hi,i have a 15 yr old female house cat,at 4.30am she started with vomiting and diahrea(sp) it was absolutly everwhere, this lasted for about half an hour and she has been flat out on the bed since. her breathing is noisy and rapid she wont eat but had a little water off my finger and her back end is covered in faeces which i have tried to clean but dont want to stress her out.i rang the emergency vet at lunchtime explaining all this but seemed reluctant to see her as it would be £85 call out + treatment and said to keep her queit and take her tommorrow and then warned me it didnt sound good.now i know she is very sick and my gut instinct is that she may not pull through and will probably be put to sleep so would you ring the vet back and insist on being seen or wait till tommorrow ,she doesnt seem to be in pain but i am worried she may get worse through the night.sorry for the ramble but im really stressed about her.

My advice is to keep her comfy, make sure she eats something and drinks something. If nothing is worse then take her in the morning. If it gets worse ring the vet and demand he comes.

Hi k9 - so sorry to hear about your kitty. If she is 15 that is not very old for a cat. Is there any chance she could have eaten something that might have been poisened? Like amouse or rat? If so you need to call the vet out.

She may just have a bug - cats lie very still when poorly to conserve their energy and help themselves to heal. You must keep her hydrated though - so use a syringe to pop water into her mouth. They are very resiliant creatures.

We had a stray that used to visit us and once he came in coovered in mud with blood on his face and his teeth missing. I managed to clean him up as best I could and he lay on a cushion in the corner. His breathing was really laboured and he was panting and I felt sure he would be dead by the morning. He recovered the though and was fine a few days later.

Hope all is well - let me know how you get on. If you ahve any Bach Resuce Remedy in the house you could pop a bit onto your finger and rub it into her gums - that will help her emotions/calm her down a bit.

k9 sorry about your cat. Assuming the worst, and that your cat isn't in pain, wouldn't you keep her in her own home, with you, in the warm overnight, say your good byes, and take her in (in a non blue light way)tomorrow for the vet to help her on her way? After all, what treatment is the vet likely to give now?
Be as calm as you can for the cat's sake, keep her warm, quiet & comfortable as the vet said, and do your best for her in her normal environment.

He HAS to see you or refer you to another vet under his code of conduct (are curently arguing this with my vet atm after my cat died when emergency vet was 'too busy'- Sister and some toehrs on MN showed me code on their website)

As long as you can afford it, get her to the vets now- still sad after losing our kitty and knowing that a bit mroe force might haev saved the mite

A cat that allows itself to become covered in faeces is a dreadfully ill one

hi k9, sorry to hear about your cat.
im a vet nurse so hope i can help. try to pinch the skin up on the top of her head - it should flip right back when you let go.
her gums should me slippy, not dry and tacky. if her skin stays up and her gums are tacky she is dehydrated - could probably do with being put on a drip.

you could also check her temperature - with a normal thermomerer (up her bum - but if she really is on deaths door she wont care!) it should be at least 38C.

if you really cant get to the vet till tomorrow - keep her warm and dry. try to clean her bum unless she is getting really stressed. offer her some water, or just wet her gums and tongue every now and again if she wont drink. i would lay off the food if she has been sick.

keep positive - she may have just scavenged something her gut couldnt cope with. but 15 is not a bad age if she has been healthy up till now.

will be thinkin of you
AX
