How do you get rid of dog poo?

I am a new dog owner, a lovely retired greyhound. She seems to only poo in the garden rather than on walks. She averages 4 poos a day and they are HUGE. I have a small secure bin specifically for the poo bags in the garden, but that needs changing every 2 days. If I put that in my black bin, which is changed every 3 weeks, is that going to be ok? Or infested with flies and maggots?
Am I missing a trick, or is this just what I have to do?

If its in the garden I scoop up using a long handle scooper that I bought from Ebay then flush it in the downstairs toilet. No bending, no messing about with plastic bags, perfect 😊
It's a but like this one I the link below.. I've had it years, it was a great buy.

You what!!! I've never heard of anyone flushing it down a toilet inside their house! I understand that its also poo, just never heard of that before! 😕

I put garden poo in the compost bin. It gets covered over with grass cuttings and makes great compost.

I have two house cats. I scoop their poo into nappy bags and put it in the main outside bin. Put their used litter in the main bin too when I’m cleaning out their litter. Not sure what else I’d do with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

All my dogs poo once a day including my bull greyhound and my greyhound.

It will be the diet that is creating an excessive amount of poo.

Hi . My dogs are smaller and I use a shovel and get rid down the toilet. The idea of poo bags sitting around the property gives me the ick

How about the idea of intestinal parasites from pets surviving sewage treatment (which is only designed to deal with what's found in human poo) and being in the water that comes out of your tap? That tends to give me the ick...

Flushing it down the toilet doesn't just make it Go Away, it makes it a whole new problem that sewage treatment systems aren't set up to handle safely.

A special pet waste composter (various brands available) would be a better idea. Or if you can't handle the idea of dealing with your own pets' waste at home, a dedicated bin outdoors that you can empty on bin day. But please don't flush it!

We throw ours in the black bin (in bags obvs!)
But the bins are a long way from the house in a bin store and I am not the kind of person to clean my wheelie bin!

ACynicalDad · 25/08/2025 08:34

Can’t believe how many prime take them to the park, explains why those bins are overflowing. Can also go with garden water if your bags are compostable and that’s emptied more often.

Get a toddler, they will guarantee to find any errant poo and track it everywhere, thus removing the ‘mass’ issue…

(I've cleared up a lot of poo today, cheers dog, and your hidden ninja poos!)

I bag ours up, put it in the wheelie bin and it’s emptied every two weeks - no issues with smells, flies or maggots. If it’s a warm day and the pile hasn’t been solid and has left residue on the grass that will attract flies, I sprinkle baby powder over and it stops the smell and dries it up
