Am I mean and selfish for feeling like this about attending to my sisters dog

Hi
I live next door to my sister and she frequently asks me to let her dog out whenever she is at work or if she goes out.

The problem is that it is not house trained at all.
When left it poos and wees all over the hall floor.
Alot of the time when I go to let it out I walk in on puddles of wee and poo.
I can honestly say I hate attending to it these days.
Cleaning up the mess makes me heave.
I do not have a dog myself and have no desire for one at all as I would hate to have to clean this sort of mess up.

I honestly don,t see why I should have to sort out someone else's dog in this way.
However I don,t have the heart to tell her I don,t want to be doing this in case I appear really selfish.

Sometimes I wish I had never moved next door
the only reason for that was because I had always liked my sisters style of house and area and a house came up at the right time.

I realise some of you are probably dog lovers on here and would put up with anything but be honest with me if you was me would you feel as I do.

I have 3 dogs but wouldnt clean up after someone elses on a regular basis. I would expect her to make sure it is housetrained.

themoon66 · 29/03/2008 20:31

Does she not have a garden or yard or somewhere you could put it outside for the day?

SlartyBartFast · 29/03/2008 20:31

why should you really clear up the mess?
she won't house train it until she perhaps realises how messy it is?

put newspaper down.
how old is dog

Lulumama · 29/03/2008 20:32

let the dog out but leave the wee and poo for her?

moondog · 29/03/2008 20:33

It's not the dog's fault.
Your sister sounds selfish and irresponsible.

RahRahRachel · 29/03/2008 20:33

If she's only asking you to let the dog out, why are you cleaning up the mess?

lostittoday · 29/03/2008 20:34

Thanks
hercules1

She loves her dog so much she won,t hear any bad about it.

She has been told before now by my mom that really if the dog goes to the toilet like this when left that it should be outside in a kennel.

She doesn,t take kindly to that though she says that you don,t have a dog to shove it outside in a kennel.

I mean what did she do before I moved next door I don,t know.

How old is the dog? It is cruel for her not to have house trained it.

I agree that maybe you should just let the dog out and put newspaper over the mess it's left in the house.

I occasionally look after my parents' very elderly cats when they go away and it is HIDEOUS. They poo and wee so much the tray is always overflowing and stinking and has to be changed completely every day. And there's often hairballs and a random puddle here or there. It is horrible. BUT they don't ask me often and they do me loads of favours so I would never complain to them. If it was a regular thing I would make a stand.

lostittoday · 29/03/2008 20:36

Oh dear I don,t think I could just walk in on wee and poo and leave it.
I would feel awful for doing that.
So what do I do I clean it up.
Maybe I am a mug and should leave it.

no but put newspaper down for the dog to go on if it can't last

lostittoday · 29/03/2008 20:39

The dog is 7 its even wet all over her bed before now.

Newspaper is put down which does help with the pooing, but the wee it just drips everywhere.

You're choosing to clean up after it then

Either clean up after it and don't complain, or just let it out and leave the mess for your sister.

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 20:39

why are you cleaning up after it?

it's her damn dog.

open the door and let it out.

don't even bother going in there.

she's sounds too immature and selfish to have a dog.

if she says you don't have a dog to leave it in a kennel, why not remind her that you don't have a dog to expect others to let it for you because your schedule doesn't allow it.

sorry, but my sister knows better than this. she knew i'd never put up with her ghetto dogs when we lived in teh same town, so didn't ask.

one time she asked me, 'what if i just brought the dogs over to you on my way out?' i told her i'd drop them off at the local animal shelter.

and i would have.

i can't stand dogs.

they're vile.

hercules1 · 29/03/2008 20:40

A 7 year old really shouldnt be doing this unless it really has never been trained and/or for medical reasons. Does it get walks?

CarGirl · 29/03/2008 20:41

why don't you ask her to leave the dog out in the mornings and then you go around to let the dog in after so many hours?

onepieceoflollipop · 29/03/2008 20:41

Sometimes it can be behavioural with a dog, rather than it being "untrainable". The dog is showing it's displeasure at being abandoned by its owner (possibly).

My mother had a particular dog like this. No practical tips sorry. My mum has had a number of difficult dogs actually, on occasion she has called in the doggy psychologist. (apologies I am sure this is not the proper job title but wanted to explain simply)

onepieceoflollipop · 29/03/2008 20:43

Your comment about it wetting on her bed just confirmed my suspicion that this is the dog feeling threatened/anxious/unhappy at being left rather than a physical/housetraining problem.

If your sister had to clean up the whole mess for a few days in a row she would get to see the full extent of the issue. You are inadvertently covering the situation up a big, however well meaning.

I do think that it does it sometimes through been left as an act of spite.

She would never hear of it been left outside at all like that CarGirl.

Another thing is that it flippen well barks like crazy at times and I think it would do this if put outside creating another problem.

tbh my dp as come close to going round and stringing it up through the barking sometimes at midnight when they have been out.

OP posts:
hercules1 · 29/03/2008 20:49

How often does it get walked?

CarGirl · 29/03/2008 20:50

In that case I would conveniently not be able to do it for several days on the trot therefore leaving your sister to clean it up......

I would refuse to do it (but that is me) and get to sort the real problem out.
