What's the best footwear for walking the dog??

Obviously wellies are a good option as they ae easy to clean and waterproof but they aren't very comfy for long walks.

Walking boots would be comfy but even if they are waterproof would still get covered in mud across fields.

Really not sure what to get.
What do you other dog owners wear???

hunter wellies are comfortable for long walks

I promise

AnAngelWithin · 15/01/2008 11:25

i have got a pair of flat hush puppies boots that are soooooo comfy! ive had them for 3 years now and they are just starting to let the wet a bit but i will be replacing them with another pair the same.

LittleB · 15/01/2008 12:06

Depends on the weather, I work as a Countryside Ranger so do alot of walking at work too. Hunter wellies are great, but expensive, but I walk miles in them, I then wear sturdy walking boots when it isn't as wet as they are comfier, but you'll get muddy trousers too! I wear trnier type walking boots in the summer! dd wears wellies or trainers!

NappiesGalore · 15/01/2008 12:11

ooh, mumbomama, thats a v good question. i dont actually have a dog (but am campaigning so fingers crossed ) but live in the country and am wanting to Take Up Walking/hiking/trekking and want a good comfy sturdy waterproof boot or two to get me underway.

so anyone knowing of such a thing would be most welcome to tell me! (and mumbomama of course, since its her thread, like)

MamaG · 15/01/2008 12:11

I agree with vac

NappiesGalore · 15/01/2008 13:11

i have hunter wellies. and they are indeed fine for medium length walks. but feet inevitably get a bit funny feeling in the end inside any welly, non?

MuffinMclay · 15/01/2008 13:55

Another vote for Hunter wellies.

mistlethrush · 15/01/2008 13:58

I have non-hunter wellies - still not cheap, but comfortable (tried on several different types in somewhere that stocks wellies costing £10 - £150 - didn't go near the top of the range!). I use walking shoes if its not muddy, and in the summer I use Teva sandals - quite often if its raining in the summer still stick to the sandals.

flowerybeanbag · 15/01/2008 13:59

My mum has these for walking the dog. They are so comfortable, only in mens but they go down to a US 8 which is UK 7 size. I am a 6 and my mum's fit me with cosy socks. She is getting me some for my birthday!

rosybud · 15/01/2008 14:00

I have some wellies called Muck Boots which are very comfy and warm, I find them better to walk in than normal wellies. Not cheap though approx £40 iirc.

flowerybeanbag · 15/01/2008 14:00

That's a lie, they do come in women's, my mum clearly doesn't have a clue... here

jo25 · 15/01/2008 14:05

I have 3/4 lenght fur lined "Muckers" they are great and my ds 5 also has the ankle lenght ones, they do mud, ice, snow and water without fail. When trhey get really mucky i was them in the sink. They are made by Harry Hall.

WriggleJiggle · 15/01/2008 14:09

usually walking boots in the winter, trainers or sandals in the summer (depending if it will be prickly underfoot). Actually, yesterday I wore my cricket trainers, and because they had spikes they were fab. I'm considering permanently demoting them to 'dog walk' position.

NappiesGalore · 15/01/2008 17:42

i spose these look pretty good for dog walking - says 'cushioned sole for all day comfort'

the bench made range look like the business but how much??

peanutbear · 15/01/2008 17:44

I have comfy wellies for very wet weather and good walking boots for all other climates

I prefer my walking boots but they do get muddy bangs off when dry though

Vacua · 15/01/2008 17:52

you really don't have to spend a fortune, mine were about £65 or so, aubergine, and look nice with my red coat

there are not enough pairings of red and aubergine in the dog walking world

NappiesGalore · 15/01/2008 17:55

lol at colour pairing lament.

the ones i linked to were only 36 quid. pretty darn cheap for hunters, no? and extra cusioned sole, donchknow.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 15/01/2008 17:58

I sometimes have my Hunter wellies on for the whole day and have never found them uncomfortable. They're not slippy or prone to cracking or leaking either. I'd say worth the money. (And the really long thick Hunter socks inside them are duvets-for-feet when it's freezing cold).

And Jo25s is right about Muckers too as long as you don't encounter very thick, deep mud.

Vacua · 15/01/2008 18:01

yes was going to say about the hunter socks

I walk LOADS of dogs some days, it's how I keep fit(ish)/top up my income and I haven't got trench foot or blisters or anything

in fact was thinking only the other day how much I love my winter feet and how rubbish they are in the summer when breaking in all sorts of new wedges and sandals

I LOVE wellies

Alambil · 16/01/2008 00:39

Go to any camping/outdoors shop - they should be able to advise on comfort and stuff on particular boots.

My mum has some proper hiking boots (cost nearly £100) but then she is a dog trainer and works all day on her feet/on the field (up to 8 hours) so needs proper support/comfort!

justwaterformethanks · 16/01/2008 08:35

hunter wellies are great as long as you dont have footballer calves ! I wear walking boots and if the weather is horrendous ,sexy waterproof trousers ,you could get gators as well which cover the bottem of your legs

Vacua · 16/01/2008 09:53

I think you can get them in special sizes for the more generously proportioned calf, and there are slimmer ones too - but they are all adjustable, well all mine are. But all mine are normal ones. Not that I have a compulsive hunter welly buying disorder or anything, but the olive green is nice, the aubergine is best and that more traditional green is an important staple in any wardrobe.

Fanargadeb · 18/01/2008 18:38

i ve walked my mums dog in stileto heels!!!! but i wouldnt recomend it!!!

bubblerock · 18/01/2008 18:58

You Need a pair of These - actually I was really tempted for walking the dog especially if it snows - and at that price you could get a couple of pairs! I guess you would also be seen in the dark lol

Smurfs · 18/01/2008 19:01

Hunters without a doubt! 3 miles a day and I love them....think I will be buried in them!
