Is it worth putting my two cats in cattery for a night ?

On Sunday we are going away for the night and in my head I thought they will be okay alone (2 cats both 3,bonded and healthy )
We leave 8am Sunday and arrive back home 6pm Monday.
Will they be okay at home ? Or should I take them to our cattery ? There’s spaces and they accept 1 night but our girl is a very nervous girl and hates going.
I don’t know if it’s going to be more upsetting.

I think they’ll be a lot happier at home but can you get someone to check on them?

If you don’t have a neighbour or friend you can ask, you should be able to find someone on a site like Pawshake or Cat in a flat.

aterriblefish · 23/12/2025 08:54

You can leave food in a timer dish - that's what we do.

MuggyBonehead · 23/12/2025 08:54

For one night I would just leave them, with plenty of food and water out

Pepperedpickles · 23/12/2025 08:57

i would get a cat sitter to pop in twice over the period to feed them and make sure they’re okay (and in our case to lock / unlock cat flap as we don’t let them out at night). We have someone who does it for £12 a visit. Any longer than a day or so we’d put them in a cattery.

ZaZathecat · 23/12/2025 08:57

It's way less stressful for them to stay home alone for a night with food and water available than to be moved to a cattery

Puravida23 · 23/12/2025 08:57

I would definitely leave them if you can . Make sure doors are open and they have access to litter tray and food/water and ideally if you can get a neighbour/friend to check in . But the cats will be much more comfortable at home
Enjoy your night away

Danikm151 · 23/12/2025 08:59

Plenty of food and water out and they will be fine.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/12/2025 09:02

My cat would be totally fine with this and we’ve done this lots of times over the years. Leave food in a couple of different places, make sure litter tray is clean etc.

HostaCentral · 23/12/2025 09:03

I always leave Arthur alone for that amount of time. He's fine. Extra bowls of food, especially dry. I do let the neighbour know we are away but Arthur hates our neighbour so he doesn't come in!

Gingertam · 23/12/2025 09:06

Your cats will be fine for one night. I leave mine for one night with plenty of food and water and he's always been okay. I would never leave him longer than one night but I think one night is okay.

inkyspells · 23/12/2025 09:16

The cats don’t do well with strangers coming in.
We tried that and Luna hid and wouldn’t come out even when we got home.
She wouldn’t eat either
its such a worry as she’s so nervous

Luna is the girl cat ha ha

Stupid question but would you move the Christmas tree ? I’m worried they might get their heads tangled in the lights or something ?

Also they are house cats

Ours is always fine by herself for that long. We have one of those time release food things, so she doesn't eat it all at once, make sure theres plenty of water down and the litter tray is immaculate, and she's fine.

When we get home she gives us her "You abandoned me you twats" whinge, but to be honest, she does that after 4 hours sometimes. We'd put her in a cattery for any longer than one night, but she gives us far more grief for that than leaving her alone.

Mumdiva99 · 23/12/2025 09:24

I would have 2 timed feeder dishes - one for the evening meal and one for the morning meal.
Ours are not really fussed by the xmas tree - but if you are worried take it down or move it.
My husband bought home security cameras which we train on the food bowls - so we can see if they pop up and when the cats eat, and one on the stairs/landing so we can see them walking around.
I think for 1 night it's less stressful to leave them at home.

superchick · 23/12/2025 09:24

I'd leave mine for 2 days/one night with plenty of food and water. Mine are 2.5 years, bonded, healthy sisters and the stress of the cat box/car ride/going somewhere new would not be worth it. I have a local friend who feeds mine if I'm away longer and have used a sitter from "cat in a flat" before which also worked well.

MsGinaLinetti · 23/12/2025 09:34

I would safety check the house- consider keeping them in a restricted area to avoid accidents and definitely leave for one night

inkyspells · 23/12/2025 09:34

@superchickyeah the car ride they are normally shaking like a leaf ,they not used to being outside the house so they go off their food as well ,at least at home they eat and feel safe

Definitely fine to leave them for one night. I would remove any hazards such as the Christmas tree though

inkyspells · 23/12/2025 09:38

The two troublemakers themselves are oblivious to my worry’s ha ha

I would put them in the cattery. But that’s because I know from experience that with them alone at home I would worry incessantly. Assuming the cattery is a nice one, it will not hurt them to be there overnight- and if you are a cat worrier like me maybe it would mean you have a relaxing time instead of constantly wondering ‘how are my poor lonely cats?’

Admittedly my local cattery is lovely though, run by a lady who takes a real interest in all her (mostly repeat) four legged guests & I think is genuinely fond of them. So I never worry about my boy when he is with her.

AgnesX · 23/12/2025 09:50

Can you get a sitter. The amount of stress taking them to the cattery for one night isn't worth it.

We gave up with the cattery as the vet bills afterwards weren't worth it (UTI's from stress).

Butterflymoth · 23/12/2025 09:51

Depends on your situation but we leave ours for an overnight, as it seems the least stressful option! They’re still in their home with their things. We leave plenty of dried food and clean the tray just before we leave. I wouldn’t do it for longer but a night I always think it’s fine. I would maybe move the xmas tree to avoid any risk and I’d leave a camera on so I could keep an eye on them. For longer then 24 hours, like yours, I might ask someone to pop in and give them some attention in the morning but if you can’t I still think leaving them is the best option. They have each other for company too.

HalloweenVibe · 23/12/2025 09:53

Just saw the update that yours are house cat. In that case, you'll be the best to judge if they'll be happier in a cattery or at home. My girl goes out all the time and we don't take her to a cattery for any overnight stay. We give her food on the morning of the first day, leave her biscuits and then give her food when we get back the second day. We leave her water but she also has access to a fish pond (which she already drinks from). She's far happier at home.

It really depends on the temperament of your cats.
