Little Dogs in Prams

Is this a new trend? I saw several of these this summer. They weren't fancy prams for show, just dark, practical looking ones.

I find it a bit odd as surely even small dogs need exercise. Although, I once knew a chihuahua who had to be carried for the first half of his daily walk, or he would run back home!

We used a doggy pram for our senior dog when he couldn't manage to walk outside any longer but still enjoyed going out with us.

Maybe people are wanting to take their dogs on whole days out and know their dogs wouldn't manage it without the pram.

There's probably lots of practical reasons.

That makes sense, as I saw most of these dogs in the kind of places you'd take a day trip to.

Maybe it's just a coincidence that they were all small dogs, mostly toy breeds? Obviously, I know that dogs of any size can develop a disability.

It's very common where I live, see it all the time.
Stereotyping here but it's usually older people doing it and I'm not sure if it's because the dog is disabled and needs taking out for fresh air and stimulation or they just can't bear to leave the dog at home for any reason and push it around like a child substitute and take it everywhere they go. I suspect in most cases it's the latter.
It's always small/miniature breed dogs. Maybe they can't walk far because of their breed/short legs? but if so just go for an appropriate length walk twice a day and leave the dog at home!

I mentioned up thread about my SIL taking her puppy out in one before it had its vaccines. Her neighbour ran up and said 'Oh congrats, I didn't realise you'd had a baby'

Out came a woof from the pram which startled the neighbour. It just makes me laugh and what the poor woman must have thought! 😂

I have one - unused so far- for our cavalier king charles spaniel He has had intervertebral disc disease from an early age. He has coped very well with daily meds and loves to be out and about. Recently however he tires quite quickly. He sets off with great enthusiasm but when he’s done, he’s done and wants to go home. I’m monitoring this but will deffo use his walker when needed as he would hate being left home. I’m thinking I might attach a sign explaining his disability to avoid the opprobrium of others

Some friends of mine had a backpack for their Frenchie. It was elderly and couldn't walk far and they had another dog which needed a lot of exercise, so the Frenchie would go out as far as he could and then be popped in the backpack so the other dog could get his cross-country walk.

Bonkers, but sweet.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 26/09/2025 14:36

I felt so self conscious when we used one for our elderly dog (she was 17 when she died) She loved a gentle stroll but couldn’t go too far so needed if we wanted to walk for more than 10 minutes. Also id much rather take her with us for a day out than leave her at home. Great view, lots of smells and plenty of pets from people thinking she looked adorable in it.
It’s been 20 years since I used a buggy for the kids - I realised I’d really missed it as you can shove everything in it too!

They're a lovely idea for post operation and older dogs.

Yes, we have used them for this reason.

Our older dog can manage to wonder around the park or woods, but he wouldn’t manage the walk there and back as well.

We also foster dogs, some who have needed operations after being abused by their cunty owners, and although they might not be able to walk until they’re recovered, they still need and deserve to see the outdoors.

Anyone who judges is a bit of a twat.

I saw this on a busy bus, standing room only, and there she was with this dog pram. It isn't enjoyable to be hemmed in against a stinky dog. This one was panting, and oh, the dog breath. I don't think they should be allowed when mum's with prams and small children, wheelchairs and older people are made to wait.

I don't care if people put their pets in prams.

I do care if they expect me to make-way for them or give them preference on the pavement/footpath.

Where I live the dog pram is in the pram/wheelchair seat at the front of the bus which is bloody ridiculous, pity the poor driver who has to prioritise the seating

SeaAndStars · 26/09/2025 15:00

My mum had one of these when her dog got older. Dear old boy still loved a walk around the park but was beyond the stage where it could walk the mile there and the mile back. The dog was about 15 kilos so there's no way mum could have carried him.

Mum was elderly and couldn't drive so it was ideal. They both got their exercise and to socialise with their friends. It was a lifesaver.

SatsumaDog · 26/09/2025 15:01

I think it’s great for pets that are unable to get around on their own. It does still take me by surprise though, especially when it’s a cat or on one occasion 2 ferrets!

Starwarsepisode3 · 26/09/2025 15:02

I had one for my elderly dog. He lived to be 18. He had a good life except he wasn’t able to walk very far and I had a younger dog who liked a big walk so it mean I could take him.

I also had a kiddy trailer for my bike that he used to go in and he loved it. My grandkids are in it now and it’s still called the doggie trailer 🤣🤣🤣

Westfacing · 26/09/2025 15:02

No it's not new they've been around for years.

Oakiedoakie · 26/09/2025 15:04

Older dogs still enjoy getting out and about even if they aren't able to walk any distance. I would have loved a dog buggy when our last dog was frail but they weren't really a thing then.

That’s so lovely. 💜

I used to love taking him out in it. We could go out for the day and he could join in instead of being left behind. We used to put him in the trailer and we cycled miles. There’s no way he would’ve been able to walk it.

I tried him in a basket on the front but he didn’t like it. And he was really too big for it.

arcticpandas · 26/09/2025 15:05

Surely they are used by people referring to their pets as their fur babies? I have seen many around and tbh most of the "mums" look slightly unhinged so I stay clear.

What's even worse is the proud mums of newborns walking their dolls around. It always gives me a weird feeling, like it's a dead baby in the stroller. Only happened twice (to my knowledge).

I love it when the kids and us are getting ready and my son brings out the trailer. I’m not going to lie it sometimes brings a wee lump to my throat. They use it a lot - I’ve given it to my son and DIL for them - it’s really been a good buy for £50 off gumtree about 7 or 8 years ago.

The grandkids didn’t even exist when the trailer was bought!

I heard a cat miaowing whilst on the bus then realised it was coming from a pram.

I heard of someone using an animal pram to take their rabbits to the vet on the bus, maybe the cat was going to the vet. It might be hard for some people to carry a box.

Arran2024 · 26/09/2025 15:09

I have one for my bernese mountain dog - it's not small obviously but anyway his legs are going and it meant we could take him out with our other dog and he would do what he could and then he would climb in.

When we got our younger dog 6 years ago, there wasnt such a range of options. Back then we wanted something to put him into so he could come out with all of us. I bought something but it broke after a few weeks.

Now though Amazon has loads and loads of suitable buggies to choose from. It has gone mainstream.

No. You’re wrong. My Pet was never my fur baby.

He was just old with no way to walk 5/10 miles or even the mile to the park and home.

He had no other issues - we got it when he was 15 or so I asked the vet every year and he used to say he’s just older and slow but as long as he’s interested and happy and participating in life there’s no need to make the big decision.

And when he lost that, I made the decision.

At least a pram is better than these bonkers things...

@MidnightPatrol yes probably a combo of what you say, though she was being quite erratic in general
