Adopting a dog privately - not via a rescue.

Wellsonsea · 11/09/2025 20:28

A friend of a friend - casual-says that she has to go back to work full time for economic reasons.( was pt )
They have a 4 year old shiz tu
dog and arranged a walker each lunchtime since she has gone back to work.
This is £15 per session and is therefore £ 300 per month .
They apparently feel this is also not good for the dog and want a home for him were he will have more company.
Are people really this selfless- if so struggle to give my dog up due to finances.
I am really tempted to adopt this dog .
The thing is they live in another town some distance from me so Id have to assess the situation on a visiting basis.

I know will have to be careful as this could be a difficult dog etc. as its without the back up of a rescue.
i will get permission to call their vet .
can i insist on returning if he does not settle .? If so how ?
what if he didnt settle .
He is 4 .
I am aware that dogs need time to adjust. Am experienced dog owner , but not of this breed.
Can anyone advise?
Have spoken to
them on phone and they sound genuine and anxious re their dog .
Ive found that they have advertised the dog for sale and i will post the link- but I have first refusal.
Please do not judge the site they have advertised on- they asked me loads of questions and sound worried.
The advise I would really appreciate please is
. what questions to ask
. how to
judge if they are genuine .
. how to assess the dog
. how to safeguard things if it breaks down( and if they say i cant return him if it breakes down- do i walk away)
On the face of it - he really is my type of dog.

NormaNorm

I am going to meet them soon .
Can you please explain to me how the genetic aspect will with the ‘ teacup’ aspect- ie small heart , etc
if the parents are health tested- which is good of course- how will that help the small aspects inherent issues?? Help. Much appreciated

That was one of my very first replies ! re ' miniature '

however he doesn't look that small in his photos

re genetic tests, he has read my message but not replied.

Have you met Buddy yet ?!!!

Wellsonsea · 13/09/2025 17:59

Going now!!!!

I think you ought to treat the situation as if he were a rescue in a shelter - no history known and anything / everything you find out about him is a bonus.

btw why are you buying a dog from a private advert on a website and not adopting from a rescue ?

and £700 is a lot of money for a 2nd hand dog looking for a good home...

Wellsonsea · 13/09/2025 18:25

If i fiind he is genetically tested - does that help re the tea cup health issues tho ( a bonus i knoe but isniy still a problem to have a minindog ) sorry In hurry as go in now

and you have fallen in love !!!

so

how big or little is he

do you, now you have met him, think he is a miniature ? or is it possible it was just a word used to make him sound more attractive for sale / maybe the hairdresser used it in the first place ?

any idea what he weighs ? or could you ask tomorrow

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/09/2025 21:19

I’m massively put off by the fact that they are advertising him for £700
it might be a nice dog but they don’t sound responsible at all.

are you adopting or buying? Tread very very carefully

Could always say one has come in to a private rescue near me at £300 donation which is a much better price for me. seeing him on Tuesday.
Maybe they expect the price to be pushed down, I don't know how these things work. I said £300 to be pushed to £350 which is a normal adoption fee.
They want him gone to a good home and all this having someone taking up their time etc. Maybe they'd cave.

Little dog zoomies, funny.
Big dog zoomies on and off my sofa, not funny.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 13/09/2025 21:39

They are asking an awful lot of money for such down to earth people, esp when they want rid of the dog !
I wouldn't be surprised if that is the amount they paid their hairdresser for him in the first place.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 13/09/2025 21:43

Do they have any paperwork for Buddy, i.e. pedigree papers from The Kennel Club
or which is possible, the hairdresser didn't plan on having puppies and it was an accident and there is no paperwork...

Wellsonsea · 13/09/2025 21:43

Any thoughts on size

OP posts:
OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 13/09/2025 21:44

3.6 kilos, he is little. but possibly just a little runt and not an alleged miniature...

Shih Tzu
Last updated April 2025
A breed standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance including the correct colour of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed.
From time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Breed Watch information related to this breed for details of any such current issues. If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure. However, if a dog possesses a feature, characteristic or colour described as unacceptable, it must not be rewarded in the show ring.

