What's the best footwear for walking the dog??

Obviously wellies are a good option as they ae easy to clean and waterproof but they aren't very comfy for long walks.

Walking boots would be comfy but even if they are waterproof would still get covered in mud across fields.

Really not sure what to get.
What do you other dog owners wear???

Huntress wellies are good for chunky calves.

Gingerbear · 18/01/2008 19:14

lol at tag line on Aigle wellies:

'A dependable well designed wellington that will give you piece of mind.'

Oh, the frantic hours spent sleeplessly tossing and turning over wether ones wellies are dependable or not.

handlemecarefully · 18/01/2008 19:16

Wellies. Not found them uncomfortable

Vacua · 18/01/2008 19:19

I have had the misfortune of a very determined bramble poking through a hunter welly before - dem Aigle ones look WELL sturdy innit. thanks

Vacua · 18/01/2008 19:20

very misleading pic of the aubergine hunters, they are much darker and more auberginish in real life

Gingerbear · 18/01/2008 19:28

See Vacua, you need ' A dependable well designed wellington that will give you piece of mind.'

Pesky brambles....

Vacua · 18/01/2008 19:30

I've just bought Hunters, very pleased with how comfy they are. Warmer than my old pair as well (very annoyed cos they weren't cheap but split at the ankle)

What's the best way to look after Hunters to keep them in tip top condition?

Will look for the socks/duvets to go in them, thanks.

I have my Timberland hiking boots for most walks. If it is particularly muddy, I have my gardening wellies, which are fairly comfy.

BigGitDad · 20/01/2008 09:12

Hunters for the winter and probably a pair of timberland or waterproof summer walking boots for the summer. You would not want to wear wellies all year round

Wags · 20/01/2008 09:24

What sort of budget are you looking at? I have these and they are wonderful. Had them over 5 years and they have no splits or anything on them. Use them for dog walking. I find hunters too 'hard' and unforgiving. Also over time they seem to split but to be honest when I used hunters the most I had horses as well so they were getting more use. I would also rate the Aigle above hunter as well. Again, a more soft, comfy feel to them.

Wags · 20/01/2008 09:25

Just to add I don't wear them all year round. When weather improves I use a walking boot/shoe type.

Wags · 20/01/2008 09:26

Gingerbear.........get them they will last for ever and be worth it. Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on

MrsSpoon · 20/01/2008 21:48

I bought a pair of Uggs for dog walking, ordered all the way from Oz when the weather here was dry and icy, once they finally arrived the weather turned to wet and muddy, now waiting on my Hunter wellies arriving from e-Bay.

MrsSpoon · 25/01/2008 21:59

My Hunter wellies arrived yesterday they are surprisingly comfy and only cost £30 (inc delivery), they are apparently seconds, scuffs on the rubber etc.
