I NEED TO REMOVE SPAY STITCHES..ANY VETS ON HERE?

My Exotic Shorthair cat just turned 1 on April 10th. She got fixed and now the stitches need to be removed. They should have been removed a week ago, but she is so traumatized from car rides and this that there is NO WAY I can take her to the vet. It has me traumatized as well. The girl that answers their phone said I could remove them myself. She said I undo the know and remove them like shoelaces?????? I am nervous!!! Is there a legit vet on here that can tell me how to remove them? She does not like to be held or messed with much. I am adding a picture to show the incision and stitches. Thanks!

Take her to the vets. You could give her an infection trying to do it yourself. That's if she doesn't already have one!

Shes not having a seizure. She's just nervous. The more you travel with her the more she will get used to it.

To be fair to the vet maybe the OP said they didn't want to come back so the only option is to say well you could try and remove them yourself. We don't know the conversation they had before the screenshot.

OP we have had non disposable stitches in our dog and I wouldn't have wanted to remove them myself.

You need to get a home visit or go back to the vets however unpleasant it is (I say that as someone whose dog has been traumatised by the number of vet visits we have had to do).

Jesus christ, just put her in a carrier and have done with it. Honestly, this is pathetic. I've had cats all my life, none of them like going to the vets, it is an absolute drama but it's your responsibility to get them there! This actually angers me, what are you gonna do, never take her to the vets again?? Whst about when she's sick? Or elderly and needs teeth removing? Get her to the vet for a bloody check on that wound and them stitches safely removed!!!!

I know several ex vet nurses who are now dog walkers and/or trainers. A post on your local Facebook page asking for someone qualified to visit might get some results. Especially if you add a picture so they can see whether it's a job they could do.

Pay for a home visit.

Lougle · 16/04/2023 09:19

You don't want to untie it and pull because the bacteria from the exposed stitch will pull through the inside of the wound. I was a (human) nurse and we would always cut the stitch close to the skin on one side of the knot, then pull so that only the thread that was already inside the wound was pulled through it.

I do think you need to either take the cat to the vet and put up with her distress, or get someone out to you.

She needs to go to the vets. It needs checking that there is no infection

It's a common term used for the procedure, calm down!

Oh the old ‘calm down’ trope 🙄

blahblahblah1654 · 16/04/2023 10:57

Cats hate the vets. Just get a grip and take her there.

caringcarer · 16/04/2023 11:26

Don't try to cut those stitches yourself. Your can will scratch you to death. Put her in a carrier and just take to the vet. It looks worse as skin has started to heal as stitches have been in too long. No cat died from being put in a cat carrier.

SoupDragon · 16/04/2023 11:31

First, breathe! Take a deep breath.

You need to take her to the vet. There will be many, many more occasions in her life when you will need to take her to the vet so she needs to get used to it and you need to find a way to do it as calmly as possible.

Have you tried stuff like Feliway?

WildCherryBlossom · 16/04/2023 15:56

Our vet requires us to visit 3 days post op to check on stitches, ensure no infection and find out general well-being of the cat. I'm surprised you would be discharged with just an email. Consider looking for a new vet, closer to home. Consider Feliway for your cat's anxiety too.

Oh the old ‘calm down’ trope 🙄

I do believe that you started it 😊

PollyPeptide · 16/04/2023 16:03

I've removed pet stitches. But I've never untied them. I cut them and then pull them through. Make sure you ask how many they put in, so you know you've got them all out.

Is that a hole, though? I've never had that.

This response makes no sense whatsoever.

Oh no worries, here you go:

A. You rolled your eyes and were sarcastic at the OP’s use of a common term for spay / neuter.

B. Posters pointed this out.

C. You didn’t like being corrected and got stroppy.

D. I pointed out that you started the issue.

None of which was helpful to the OP. So I’ll leave it there.

Shhhquirrel · 16/04/2023 23:21

Oh I’m quite confident you won’t be able to ‘leave it there’ as you obviously have to have the last word, 3…2…1….here comes@Toothed 😂