General appearance
Sturdy, abundantly but not excessively coated dog with distinctly arrogant carriage and 'chrysanthemum-like' face.

Characteristics
Intelligent, active and alert.

Temperament
Friendly and independent.

Head and skull
Head broad, round, wide between eyes. Shock headed with good beard and whiskers, hair growing upwards on the muzzle giving a distinctly 'chrysanthemum-like' effect. Not affecting the dog's ability to see. Muzzle of ample width, square, short, not wrinkled; flat and hairy. Nose black but dark liver in liver or liver marked dogs and about one inch from tip to definite stop. Nose level or slightly tip-tilted. Top of nose leather should be on a line with or slightly below lower eye rim. Wide-open nostrils. Down-pointed nose highly undesirable, as are pinched nostrils. Pigmentation of muzzle as unbroken as possible.

Eyes
Large, dark, round, placed well apart but not prominent. Warm expression. In liver or liver-marked dogs, lighter eye colour permissible. No white of eye showing.

Ears
Large, with long leathers, carried drooping. Set slightly below crown of skull, so heavily coated they appear to blend into hair of neck.

Mouth
Wide, slightly undershot or level. Lips level.

Neck
Well proportioned, nicely arched. Sufficient length to carry head proudly.

Forequarters
Shoulders well laid back. Legs short and muscular with ample bone, as straight as possible, consistent with broad chest being well let down.

Body
Longer between withers and root of tail than height of withers, well coupled and sturdy, chest broad and deep, shoulders firm, back level.

Hindquarters
Legs short and muscular with ample bone. Straight when viewed from the rear. Thighs well rounded and muscular.

Feet
Rounded, firm and well padded. Well covered with hair.

Tail
Heavily plumed, carried gaily well over back. Set on high. Height approximately level with that of skull to give a balanced outline.

Gait/movement
Arrogant, smooth-flowing, front legs reaching well forward, strong rear action and showing full pad.

Coat
Outer coat long, dense, not curly, with moderate undercoat, not woolly. Slight wave permitted. Hair not affecting the dog's ability to see. Length of coat should not restrict movement. It is strongly recommended that the hair on head is tied up without adornment.

Colour
All colours permissible except merle, which is unacceptable. White blaze on forehead and white tip to tail highly desirable in parti-colours.

Size
Height at withers not more than 27 cms (10½ ins), type and breed characteristics of the utmost importance and on no account to be sacrificed to size alone. Weight: 4.5-8 kgs (10-18 lbs). Ideal weight 4.5-7.5 kgs (10-16 lbs).

Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

*Note for prospective puppy buyers
Size – The Kennel Club breed standard is a guide and description of the ideal for the breed; the size as described does not imply that a dog will match the measurements given (height or weight). A dog might be larger or smaller than the size measurements stated in the breed standard.

but

it's quite clear you are not buying a KC approved puppy, you are buying and yes you are buying, not adopting a dog, that is no longer wanted.

you would not get a KC specific dog from a rescue, you would not know the dog's history from a rescue dog - it's a chance.

A rescue would only be able to tell you what they were told when they received the dog and what they have observed since.

so it's really pot luck.

when I ' rehomed ' my 2 dogs, all I knew was that they were 2 years old, were born at home to the shih tzu she already owned and the shih tzu got pregnant by the pug puppy they later bought.
My girls were micro chipped and vaccinated. full stop.

But as I said I did not pay for them. My costs were petrol, overnight hotel ( and dinner etc ) then the cost of neutering both of them after their next season.
And 15 ? months later I went back and got the father as she was trying to rehome / sell him on Facebook !
thus I now have the pug father too :)

and so far we have all lived happily ever after.

they said he was the runt
he seems such a good dog for me as in he is fun and cuddles
the thimg is they are not willing to wait for me to tesr him asbthey habe others limed up and i can see that from the account activity
my only concern are around the health - the vet said no issue and he had been regularly seen according to pet plan
His nose is incredibly flat and barley protrudes but he runs round like a rocket!

OP posts:
OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 13/09/2025 22:01

Wellsonsea · 13/09/2025 22:08

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon
