Do you keep your cat in at night?

Just curious how many keep their cats locked in at night and how many roam free?

I keep all three of mine in at night

Judgedbycats · 25/04/2022 10:50

My boy is inside every night.

helpfulperson · 25/04/2022 10:52

I put the cat flap to in only at around 9pm. This means once they are in they can't go back out. One of mine sometimes stays out until midnight but not often later.

peridito · 25/04/2022 10:53

Yes we keep ours in at night .Even though that's the time he most wants to be out .I hope ,rather vainly, that this avoids optimum hunting time .

LidlMissSunshine · 25/04/2022 10:54

Yes. They both spoon with us on our bed and take up all the space.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 25/04/2022 10:57

My current lad is an indoor cat (no hate please - he has a medical condition) but all my previous cats have been indoors at night. Safety reasons more than hunting reasons tbh.

ZenKaleidoscope · 25/04/2022 10:58

We have a cat flap. She comes and goes when she pleases.

TweetTweetMF · 25/04/2022 11:04

Mine are kept in at night. No matter what weather.

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/04/2022 11:06

All mine stay in at night.

OnlySoAnHour · 25/04/2022 11:07

yes. Plus he’s only allowed outside in the day when he’s in the yard on his lead.

Foxfeeder · 25/04/2022 11:08

Mine are kept in at night. The cat flap has a curfew mode. They know when it closes and often pop out just before curfew after snoozing inside for hours. I assume it’s the equivalent of going for a last wee before bedtime 😊

SisyphusDad · 25/04/2022 11:08

Mine are free to come and go as they like.

Smartiepants79 · 25/04/2022 11:08

Mine does at the moment but she’s still quite young. The 3 overnight poos on the carpet next to the litter tray are currently making me question this decision 😡.
My previous cat often stayed out all night.

SunshineAndFizz · 25/04/2022 11:09

Let mine out at night, cat flap is always open.

Why do people keep them in, what's the difference to daytime?

YesItsMeIDontCare · 25/04/2022 11:10

Likewise 😁
Leroy has 2 walks a day but we do venture further than the back garden.

Try and extra large tray. When mine did this he was standing in the tray but it bum was hanging over the edge.

Our cat is free to roam. He is an old boy now so I doubt he goes far but he was 6 when we got him and he was used to roaming.

Fizbosshoes · 25/04/2022 11:11

Mine do what they want, in the winter they spend most of the time indoors, in the summer they go out.
The only time we restrict them going out is around fireworks night and new year.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 25/04/2022 11:13

Safety mostly for me. Less likely to get hit by a car or attacked.

Pedrosfluffybum · 25/04/2022 11:15

The cat flap goes on 'in only' at about 10pm. She has the kitchen to herself at night, sometimes I hear her come in before I fall asleep, sometimes I don't.

Her favourite time to go out is just as the sun is going down, which is obviously getting later and later. I can see her staying out all night come the warm summer nights. She's 16 months old, so was just a kitten last summer.

In many ways I'm happier with her going out at night - less traffic, less dogs in gardens.... She doesn't go far, she likes to hunt mice in next door's garden 😊

MrOllivander · 25/04/2022 11:16

No cat flap so in at night
He's black so I would keep him in anyway and I don't want him mooching about in the dark with people about/traffic when I can't see him

BBQbeef · 25/04/2022 11:16

For those that let their cats roam at night, would that change if you knew your cat was causing a problem for one of your neighbours in the night?

The road at the front of our house is quiet but the road on the other side of our back garden fence is bad for people speeding down it late at night.

Also, we have loads of foxes round here and I'm worried about them getting attacked - especially now there are cubs around.

But - and I know I may be kidding myself because they're cats and therefore sociopaths - I genuinely believe that they like coming to bed with us. They wait on the landing while we do our teeth and then we all jump into bed together and I fall asleep to the sound of them purring.

It depends. What sort of problems are we talking about?

cockapoopoo · 25/04/2022 11:19

My cats sleep at night as we do and so they are in.

No one who loves their cats would want their cat to be a nuisance. People can harm cats they find a nuisance and there's no way to know who is capable of this and who isn't.

If you find a cat a nuisance you should let the owner know. If they don't care or care about the cat, the cat should be rehomed.
