I NEED TO REMOVE SPAY STITCHES..ANY VETS ON HERE?

My Exotic Shorthair cat just turned 1 on April 10th. She got fixed and now the stitches need to be removed. They should have been removed a week ago, but she is so traumatized from car rides and this that there is NO WAY I can take her to the vet. It has me traumatized as well. The girl that answers their phone said I could remove them myself. She said I undo the know and remove them like shoelaces?????? I am nervous!!! Is there a legit vet on here that can tell me how to remove them? She does not like to be held or messed with much. I am adding a picture to show the incision and stitches. Thanks!

Are you sure the receptionist gave you correct information?

Can you ask the vet for some medication/sedation that will calm the cat down enough to get her to clinic?

Whu · 15/04/2023 23:16

That wound doesn’t look great?
My cat wounds have never had a bloody scab like that?
I’m sorry your cat was traumatised by travelling but I’d want the wound checking - post op check and suture removal is usually included with any procedure although my vets have used dissolving stitches for years now - especially in a cat where a post op check may be tricky!

BreviloquentBastard · 15/04/2023 23:19

I think you'll get your hand clawed off if you try and do that yourself, it looks sore and won't be pleasant for her.

Can you contact the vet about possible sedation options so you can try to get her in to be seen?

BellaBlossoms · 15/04/2023 23:23

I think you need to bite the bullet and take the cat back to the vet tbh. Those stitches have been in over a week too long and the photo isn’t clear but the skin may have started to heal around them? The vet will be able to prescribe something you can collect and give her to calm her before you travel to your appointment.

FlatFaceMama · 16/04/2023 03:21

Yes. She said to untie knot and they come out like laces. SHE IS SO SCARED IN CAR SHE STARTS HAVING SEIZURES OR SOMETHING!

Perhaps a mobile vet might come out to your house - ask on a local FB group perhaps.

FlatFaceMama · 16/04/2023 03:26

The stitches look like they pulled her skin or something. Would it hurt for me to clip them where I can and try? Also can I put oinment of some kind on it to help? I have been through so much with her in only a year that I worry so much. That same vet acted like I was crazy for taking her to them multipleeee tiems about her eyes and the owner said STOP WORRYING SHE IS JUST A DAMN CAT her eyes are fine deal with it!!!!!! Well the day they spayed her I told them check her left eye and other too again mainly left....THEY SAID SHE HAD 50 PRESSURE AND HAS GLAUCOMA!!!!!!!!! I cried for a straight week! So NO I was not crazy and it could have been caught months ago!!!!

Get the Vet to do a home visit. Your cat wasn’t ‘fixed’, she wasn’t broken 🙄

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 16/04/2023 06:21

If your cat has glaucoma and cannot travel to the vet, you have much bigger problems than a few spay stitches.

Call your vet and ask for a nurse to do a home visit and get some behavioural advice around helping her to become more comfortable with travel.

I'm presuming you're not in the UK

BritInAus · 16/04/2023 06:37

I'm struggling to see how a car ride is more traumatising than someone with no veterinary experience removing stitches at home!?

I don't think cats have seizures in the car. They might make a lot of noise and fuss. That isn't a seizure.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 16/04/2023 06:48

This is one of the most nuts things I think I've ever read on here . How does the pet get It's vaccinations ? Regular check ups . I would never contemplate removing my pets stitches at home myself ! I would want to know the would was healing safely !

It’s not an unusual term for neutering or spaying.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 16/04/2023 07:04

There are mobile vets who come to you. I’d look for one near you.

theheights · 16/04/2023 07:04

OP, I'm not a vet but that looks a bit sore and I don't think you should attempt it at home. I think you're just going to have to bite the bullet and take her in. Cats know how to make the most astonishing blood-curdling racket when they want to, but just keep talking calmly to her (that might help you to keep calm too). And yes, the vet can probs give you something to give to the cat in advance so that she's nice and mellow.

Far better to let a professional do this than end up botching it at home.

It's a common term used for the procedure, calm down!

andhmk · 16/04/2023 07:06

Get the vet to do a home visit OP. It will cost but be worth it.

blahblahblah1654 · 16/04/2023 07:09

Please don't attempt it yourself. You could do a lot more harm than good!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/04/2023 08:13

Don't do it yourself. Exotic short haired are usually very chilled and laid back. So I find it a bit odd that she doesn't travel well. Mine is very vocal about going anywhere. But she's all mouth. If she's got Glaucoma, you are Judy going to have to get her used to travel.

WoodenFloorboards · 16/04/2023 08:20

The vet can probably prescribe sedative pills if she's really that bad in the car. Maybe some for you too.

redbigbananafeet · 16/04/2023 08:28

I think I'd be looking for a new vet!

PriamFarrl · 16/04/2023 08:33

Is there a different vet you can use? It won’t solve the cat journey problem but this one doesn’t seem helpful or caring.

saltwater1985 · 16/04/2023 08:40

Don't try and do this yourself, you'll end up causing more damage.

Why have you left it a a week? Burrito the cat (google it) and stuff her in a carrier. She will be ok.
Or as PP have said, ring round and pay extra for a vet to come to you.

Polkadotties · 16/04/2023 08:42

She won’t die from having a car ride. Take her to the vets
