Think the neighbours dog killed their neighbours dog

My neighbours have an Akita dog who barks at everything that goes by. The owner's relative lives next door and had 2 small dogs of their own. The akita was frequently jumping the fence into next doors garden. I heard the Akita dog attacking another animal, either one of the dogs or a cat, i didn't see it happen but heard lots of commotion. Now there is only 1 small dog to be seen, and the akita owner has put it on a lead at all times in the garden so it can't jump the fence.
Should I report this to anyone?

Do you know them well enough to ask where the other little dog is.

Avengersassembly · 10/07/2025 12:59

Speak to the owners of the small dogs, they may have already reported the incident.

They are very unfriendly and ignore if I say hello

If they are related then I wouldn't bother saying anything to either of them or reporting the incident. They would probably deny it anyway if something awful did happen and they may have come to an agreement between them that the dog is now kept on a lead to avoid it happening again.

Screwcorona · 10/07/2025 14:39

Yes..next time it could be a child

Mumofferal3 · 10/07/2025 14:41

Surely tou can do this annonymously.
As someone above said, it could be a child next time.

MissMoneyFairy · 10/07/2025 14:44

You can report your concerns to the council dog warden or rspca ( who won't do anything)

I can see why you are concerned but you don't really know what happened (if anything). I don't think you should report it until you know more facts rather than guesses/assumptions.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 10/07/2025 15:08

Sadly the only stories I know about Akita's involve blood and death.
As a large ddog owner I know it isn't the dog to blame...

Hotflushesandchilblains · 10/07/2025 15:10

I doubt anyone would do anything. But it does seem likely what happened. How awful.

That’s what I was thinking.

There’s a family who own an Akita by me and every single time I’ve seen it since a puppy, it literally drags its owner along whose quite a slight adult and I always hold my breath passing them as I have no faith if it really wanted to it could attack and the guy wouldn’t be able to hold it back. So if there’s any doubt I would anonymously report. But I guess you need proof first. It sounds highly likely from your account but it’s still all circumstantial.

And this is all that’s wrong with the world…. When it kills a child, attacks a person or another animal I hope this sentiment keeps you warm
at night.

Of course you report it. If only for a paper trail.

Seagull5 · 10/07/2025 15:40

Definitely let the police know

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 10/07/2025 16:08

Such a difficult one. The problem is, you don’t know. It also looks like they have taken appropriate action… after the horse has bolted. Infuriating as an Akita owner because it’s obvious they will attack a small prey like dog and they should not be able to jump a fence. The only reason I wouldn’t report is because they have taken action. do they walk it?

@Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreetif it helps, there’s no blood and death from my Akita. Just judgement and selective deafness.

It bloody is, if there's a killer dog in the same road.

ETA I'd be reporting this to the RSPCA and then, depending what the RSPCA say, the police. That is a dangerous dog.

Swimforthewin08 · 10/07/2025 17:04

Please report your suspicions. What if a poor cat jumps in the garden or it goes for a child? I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t. As someone else had said it’s a paper trail should anything happen.

Most akita enthusiasts would beg to differ - dog aggression is to be expected as is human aggression. They're a very violent breed but very dignified and regal so I can see the draw. You could argue the dog isn't to blame because it's poorly managed, but it does deserve some blame if it has a nature that makes it destroy other people's pets.

That is because they are not a dog for the first time dog owner. They are when treated properly and trained some of the best behaved and good natured dogs out there. However, like Rotties/GSD’s and mastiffs they seem to attract some unwanted attention from idiots who do not have a clue how to deal with them or handle them.

As for OP you have no information whatsoever as to what has happened so until you have factual information then you should keep out.

Crazy shot in the dark here, but if this dog had killed a neighbour's dog, wouldn't said neighbour have raised a complaint?

Op said the neighbour is a relative.. which is why if it did happen they’ve been hush hush I guess 😔

My next door neighbours dog got off the lead, raced across my driveway and chased my cat, the mauled him. The neighbour didn’t even bother to tell me. I took the neighbour the vet bill and called the police, the police wanted to charge me for harassment as I took him the bill. I was calm and polite yet apparently his kids were scared. He was a police officer and knew how to play the system. Luckily I recorded the conversation. My cat died, the vet treatment cost 7k. I took it to the police and the MP. No one cared. Apparently the dog was boisterous and doing what dogs do naturally.
