can not make it so am hoping they can move it to the end of this week, before we go to my mums. Waiting for a call back today!

I loved the way the senior vet refered to 'teething problems' with the new vet .

Puppy has been really whiny this morning and it is tipping it down so I can not take her out for a romp in garden to tire her out. The weather is so awful !! Much easier when DDs can play in garden with her.

I totally agree about the setting ground rules now, funny though I seem to remember having the 'putting things on high shelves' conversation about toddlers with my friend a few years ago Must be the same principle!

hatwoman · 11/08/2008 12:31

glad you got an apology - but next week isn't quick enough - you need to be taking her out!

we have a wicker shoe basket in the hallway and it now lives on the hall table...looks ridiculous but prevention is best and all that...

bella29 · 11/08/2008 15:17

I agree with hatwoman, newpup - can't you persuade the vets to see her sooner? They can always squeeze people in and I really think they ought to, given it was their mistake in the first place. That way you could rest a bit easier when you go to see your parents with her...

I have spoken to the senior vet on the phone now. They will see her on Monday and vaccinate her then, I have an appointment so I do not have to wait in surgery. They said she will be fine at parents house as the dogs are known and healthy but I can not take her out for walks. But they said I can not take her out in public places for 10 days after her vaccination anyway!! I did not know this, so it will be a while before we can take her out yet basically almost another 3 weeks!!

Good job the puppy training classes do not start until September. It is disapointing and the DDs are so looking forward to taking her out.

Did you have to wait this long?

justhavingamoan · 11/08/2008 17:12

I crate mine - best way to avoid accidents/chewing whilst out. plenty of exercise and lots of toys.

bella29 · 11/08/2008 18:13

Hello justhaving... welcome to the thread!

No, newpup, I only had to wait a week. Perhaps it is a different vaccine? What a shame though about not being able to take her out. Still, I suppose the time will come around quickly enough & it'll soon be cold dark nights when we won't be quite so keen to go 'walkies'!

Another plus is you should have the 'walking to heel off the lead' pretty much sorted in that time - won't you

OP posts:
newpup · 11/08/2008 18:42

Oh yes of course Am I supposed to have started that already?

Welcome too Justhaving.

bella29 · 11/08/2008 18:48

What on earth have you been doing all this time, newpup?!

OP posts:
bella29 · 11/08/2008 18:50

I could understand if you had been painstakingly constructing a toy rotation chart, as some of us have done!

OP posts:
newpup · 11/08/2008 19:43

What are talking about?

I'll have you know my pup can woof the alphabet backwards, tap dance to 'how much is that doggy in the window?' and can balance her foodbowl on her head whilst howling 'Who let the dogs out' !

hatwoman · 11/08/2008 20:45

how much is that doggy? who let the dogs out? A is into Mozart

bella29 · 12/08/2008 08:57

My pup finds Mozart a little too commercial for his taste. He's more of a Shostakovich fan. I, meanwhile, have no such scruples. When I get up at 6am & there seems little point going back to bed I watch Dawsons Creek (Fiver) or, at the weekends, Dallas (UK TV Gold). You'll be glad to know that JR is still up to his old tricks but Pam & Bobby are looking a bit shaky. Keep you posted

OP posts:
newpup · 12/08/2008 09:12

Ha Ha. I too have been watching Dawson's creek So much teenage anxt!!

Okay I did a bad thing today ! Got up at 6.15am let pup out, fed pup, let pup back in again. Went back to bed (just for half an hour) Fell asleep and DD1 wakes me 1 and 1/2 hours later to tell me pup is crying. Legged it downstairs and poor little pup is crying by the back door in an enourmous puddle of wee. I am ashamed She has been fab at telling us she wants to go out and I feel awful.

I am a bad puppy owner

bella29 · 12/08/2008 09:24

Yup, poor pup was going cross eyed holding on while you snored away. Don't know whether I am more shccked at that or the frankly cavalier (haha) attitude to toy rotation in your household.
Might have to set up another thread for people who want to do this properly

OP posts:
newpup · 12/08/2008 09:37

I shall leave hanging my head in shame!

Note to self : Must be a better pup owner, must be a better pup owner, must be a better pup owner, must be a better pup owner .........................

I am looking after my sisters 8 month old dog as she's on holiday.

He has just eaten my birkenstocks that I LIVE in.

Hate the little fecker now.

hatwoman · 12/08/2008 20:53

it's not his fault though! if pup can reach shoes he will chew them. it might be your sister's fault for not making that clear...

bella29 · 12/08/2008 22:22

Hey all!

Thought we might have had our 2nd accident free day in a row today but the pup had other ideas - still, it was only a little wee! To be honest, the flatulence is more of a problem - you get all snuggled up with your lovely angelic looking puppy at your feet when suddenly he emits the most noxious gas known to man. I know from bitter experience that some dogs are just more farty than others - have I got the short straw - again?

Hope you've all had a good day. Make sure you haul yourself out of bed tomorrow, newpup - if only for Joey & Pacey's sake

OP posts:
cheesesarnie · 12/08/2008 23:06

i want one!!!!!!!

bella29 · 13/08/2008 09:00

They wee, they poo, they eat your birkenstocks - and you want one, cheesesarnie?!
You must be as mad as us - come on in!

OP posts:
newpup · 13/08/2008 09:54

Morning puppy fans. Joey and Pacey, pacey and joey, Dawson and joey, Dawson and Gretchen... Can I take any more?

I never saw it first time around but I have seen the final episoide so kind of know where it is heading!

My DH left for a business trip at 5.30am today which confused pup no end. Actually, after her morning constitution and her breakfast, she went back in her crate to sleep for 2 hours!!. So i could go back to bed without feeling guilty and there were no puddles!!

Yesterday she went mad and ate a whole tub of plants in the garden! Then she ripped her bed to shreds before going to sleep for 4 hours!!

Mad dog! How is your little stinker today bella.

bella29 · 14/08/2008 09:24

Hello people & puppies

Where has the summer gone? It's cold, wet & miserable here

Hope your pup's better behaved today, newpup. Mine is doing fine - didn't even have a 'gas alert' last night - just as well since we had lit the log fire & could well have spontaneously combusted if he'd done his party trick.

On a more serious note, think I may have to stop watching Dawson's Creek. It's too much for me at 6am. I never liked Joey Potter but at that time I find her quite unbearable.

Gotta go - pupppy crying to go out!
have a good day all!

OP posts:
newpup · 14/08/2008 10:40

I think Summer has been and gone. I am fed up of glum days and buckets of rain!

Got up this morning, blue sky, sunshine. Put heaps of washing in the machine, just put it on the line and the sky has gone all grey and gloomy and looks like rain, again!

My sister, mum and nephew are driving down to see pup today and was really hoping to be out in the garden. Nephew is 2 and a bit of a handful!! Garden is much easier as I am abit short of things for a small boy to do!

Ah well. Have a good day all.

ps. know what you mean about Joey Bella
