How do you get rid of dog poo?

Greyhoundnewbie · 26/07/2025 07:40

I am a new dog owner, a lovely retired greyhound. She seems to only poo in the garden rather than on walks. She averages 4 poos a day and they are HUGE. I have a small secure bin specifically for the poo bags in the garden, but that needs changing every 2 days. If I put that in my black bin, which is changed every 3 weeks, is that going to be ok? Or infested with flies and maggots?
Am I missing a trick, or is this just what I have to do?

I bag mine up and put them in the rubbish bin, that’s emptied every 2 weeks. No maggots here.
Last summer the bin did get a bit pongy, so I collected the poo bags and took them to the nearest public bin at the park

GeniuneWorkOfFart · 26/07/2025 07:44

What is she eating? Maybe swap her to a food that produces less poo - our dog poos twice a day and they're not huge, but she's on 80% meat kibble (plus some high meat content chews and the odd carrot or broccoli stalk) so there's not a lot of waste in her diet tbh!

Glitchymn1 · 26/07/2025 07:46

You just bag and put in the bin, I suppose you could have a separate bin you keep elsewhere on your property and just transfer it on bin day.
No maggots or flies here either.
I also wouldn’t dump it in a park, there are posters on bins in our local park about taking carrier bags of waste, it’s flytipping.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 26/07/2025 08:57

Would agree about changing her food for a better quality kibble.
Buy a large box of poo bags. Clean up straight away, don't just leave it sitting in the sun. Bag it, knot it, bin it. We used to have three giant breed dogs and that is a lot of poo, but we had a good clean up routine, no smell, no flies, no maggots.

Libre2 · 26/07/2025 09:02

Not sure I do agree re changing food - 4 a day is about right for a greyhound- they have a crazy fast metabolism. Also don’t change it soon after getting her as it will all horribly wrong. If you do change, do it slowly and integrate with the existing food for a while.

My guess is she will start going on a walk soon once she gets used to everything. Enjoy - they make lovely additions to a family. Ours is 11 now.

SpanielsGalore · 26/07/2025 09:18

I have three spaniels. They are fed a decent quality food and can poo four times a day. They'll sometimes go four times on one walk if it's an exciting one.
A retired greyhound does not need an 80% meat diet.

To answer the question, when my dogs poo in the garden I bag it up and put it in the general waste dustbin, which is collected every three weeks. I've never had a problem with flies or maggots.

I think sighthounds poo a lot more than the average dog 😁

Coffeeishot · 26/07/2025 09:21

I.pick it up straight away i double poo bag i have never had maggots.

KPPlumbing · 26/07/2025 09:42

We only have a small dog, so small poos.
We have a plastic bin in the garden, lined with a carrier bag, and a trowel, and put lots of poos into the bin until it's full, then double bag amd put it out on bin day.
Even on the hottest summer day, it doesn't smell of anything. It just smells neutral, like soil, and we've never had flies or maggots.

VioletIndigoBlueGreen · 26/07/2025 10:02

We also have a retired greyhound and they are known for having delicate systems! We have a small pedal bin in our driveway where we put bagged poos that she does in the garden, then we take these with us on the next walk, so only ever one or two at a time, and throw them away.

Nevertrustacop · 26/07/2025 10:05

I take them to the dog poo bin, when we are out for a walk.

ButterCrackers · 26/07/2025 10:09

Do you not have a space to put the dog poo in your garden? If you leave it away from where you sit, vegetable plot etc on soil, grass it will go away fast due to slugs and general disintegration. I’ve never bagged up dog poo in my garden as I have the space for it to compost down.

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 29/07/2025 13:08

If its in the garden I scoop up using a long handle scooper that I bought from Ebay then flush it in the downstairs toilet. No bending, no messing about with plastic bags, perfect 😊
It's a but like this one I the link below.. I've had it years, it was a great buy.

Gross, our next door neighbour did this and had a garden full of shit, it was really disgusting. In the winter especially dog poo can take a, long long time to break down, even in ideal conditions it takes weeks if they do large poos.

Dog poo shouldn't go into our waste system. They can be infected with parasites that are resistant to our wastewater treatments.

I bag mine as soon as my dog does them. I throw them in a plastic plant pot and then either take them to the dog poo bin when I take him out for a walk, or I double bag them and put them in my general waste bin.

Luckily my garden is bigger than that of your neighbours. My dog has the freedom to run and explore in a rural environment.

😯 I've been doing that for many years. I know that cat poop is a definite no to flushing but I'll have to look into it again re dog poop. I thought only problem was if large dog re blockage but my dog is very small.

Toxocara is the problem with dogs; the parasite that can cause blindness. Our water companies usually advise strongly against putting dog waste down the toilet.

You can get a garden poo container which essentially just goes into a deep hole which you eventually dig over and move to a new place. I dont have one, but might be worth looking into.

I had one of these, albeit many many years ago, so they may be better now but the poo never broke down. I got rid of it in the end.

We pick ours up with kitchen or toilet roll and put it down the toilet, she's dewormed etc every two weeks. Saves the bin stinking!

We have a fully dog proofed six acre garden and field combined and I still pick up everything. I don’t think there is any size of garden that I wouldn’t! Combined with all the badger / fox and muntjac shit that I don’t pick up and a neighbour’s cat, I’m definitely not adding 40 odd piles of dog shit a week to the place.

You’d be hard pressed to locate the dog poo in the undergrowth and trees. How do you check a field for dog shit? Fox poo is something that dogs roll in but again it’s not possible to find it. I’ve never heard of anyone rurally bagging up dog shit on their own property.

Trixibella · 29/07/2025 17:33

My dogs go at the same time most days - so I let them out in the morning into the field after they’ve had breakfast and pick up after them. Takes about three minutes!

They get a 90 min walk mid morning which depending where we go is stick and flick or bagging - another shorter walk of an hour after 4pm which starts in our field then round the neighbour’s big arable farm but they poop at the beginning of it on our land so I bag it and then they go out before bed, and I bag it!

I very very occasionally come across a dog shit I haven’t picked up (so I pick it up!) because they’ve gone when they’re just nosing around during the day (looking to eat cat shit) but they’re pretty regular as dogs go and I don’t want to step in it, I don’t want visiting children who love our field and garden especially in June when it’s all daisies and wild flowers to step in dog shit, and same goes for the gardener doing hedging or whatever else he’s up to.

I don’t know anyone who just lets the dog shit build up in their own garden! And everyone here is rural and has dogs and plenty of garden. Even on a footpath on someone else’s land I would flick into a ditch, not just leave it there!

I’m not leaving it building up either - I spade it away on the paving and if it’s on the grass but otherwise it’s in undergrowth of trees far from buildings, where we sit, plants etc growing, it’s not near a water source. No bags needed. On walks my dog rarely shits - but we are ready to clean up as required. What gets me is the people in public places that let their dog shit on the public pavements and grass/park areas. This needs more checks and fines.
