We bought 2 femaleguineas in early november ,they were approx 11 weeks old and from the same litter.

The vet sexed them as well and said that they appeared to be female but sometimes it is difficult to tell when they are immature.

They have co-habited nicely together with the occasional squabble /domestic.
'Pippa'has always had the 'lair' to herself whilst 'Peppa' has sucumbed to the tube.
'Pippa' has always been 1st to have refusal on the food although 'Peppa 'is more vocal.

Tonight we got them out as usual in the kitchen to clean them out and 'Peppa' kept mounting 'Pippa'

my female rabbits did that alot, or rather the dominant one tried to mount the more docile one, so it's probably just them maturing.

turn the over and look for bits

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 20:08

I really hope you are right Southeastastra.

I have tried to look for ' bits' but they wriggle a lot and i don't want to push my luck with them.

oh my 2 males used to do that, quite normal i think!
ds's thought it was quite hilarious that bubby the guinea pig was gay!!

Fennel · 14/02/2008 20:10

We got one female guinea pig last year and she had babies . Only two babies though and they were so cute we kept the girl one and we have just borrowed a male to produce some more.
If you do have babies you could keep one parent and same sex baby and give the others away.

It's quite easy to tell with guinea pigs. If you compare the two it will be obvious if one is a boy.

My two girl gerbils had babies too, when I was a child. 26 of them.

southeastastra · 14/02/2008 20:11

it's their way of establishing dominance, though i had to separate my rabbits. one was a little more excitable than the other .

both sisters too

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 20:19

Thanks

I shall brave the genitals again later.

you have to be firm with them

beautifulgirls · 14/02/2008 21:41

male guinea pigs are usually pretty well endowed at this age. Shouldn't be too hard to tell. Fingers crossed!

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 21:42

Would it be poking out so to speak?

sandcastles · 14/02/2008 22:19

Our male pigs did this to each other all the time.

One way to tell is that if mounter is male & does his,....er...job...your other little piggy have a sticky substance around her bits.

sandcastles · 14/02/2008 22:20

Actually, it is more waxy, than sticky. Apparantly is is designed to keep the sperm where it is supposed [or not to be.

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 22:21

Just looked at the 'bits'

Peppa has a little whitish part inside
Pippa does not

shit

misdee · 14/02/2008 22:22

and errr hope nothing has suceeded so far?

are you near me? if you are theni would love a baby guinea pig.

misdee · 14/02/2008 22:23

anything like this?

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 22:24

wish i was near you

My mom is bringing an old fish tank up to separate them

CoffeeCrazedMama · 14/02/2008 22:25

When you say Peppa is more vocal - that sounds like a male guinea pig to me. From what I've observed, the boys do tend to be more noisy and outgoing than the girls (in guinea pig world that is). good luck!

fishie · 14/02/2008 22:26

i diagnose the patter of little pig feet for pfnm

they are super, born fully haired and ready to go.

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 22:32

omg that link is confusing

If peppa is male then he isn't very well endowed and no sign of nads either

OP posts:
fishie · 14/02/2008 22:34

pfnm you have found them not to be the same. whether or not they match the book doesn't matter.

kid · 14/02/2008 22:35

I have 2 male guinea pigs and they aren't as developed as those photos. Mine are 5 months old now, so perhaps they don't fully develop until much older?

Baby guinea pigs are gorgeous. I was convinced I had a male and female as one kept trying to mount the other. Still don't have babies though so I assume they are just confused males!

CarGirl · 14/02/2008 22:36

if you stroke the males tummy then his willy will pop out.

Baby guinea pigs are just the sweetest thing ever!

I would get the pet shop to supply you with a young female to replace the male as they do get lonely on their own.

Beauregard · 14/02/2008 22:41

Dont want to mess too much as they are getting fed up

dd1 is going to be heartbroken.

Remotew · 14/02/2008 22:46

We had two boys who had a baby . I got them sexed and kept the female and her female baby. Then lo and behold another litter of 6. Guess I didnt separate them quick enough. After that I got the pet shop to take them all away as I was on the verge of a breakdown
