Does anyone have a kitten/cat who does NOT sleep on their bed? Also question about LEATHER sofas.

And how likely is it that a 5 month cat we're getting wont sleep on ours?
He has a bed (that hooks on to a radiator ) that he loves. Its coming with him. He sleeps in that in the day but at night he sleeps with his mum, upstairs. When he's here he wont be able to sleep with her.

Also will he scratch our leather sofas?? He doesn't scratch the leather ones where he lives now btw. Just wondered if these will be 'new' attractive sofas for him to scratch.

Oh and lastly how much do flu jabs cost??

TIA

We have a cat that doesn't sleep on our bed. But that's because the other cat, that she doesn't like, doe sleep on the bed. And if he were to be shut from the bedroom would scratch and miaow outside the door until he could come in.

Our don't scratch furniture. Some do though. Not sure how you can tell.

Hecate · 28/01/2008 07:44

If you don't want him to sleep on your bed, you'll have to keep the door closed.

Cats do exactly what they want to do. You can prevent their access to your bed, but they'll just think "screw you" and do it anyway, if they want to and they get a chance.

Re the sofa. We have leather ones and they are shredded. Get a scratching post. A fun one with toys on and put catnip on the bugger!

And get a water pistol. And shoot the bugger every time he sprags on your sofa!

Remember though, that he'll be lonely. He's going to need a lot of tlc, familiar smells, etc.

We have 2 x 7 month old cats. We have a room for them to sleep in at night, so they don't disturb us. He will miss his Mum though. I would get advice about getting 2. Mine like company.

We also have a leather sofa, and they do occasionally scratch, it but we have taught them not to. Best to get a scratch post.

Not sure about the flu jab.

Our cat doesn't sleep on our bed, will snuggle up in a draw of clothes though if left open. Also we have leather sofa's that she has never scracthed, but we have a scratching post for her so she has no need to really.

Dh tried to shut our cat (first he'd ever had) out of our bedroom. He gave in after only one night of cat scratching at the door and yowling. All night.

Cats like to cuddle up and be cosy. They like warm bodies. Just get some sticky rollers and go over the duvet every morning!

Scratching post good idea but some cats won't go near them. Second cat nip idea though - it's the ONLY chance you have of attracting cat to post. If he does scratch the sofa, try rubbing lemon soap on it - apparently they don't like the smell or getting in under their nails.

Agree poor pussy will need lots of reassurance, moving house very stressful for them without added burden of losing her owner. Keep her in for the first few days so she gets used to her new territory and doesn't try to find her way back to her old house.

edam · 28/01/2008 08:02

apols for gender confusion!

LazyLinePainterJane · 28/01/2008 08:10

As a plus side to moving house, at our old house, our cats used to go missing for days, exploring and whatnot. Once we moved this stopped, as I think that they are worried we might move when they are out or something . It can completely change their personalities though.

princessmel · 28/01/2008 08:16

Thanks everyone He has a post he likes at the house he's at now. I'll get the same sort if possible.
I am a bit, no quite a lot worried about the sofas tbh. His current owner has told me about spraying him when he does something I don't want him to do.
I'll see about the not-on-bed thing. I'm really not keen on him sleeping there. We'll see how he gets on though. I don't mind up on the landing .

Our kitten has to sleep on her own,in a blanket lined box, locked in the kitchen as she tends to pee...on my bed, ds's bed, school bags, throws. I'm hoping she'll grow out of it but I'm not prepared to give her the chance until the weather is good enough to dry duvets on the washing line!!!!

Cremolafoam · 28/01/2008 09:08

just watch out or this might happen

lou33 · 28/01/2008 09:14

generally mine doesnt, because i get fed up being woken by the bell on his collar, when he is cleaning where his balls once were

how ever he slept wrapped around ds2 last night, which i thought was rather sweet, tho ds2 had ended up in my bed, but he wasnt fiddling about in his nether regions, so no bell tinkling

Vacua · 28/01/2008 09:16

my 3 cats sleep in various places, usually on a child's head - they sometimes venture onto my bed but then the dog will come in and howl at them

none of them have ever scratched our leather furniture

chocolateteapot · 28/01/2008 09:22

We've got 3 cats and they are shut in the kitchen at night. There's a sofa in there for them to sleep on if they want to but I think they usually go for things like the clothes in the washing basket and the table though. We're hopefully building an extension which will give us a utility room downstairs, they will then sleep in there.

Have tried just shutting the bedroom doors but the scratching and mieowing got a bit much, so this is working much better. All of them have done so from being kittens but two of them are from the same litter so had each other. The other one had our other cat who we had when she was little but I don't think he was around much.

Our leather sofa is pretty knackered but it is about 9 years old and the children have done more damage than the cats I think.

Current scratching posts for our cats are the wicker log basket in the living room and a wooden door to a cupboard in the kitchen.

I think the injections came to £47 for both sets. Neutering was about £40 ish and microchip about £20.

MorocconOil · 28/01/2008 09:31

We have 2 kittens (6 months) who sleep together in a basket. They start the night in the DSs beds, but return to their baskets later on.

They haven't scratched the leather sofa, but have a go at our fabric furniture and are forever climbing the curtains.

I think they are less destructive if they have company. Also ours are outside quite alot now and run around playing, so tend to come inside to go to sleep.

phraedd · 28/01/2008 16:16

we have a cat and a 5 month old kitten

neither sleep in our bedroom.

One of our leathervsofas has been scratched but the other hasn't (2 didn't types in 2 different rooms). I guess it depends on how soft the leather is.

tigana · 28/01/2008 16:21

A cat won't sleep on your bed if you keep your bedroom closed all the time. They may however scratch up the hallway carpet in the corner by your bedroom door in their efforts to gain access.

princessmel · 28/01/2008 19:55

Well he's here, sitting on my lap and purring REALLY loudly.
He's wee'd in the litter tray. No poo yet. He ate all his dinner too. Been very excited playing with the kids. Explored everywhere. Including upstairs. Didn't go in my bedroom dd bedroom. Went in ds's though.

We'll see.

Not been in his bed yet. Or scratched the sofa or his new post. Has scratched the front door mat though. Thats fine.

My kitten came home with me at 5 weeks and slept on my pillow. Everyone told me not to let her on the bed so I would put her on the floor and she would get back on. This carried on until I fell asleep and she stayed on my pillow all night.

She then moved down the bed and slept on my bed for the next few years until we found out DS1 was on the way and she was given her own bed.

nortynamechanger · 28/01/2008 20:00

There are several vaccinations that your cat will need, not just 'flu. listed here

Also wormers and proper flea (vets) treatments and all responisible owners (imho) should have their cats neutered

princessmel · 28/01/2008 20:04

Thanks He's had his 'bits chopped off', thats what his owner said. Does that mean neutered?? (sorry if its a silly question)

I LOVE that cartoon cremola.

princessmel · 28/01/2008 20:05

He keeps nodding off

nortynamechanger · 28/01/2008 22:52

Yes pm, 'bits chopped off' is the same!

Often it doesn't happen until kittens are 6 months, which is why I wrote that, although they can breed from 4 mths!

Candlewax · 28/01/2008 22:57

Our cat was taught that upstairs is NOT for her, Cats are intelligent, they will learn.

Joash · 28/01/2008 22:58

Our cat is 14 years old and has neverslept on any of the beds. Be careful of animals and leather though - the oils in cats and dogs coats can damage leather.
