Think the neighbours dog killed their neighbours dog

My neighbours have an Akita dog who barks at everything that goes by. The owner's relative lives next door and had 2 small dogs of their own. The akita was frequently jumping the fence into next doors garden. I heard the Akita dog attacking another animal, either one of the dogs or a cat, i didn't see it happen but heard lots of commotion. Now there is only 1 small dog to be seen, and the akita owner has put it on a lead at all times in the garden so it can't jump the fence.
Should I report this to anyone?

I also realise now it wasn't a cat because I've since seen their cat alive

I’d report, so I can sleep at night knowing I did what I could. They will deny it happened though

My next door neighbours dog got off the lead, raced across my driveway and chased my cat, the mauled him. The neighbour didn’t even bother to tell me. I took the neighbour the vet bill and called the police, the police wanted to charge me for harassment as I took him the bill. I was calm and polite yet apparently his kids were scared. He was a police officer and knew how to play the system. Luckily I recorded the conversation. My cat died, the vet treatment cost 7k. I took it to the police and the MP. No one cared. Apparently the dog was boisterous and doing what dogs do naturally.

I’m so sorry that’s awful. I’d be so so angry and would be naming and shaming on as many local Facebook groups as I could!

Yes we should all ignore dangerous dogs, alongside child abuse, sexual predators and other threats to public safety.
That's how societies improved surely.

I am so sorry to hear this - my cat was attacked by a neighbours dog, but it was in front of my house, I saw it (and pulled the dog off). The vet bills were only about 500, and the dogs owners tried to get out of it - I was all set to take them to small claims court when they settled up. No authorities gave a shit, even though the dog was not properly secured and was going to attack my dogs before it saw the cat.

My cat was by my front door but chased away and attacked. I had the whole lot on CCTV and no one cared. I went down the small claims route to get the money back. I gave him a month to pay and on the last day he put a letter through my door saying his dog insurance was dealing with it. He was complete a hole to us yet I was the one who had lost my cat. There seems to be a lack of care and compassion shown towards cats by society and it’s about time it changed. My other cat has since been chased by a dog, 60ft in the air up a silver birch tree, he had to be rescued by 13 firemen. Luckily they had no emergencies that day and came out. I’ve also been bitten by 2 dogs. No one cares.

Believe me, I tried my best.

No harm in alerting the police then your conscience will be at rest and it’s out of your hands what happens then.

Then she will be charged with harassment. Wait a minute let me shut my big mouth and wait for the excitement to happen and the poster to be carried away in a straight jacket. I'll starting searching on Facebook now. 🍿

Hardly straight jacket behaviour to be upset and pissed off about not getting justice for a dead pet is it 🙄

Up against a police officer good luck. Popcorn at the side ready 🍿

She recorded the conversation without him knowing it doesn't look good. My neighbour tried to do the same thing to us and then he had to shut his mouth and put signs around his house letting the public know he was recording them. He could have her in court and he would win compensation for recording him and frightening his children. I can only imagine how she looked when she approached him and his children.

That is awful. To be fair, I think people who are such assholes they dispute paying for damage their dogs cause would be equally asshole-ish if they attacked another dog. Some people just dont think they should be held liable for what their pets do. But then again, some people dont think they should make good if they or their children damage anything either, so I guess it shouldnt be too surprising.

I am so sorry, that is so upsetting for you. I do think there are a lot of laws around pets and pet ownership which need to be rewritten - the reclassifying of damage done if a pet is kidnapped is a start.

Not sure how a 5ft woman being very polite is harassing to a 20 stone 6ft police officer who has just let his dog kill her cat. He must be a very weak one. I knew what his job was before I knocked his door. I can assure you I wasn’t harassing, he’s just another example of a corrupt copper using his job title against members of the public. Unfortunately this behaviour isn’t a one off. I suggest you forget the popcorn, I didn’t make it public for my own sake and for the record, I’m still very upset about it, not sure why you feel the need to take the p out of that to be honest. Hope it never happens to you.

JustSawJohnny · 13/07/2025 02:49

Akitas can be incredibly nasty.

I agree that this is a concern because if the dog can jump a fence to attack another dog it can do the same to attack a child.

If I were you, I'd be planting something tall and spiky along the fence/wall so it wouldn't be tempted to come across to your side.

It only takes one poorly tied lead.

kurotora · 13/07/2025 18:19

I’d like to correct about Akitas here. They are not “nasty” or “dicey” dogs - they have an enormously high prey drive, they were bred as hunters. Like most other spitz type dogs they are independent, stubborn and aloof so generally do not seem friendly to new humans, which many people don’t like. I have a small spitz type with a similar temperament and people are wary about a dog that’s not all waggy and friendly - but she just only cares about us, her family, and people we see a lot.

Anyway, Akitas need to be very, very carefully controlled around any small animals. I would love one myself, but as a cat lover I will absolutely never do it.

It’s definitely possible that the Akita killed another animal. But OP, it’s not something you can really report as you don’t know what happened or the circumstances. Regardless, it’s not very likely this makes it a dangerous dog to you as a human, any more than a greyhound that runs down and kills a small animal.
